Systems, devices and methods for submarine CO.sub.2 scrubbing are disclosed. The system may comprise an assembly including a sorbent, a scrubbing inlet configured to receive a first airflow during an adsorption mode. The first airflow may comprise air received from a cabin of a submarine. The assembly may be configured to flow the first airflow over and/or through the sorbent during the adsorption mode such that the sorbent removes a portion of CO.sub.2 entrained in the first airflow. The system may also include a scrubbing outlet configured to expel the scrubbed first airflow from the assembly into the cabin. The system may include an outside air inlet configured to receive a second airflow comprising outside air during a regeneration mode. The system may include a regeneration air outlet in configured to expel the second airflow after the second airflow has flowed over and/or through the sorbent during the regeneration mode.

Dry processes, apparatus, compositions and systems are provided for reducing emissions of sulfur oxides, and sulfur dioxide in particular, and/or HCl and/or Hg in a process employing a combination of a lime-based sorbent, in particular hydrated lime and/or dolomitic hydrated lime, and a sorbent doping agent administered to achieve coverage of a three-dimensional cross section of a passage carrying SO.sub.x and/or HCl and/or Hg-containing gases with a short but effective residence time at a temperature effective to provide significant sulfur dioxide and/or HCl and/or Hg reductions with high rates of reaction and sorbent utilization. The once-through, dry process can advantageously introduce the sorbent and sorbent doping agent dry or preferably as a slurry to enable uniform treatment. Preferred sorbent doping agents include water-soluble or water-dispersible copper and/or iron compositions which can be heated to an active form in situ by the flue gases being treated.

Disclosed herein are methods for determining if a scavenging chemical mitigator, or its reaction or degradation product, will polymerized during or after mitigation treatments. This information allows for the optimization of mitigation treatments that pre-emptively control or prevent polymer formation. Such pre-emption measures reduce the cost and time related to remedial actions to treat polymer-fouled equipment.

Methods for fabrication of and use of magnesium oxide sorbents for room temperature carbon dioxide adsorption are provided. In accordance with one aspect, a method for fabrication of sorbents is provided which includes using calcination to obtain MgO—Mg(OH).sub.2 nano-composites and aging the MgO—Mg(OH).sub.2 nano-composites to form nano MCHs for room temperature carbon dioxide adsorption.
