A bed component, for example a mattress or a mattress base, includes a vacuum pump and at least one actuator which is adaptable in its height and/or firmness and has a maximum height in the non-actuated state, wherein the vacuum pump is fluidly connected to the actuator and a vacuum is formed in the actuator by the vacuum pump in the actuated state of the actuator and the height and/or firmness of the actuator is reduced, wherein the vacuum pump is provided in an area of the bed component external to the actuator. The invention relates to a device for supporting a body or part of a body, in particular a human body, said device comprising a support element (2) including a seat (3) and a peripheral sidewall (4), such as to define a housing (5) having a bottom (6) and a peripheral side face (7), and a pneumatic element (9) comprising a base (10) and inflatable cells (11) fitted inside the housing (5) and extending between the bottom (6) of the housing and the base (10) of the pneumatic element (9). According to the invention, the peripheral sidewall (4) comprises at least one inner retaining bead (8) at a distance from the bottom (6) of the housing (5), and, when inflated, at least some of the inflatable cells (11a) adjacent to the retaining bead (8a) can be engaged laterally between the retaining bead (8) and the bottom (6) of the housing (5).

According to the invention, the peripheral sidewall (4) comprises at least one inner retaining bead (8) at a distance from the bottom (6) of the housing (5), and, when inflated, at least some of the inflatable cells (11a) adjacent to the retaining bead (8a) can be engaged laterally between the retaining bead (8) and the bottom (6) of the housing (5).

Mattress assemblies are provided that include a mattress, a mattress overlay, and a mattress cover that is comprised of a first cover and a second cover. The first cover includes a top panel, a bottom panel, and a continuous side panel that collectively define a cavity and enclose the mattress. The mattress overlay is positioned atop the mattress and the first mattress cover. The second cover, which defines a perimeter, is positioned over and is dimensionally-sized to cover the mattress overlay and at least the top panel of the first cover. The second cover can then be connected to the first cover by a fastener that extends along the perimeter of the second cover.

The present invention relates to a mattress system in which a ultra low pressure plenum is positioned within the mattress system. In one embodiment, the ultra low pressure plenum is a bladder which is sandwiched between layers of a foam material. A plurality of ultra low pressure plenums formed as columns extending longitudinally or laterally along the length of the mattress system can be used.
