The disclosed technology includes an illumination system for a tree trunk of an artificial tree. The system may include a cylindrical shaped body, such that the outer surface of the body has a cylindrical shape. The inner surface of the body may include one or more diameters. One or more lighting modules may be positioned along the tree trunk to impart an internal lighting and/or glowing effect radiating therefrom.

The sting of ornamental lights is formed with an electrical wire interconnecting a plurality of ornamental lights interspaced along the wire that is connected on opposing wire ends to a male connector and a female connector. A retractable winding mechanism is arranged within the shell or housing for winding and maintaining the string of lights to a storage state and, for unwinding the string of lights to a deployment state.

A first electrical wire electrically couples between the inner socket of the first modular electrical connector and the inner plug of the second modular electrical connector. Also, a second electrical wire electrically couples between the outer plug of the first modular electrical connector and the outer socket of the second modular electrical connector. When two trunk sections are assembled together end-to-end, the trunk sections are mechanically and electrically coupled to form a modular electrical distribution system.

A resistive component is electrically connected across each LED and serves as a shunt to electrically bypass a failed LED to keep the remaining LEDs in the light string fully illuminated.
