A cutter assembly for a cutting tool has a super-hard volume of super-hard material having a proximal end and a distal end and including a cavity; and a cover member. The super-hard volume has a super-hard surface at the distal end including a cutting edge. The cavity has a cavity open end at the distal end. The super-hard surface includes a cavity peripheral area coterminous with the cavity open end and the cover member has a cover peripheral area configured to mate with the cavity peripheral area to allow the cover member to cover the cavity at the cavity open end, the covered cavity providing a housing chamber within the super-hard volume. A method of making a cutter assembly is also disclosed.

The brazed top clamp is made of a material that has a hardness that is greater than the material that makes up the tool holder. In certain embodiments, the tool holder has a slot that is in the shape of a “T-slot” and the top clamp is in the shape of a “T shaped rail” that is positioned within the “T-slot” of the tool holder.

A hydraulic expanding chuck having a main body which extends along a rotational axis and has a clamping part for receiving and clamping a shank tool and a shank part having a hollow shank for directly or indirectly coupling the hydraulic expanding chuck to a module of a modular tool system or to a machine spindle. The clamping part has a central receiving opening and, around the receiving opening, at least one pressure chamber to which fluid pressure can be applied and which is separated from the receiving opening via an elastically yielding expansion wall and is connected via a pressure duct to a pressure-generating device situated in the main body. The pressure-generating device is arranged axially in the region between the receiving opening and the hollow shank in a central cut-out, which is coaxial with the receiving opening and which opens into the hollow shank.

EXPANSION CLAMPING DEVICE AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING SAME

An expansion clamping device includes a base body and an expansion socket. The expansion socket is inserted into the base body to form a pressure chamber. The pressure chamber can be applied with a hydraulic medium while elastically deforming the expansion socket, in order to achieve a clamping effect in a receiving space which is open in the axial direction of the base body towards a face side and is surrounded by the expansion socket in the circumferential direction. The expansion socket has an elastically deformable clamping section and a collar projecting outwardly in the radial direction on the face side. The expansion socket bears with a bearing surface of the collar in the axial direction against a contact surface of a contact shoulder of the base body and, at least in the region of the bearing surface, is firmly connected, in particular by a material bond, to the base body. The clamping section transitions into the collar in a transition region, a recess being formed in the expansion socket in the transition region in such a way that the transition region overlaps over the contact shoulder of the base body in regions, the bearing surface of the expansion socket bearing against the contact surface in a radially outer contact region thereof, and the contact surface having a radially inner free region adjacent to the contact region, in which free region the expansion socket does not bear against the contact surface.

CUTTING INSERT AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURING CUTTING INSERT

A cutting insert includes a substrate and a cutting-edge insert. The substrate has, in a thickness direction of the substrate, a bottom surface, and a top surface opposite to the bottom surface. The top surface has a polygonal shape composed of a plurality of sides in a plan view as seen along the thickness direction. The top surface is provided with a projection projecting to a side opposite to the bottom surface along the thickness direction. The projection has a through-hole passing through the substrate along the thickness direction. The projection has a side surface contiguous to the top surface. The side surface is composed of a curved line protruding to a side opposite to the through-hole in the plan view as seen along the thickness direction.

A chip breaker is formed in the chamfer inside of the cutting edge, extending between a lower chamfer portion and an upper chamfer portion. The chip breaker includes a chip breaker bottom connected to the lower chamfer portion and a chip breaker wall extending from the upper chamfer portion to the chip breaker bottom. An upper transition is formed between the upper chamfer portion and the chip breaker wall. As seen in a top view, the upper transition follows a smoothly curved path including a convex middle portion. As seen in cross-section, perpendicular to the cutting edge, the chip breaker wall and the chip breaker bottom form a smooth concave profile.

The cutting insert includes a sintered body having a cutting edge, and a base body having a leading end where the sintered body is joined via a braze material. The sintered body includes a front surface on a leading side, an upper surface connected to the front surface and forming the cutting edge with the front surface along a connecting edge with the front surface, a bottom surface opposite the upper surface, a back surface opposite the front surface, and two side surfaces. The sintered body and base body are joined together in a joint surface including the bottom surface and back surface of the sintered body. The joint surface in side view has a step-like shape with a leading side thereof being lower than a trailing side thereof.

Throwaway insert

The throwaway insert includes a base and a cutting edge member. The cutting edge member includes a rake face, a flank face, a first connecting face, a second connecting face, and a first ridgeline serving as a cutting edge. The rake face includes a main surface and a first chamfer provided at an edge tip portion of the cutting edge member, the edge tip portion including an extreme tip portion of the cutting edge member. In a plan view from an upper surface of the base, the flank face, the first connecting face, and the second connecting face are located external to the base. The first chamfer is inclined relative to the main surface so as to increase a thickness of the cutting edge member as the first chamfer is closer to the main surface.
