The steps include securedly fixing the anchoring end of the security rod or spike to the portable electronic device upon or through the housing, attaching an other end of the cable to the substantially immovable object and inserting the protruding end of the security rod into an opening in the locking device to actuate the internal locking mechanism and lock the locking device to the captive security rod. Locking the security rod to the locking device concurrently locks the portable electronic device to which it is anchored to the substantially immovable object.

Apparatuses for physically securing a laptop in an open position to a tabletop of a display table or to another display surface are disclosed. In an embodiment an apparatus includes a main body and left, right, and front arms that are extendable and retractable relative to the main body. Left, right, and front side braces are attached respectively to the left, right, and front arms, and are configured to be secured to left, right, and front sides, respectively, of a lower body portion of a laptop. Fasteners extend downward from the main body and are attachable to a tabletop or to another display surface. A lock mechanism can automatically lock the arms in place after they have been at least partially retracted to secure a lower body portion of a laptop to the main body. Releasing the lock mechanism can cause the arms automatically to return to fully extended positions.

The system may also include a display stem for holding the retainer and product. The display stem may include a recess for receiving at least a portion of the retainer body. The retaining cable may extend through the display stem and may simultaneously transmit power and data to a displayed product. The retainer may be returned to and held on top of the display stem using a retaining cable. The retainer may be oriented on top of the display stem in one or more predetermined positions through the use of magnetic forces.
