Apparatus and methods for monitoring the emergence of soil pests in a two plant system are disclosed. In one embodiment, an emergence cage covers at least a portion of the root system of two plants. The emergence cage includes a frame defining a perimeter, a mesh or screen covering attached to the frame, a first plant opening configured to receive the first plant, a second plant opening configured to receive the second plant, and a collection container for collecting the pest of interest. The pests emerging from the ground under the cage are collected in the collection container, and the number collected is periodically determined.

Due to their disease transmission, mosquitoes are the deadliest animal, killing over a million people each year. In addition, mosquitoes cause discomfort for adults and especially children who may suffer heavily from mosquito bites. Indeed, a study shows that most respondents considered mosquitoes to be a problem. Unfortunately, a combination of environmental change and urbanization help mosquitoes spread into new areas. Spraying mosquito repellent to eliminate mosquitoes was shown to be harmful for humans as well, and other devices fail to eliminate all mosquitoes. Therefore, we propose the development of an insect killer drone. The drone will include a tiny gun that, once the drone approaches the mosquito, will be able to eliminate it. The system also includes a docking station that detects the mosquitoes and controls the drone. The drone is intended to be autonomous but may allow manual control of the drone and tiny gun.

A method for using the tarp system includes grounding a first tarp below a tree, saturating a roller with oil in the container, rolling oil onto the tarp with the roller, and tapping tree branches over the tarp to dislodge pests on to the tarp, placing a second tarp slightly under the first tarp, sweeping debris from the first tarp to the second tarp, and disposing of the second tarp.
