An apparatus for helping to protect an occupant of a vehicle includes an airbag configured to inflate and deploy away from a vehicle roof toward a vehicle seat. The airbag includes a base portion configured to be connected to the vehicle roof and a cushion portion in fluid communication with the base portion. The cushion portion extends from the base portion toward the vehicle seat to an inflated and deployed condition in which the cushion portion is configured to receive and cushion an occupant seated on the vehicle seat. The apparatus also includes a deployment pocket for initially restricting the deployment of the cushion portion without restricting the base portion.

An airbag device 100 is provided with a bag-shaped airbag cushion 112 in a prescribed rolled or folded stowed form, and a cover member 114 for covering an outer periphery of the airbag cushion 112 in stowed form formed of a ductile fabric material containing a plurality of polymer fibers. The cover member 114 has a hard portion 124 in a state in which at least a portion of the plurality of polymer fibers are melted together, and a soft portion 126 that bends more readily than the hard portion 124 in which the percentage of the plurality of polymer fibers that are melted is at least lower than that of the hard portion 124. The airbag device 100 is characterized by a state in which the cover member 114 is bent along the soft portion 126, covering at least a portion of the outer periphery of the airbag cushion 112 in stowed form.

An air curtain delivery assembly includes an arcuate extruded unitary channel and an inflatable air curtain. The channel includes a longitudinal length defining an arc substantially matching a fore-aft curvature of a vehicle roof panel and having an open mouth defining a ramp for directing deployment of the inflatable air curtain from an interior of the channel and inboard of a vehicle side structure. The channel may further be configured and dimensioned for attaching to a portion of the vehicle roof panel and beneath a trim piece overlying the vehicle side structure. The driver airbag apparatus includes an airbag housing disposed behind the steering wheel, an airbag cushion accommodated in the airbag housing and configured to be deployed by gas injected thereinto toward the region in front of the steering wheel through a space between the obstacle and the steering wheel, and a housing cover coupled to the airbag housing so as to cover an opening in the airbag housing and configured to be ruptured by the deployment pressure of the airbag cushion so as to open the airbag housing to a limited angle toward the region in front of the steering wheel.

An occupant protection device of the present embodiment includes a lower panel and an airbag device disposed on a front side of a lower end portion of the lower panel with a gap. The airbag device includes an airbag that is deployed and inflated so as to rise from a lower side of the lower end portion of the lower panel to the side of a back surface, as a design surface, of the lower panel to protect the knee of the occupant when inflation gas flows in, and a blocking member that rotates backward and blocks the gap when the airbag is inflated. A contact surface portion which is contact with the blocking member that rotates backward is formed on the lower end portion of the lower panel. The contact surface is formed on the lower side of a flange portion that extends forward from a bent portion.
