CARBON WORKING ELECTRODE FOR A CONTINUOUS BIOLOGICAL SENSOR
20190310222 · 2019-10-10 · ·

Briefly, a carbon working electrode is described that has a plastic substrate of polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, or polylactic acid, and may be formed into an elongated wire. The carbon material coats the plastic substrate, and may be, for example, graphene, diamagnetic graphite, pyrolytic graphite, pyrolytic carbon, carbon black, carbon paste, or carbon ink, which is aqueously dispersed in an elastomeric material such as polyurethane, silicone, acrylates or acrylics. Optionally, selected additives may be added to the carbon compound prior to it being layered onto the plastic substrate. These additives may, for example, improve electrical conductivity or sensitivity, or act as a catalyst for target analyte molecules.

Construction of a Lactobacillus Casei Ethanologen
20190249202 · 2019-08-15 ·

An engineered bacterium for producing ethanol from one or more carbohydrates is disclosed. The bacterium can be made by (a) inactivating within a Lactobacillus casei bacterium one or more endogenous genes encoding a lactate dehydrogenase; or (b) introducing into a Lactobacillus casei bacterium one or more exogenous genes encoding a pyruvate decarboxylase and one or more exogenous genes encoding an alcohol dehydrogenase II; or (c) performing both steps (a) and (b). The resulting engineered bacterium produces significantly more ethanol than the wild-type Lactobacillus casei bacterium, and can be used in producing ethanol from a substrate such as biomass that includes carbohydrates.

Therapeutic inhibition of lactate dehydrogenase and agents therefor

This invention relates to compounds, compositions, and methods useful for reducing lactate dehydrogenase target RNA and protein levels via use of dsRNAs, e.g., Dicer substrate siRNA (DsiRNA) agents.

Process for making acrylic acid from dextrose

A process is described for making acrylic acid from dextrose, which comprises fermenting dextrose; removing solids from the resulting fermentation broth; removing lactic acid from the clarified broth by extraction into an organic solvent; separating out the lactic acid-loaded organic solvent while recycling at least a portion of the remainder back to the fermentation step; reacting the lactic acid with ammonia to provide a dehydration feed comprising ammonium lactate while preferably recycling the organic solvent; carrying out a vapor phase dehydration of the ammonium lactate to produce a crude acrylic acid product; and purifying the crude acrylic acid by distillation followed by melt crystallization, chromatography or both melt crystallization and chromatography.

BACTERIAL AND YEAST COMBINATIONS FOR REDUCING GREENHOUSE GAS PRODUCTION DURING FERMENTATION OF BIOMASS COMPRISING PENTOSES

The present disclosure concerns a symbiotic combination of a bacterial host cell and a yeast host cell selected or engineered to utilize glycerol to reduce greenhouse gases during the production of ethanol from a biomass comprising pentoses.
