MEMBRANE-BASED WASHING AND DEACIDIFICATION OF OILS
Membrane-based method of washing and deacidification of oils, wherein a stream of oil is conveyed from an oil reservoir along one side of porous hydrophobic membrane, and washing aqueous solution is conveyed along another side of this membrane. The membranes form hollow fibers, and their total surface area and porosity are large enough for efficient removal of fatty acids, water, ions and hydrophilic organic impurities from oil. Membrane pore size is small enough, so that hydrodynamic mixing of oil and aqueous solution does not take place. Additional stabilization of oil/water meniscus in the pores is achieved by transmembrane pressure difference.
Self-wetting porous membranes (I)
Disclosed is a self-wetting porous membrane comprising an aromatic hydrophobic polymer such as polysulfone and a wetting agent comprising a copolymer of formula A-B or A-B-A, wherein A is a hydrophilic segment comprising a polymerized monomer of the formula (I): CH.sub.2═C(R.sup.1)(R.sup.2), wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are as described herein, and B is an aromatic hydrophobic polymeric segment, wherein segments B and A are linked through an amidoalkylthio group. Also disclosed is a method of preparing a self-wetting membrane comprising casting a solution containing an aromatic hydrophobic polymer and the wetting agent, followed by subjecting the cast solution to phase inversion. The self-wetting porous membrane finds use in hemodialysis, microfiltration, and ultrafiltration.
PHOSPHORUS EXTRACTION AND RECOVERY SYSTEM (PEARS)
Separation methods and systems for converting high concentrations of animal wastes into nutrients and other useful products such as struvite and potassium struvite. Advantageously, the system and methods do not require the addition of external chemicals other than an acid and a base.
METHOD OF CLEANING A MEMBRANE CONTACTOR
The present invention includes a method of cleaning a membrane contactor comprising: connecting a membrane contactor having a first and a second surface, the membrane contactor being in liquid communication with a first and a second liquid circulation loop; rerouting the source of oil-containing liquid from the membrane contactor; draining the oil-containing liquid in contact with the first surface of the membrane contactor via a drain; circulating a cleaning oil over the first surface of the membrane contactor; pumping a collection fluid over the second surface of the membrane contactor; and contacting the oil-containing liquid with the first surface of the membrane contactor under pressure to maximize oil coalescence at the first surface of the membrane contactor while also circulating the collection fluid over the second surface of the membrane contactor to capture the coalesced oil.
Process for preparing an ester by alkoxycarbonylation
The invention relates to a process for preparing an ester by alkoxycarbonylation of a C2 to C20 hydrocarbon having at least one multiple bond, preferably having at least one olefinic double bond, in which the homogeneous catalyst system used is separated from the product mixture by means of membrane separation and recycled into the reaction zone. In a development of the present invention, the ester thus formed is converted into another ester by transesterification.

ATMOSPHERIC WATER GENERATION SYSTEMS AND METHODS UTILIZING MEMBRANE-BASED WATER EXTRACTION
An atmospheric water generation system absorbs water from an atmospheric air stream into a desiccant flowing along a flow path of a closed desiccant circulation loop. To ensure that the desiccant remains within the closed desiccant circulation loop, the atmospheric water generation system encompasses a membrane-based water extraction device that the desiccant flows through. The desiccant flows through the membrane-based water extraction device on a first side of a membrane, and the membrane separates the desiccant from a water-collection flow. Water absorbed into the desiccant passes from the desiccant, through the porous membrane, and into the water-collection flow, at least in part due to differences in temperature and/or pressure characteristics of the water flow and the desiccant flow. Water collected within the water-collection flow is directed to a storage tank for usage.
