A thermal management method and system in a vehicle include a chiller to cause heat transfer between a coolant loop that defines a path in which a coolant circulates and a refrigerant loop that defines a path in which a refrigerant circulates. The system includes an electronic expansion valve (EXV) in the refrigerant loop to control a flow of the refrigerant into a first part of the chiller, and a coolant pump in the coolant loop to control a flow of the coolant into a second part of the chiller. A controller controls the EXV and the coolant pump based on a target amount for the heat transfer.
APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR CONTROLLING FUEL CELL
An apparatus for controlling a fuel cell includes a cooling module that cools a fuel cell stack, a first temperature sensor that measures ambient air temperature of a vehicle, and a processor that, when a cooling fan of the cooling module is detected to be defective, determines a fail-safe control method depending on a defect situation of the cooling fan, sets a first limit level depending on the ambient air temperature, sets a second limit level depending on a state of charge (SOC) of a battery and an output requirement, and controls limitation of output of the fuel cell stack, based on at least one of the fail-safe control method, the first limit level, or the second limit level.
Heat pump system and method for operating said system
Methods and systems are provided for operating a climate control system. In one example, a method for operating a vehicle climate control system includes modeling a pressure in a heat pump downstream of an exterior heat exchanger an upstream of an expansion valve. The method also includes operating the expansion valve to cool a vehicle cabin using the modeled pressure in conjunction with a temperature from a sensor positioned upstream of the expansion valve and downstream of the exterior heat exchanger.
Electrified vehicle refrigerant system
A thermal system for an electrified vehicle including a thermal loop and a controller is provided. The thermal loop may include a rear evaporator and a compressor fluidly connected thereto, a conduit to distribute oil throughout the thermal loop, and an evaporator valve. The controller may be programmed to, responsive to receipt of a signal indicating evaporator valve shut-off and detection of a vehicle plug-in event, cycle the compressor to promote oil movement through the compressor. The controller may be further programmed to, responsive to receipt of the signal, open the evaporator valve to force oil back to the compressor. The thermal loop may further include a first expansion valve up stream of a chiller fluidly connected to the compressor, a second expansion valve between the evaporator valve and the rear evaporator, and a third expansion valve up stream of a front evaporator fluidly connected to the compressor.

A system for controlling fluid temperature in a thermal system includes a heat source, a heat sink coupled to the heat source, a first heat exchanger and a second heat exchanger, a first expansion valve configured to regulate the flow of coolant between the heat source and the first heat exchanger, a second expansion valve configured to regulate the flow of coolant between the heat source and the second heat exchanger, and a controller. The controller is configured to determine an operating condition of the thermal system and generate a first control signal to control the first and second expansion valves to direct the flow of coolant to the first and second heat exchangers. The first and second expansion valves are arranged in parallel to recover heat rejected from the coolant and distribute the recovered heat to the first and second heat exchangers.
Control system for a heating system and method for operating a heating system
A control system for a heating system of an electric or hybrid vehicle with a coolant cooled high voltage store. The control system includes an air conditioning evaporator of a refrigeration circuit of the heating system through which refrigerant circulates to cool the passenger compartment when a cooling requirement for a passenger compartment of the vehicle and for which an air conditioning cooling mode is set. The system further includes a chiller to cool the high voltage store when a cooling requirement for the high voltage store of the vehicle and for which a high voltage store (HVS) cooling mode is set. The control system selects the regulating variable for the compressor from a plurality of different regulating variables based on whether the air conditioning cooling mode is set, whether the HVS cooling mode is set, and/or whether both the air conditioning cooling and HVS cooling modes are set.
Thermal management for electrified vehicle
A thermal management system for an electrified vehicle and a method for managing such a system, according to an exemplary aspect of the present disclosure includes, among other things, a first cooling circuit, a second cooling circuit, and a third cooling circuit. The first cooling circuit cools a battery pack and includes a battery chiller in fluid communication with a cooling system inlet to the battery pack. The second cooling circuit cools the battery chiller and includes at least a first compressor and a first condenser in fluid communication with the battery chiller. The third cooling circuit cools a passenger cabin and includes at least a second compressor and a second condenser, and wherein the third cooling circuit is independent of the second cooling circuit.
