A system for and method of cleaving a bond between a first atom and a second atom in a molecule of a material are presented. One embodiment of the technique includes selecting a first electromagnetic radiation frequency, the first electromagnetic radiation frequency including a product of a golden mean and a base frequency associated with at least one of the first atom and the second atom. Such an embodiment further includes directing a first electromagnetic radiation at the material, where the first electromagnetic radiation has a frequency equal to the first electromagnetic radiation frequency, and where the first electromagnetic radiation frequency is sufficient to cleave the bond between the first atom and the second atom.

PLATINUM-TUNGSTEN SOLID SOLUTION PARTICLES AND CATALYST CONTAINING SAME

An object of the present invention is to provide platinum-tungsten solid solution particles that can be suitably used for catalyst applications and others. Another object is to provide a catalyst with higher catalytic activity than when platinum is used alone. Disclosed are platinum-tungsten solid solution particles comprising platinum and tungsten in solid solution at an atomic level. Also disclosed is a catalyst comprising the platinum-tungsten solid solution particles.

A photocatalytic device includes a substrate having a surface, and an array of conductive projections supported by the substrate and extending outward from the surface of the substrate. Each conductive projection of the array of conductive projections has a semiconductor composition. The semiconductor composition establishes a photochemical diode. The surface may be nonplanar such that subsets of the array of conductive projections are oriented at different angles.

Mechanically-assisted gaseous addition of hydrogen to metal alloys

An article formed of a metal alloy is covered at least partially with a metal hydride and a shell metal to form an assembly. Load is applied to the assembly and the assembly is heated. The shell metal deforms around the article and the metal hydride and forms a gas proof seal. The metal hydride thermally decomposes to form hydrogen gas. At least a portion of the hydrogen gas dissociates and moves as monoatomic hydrogen into the article. The metal alloy can be a zirconium metal alloy, the metal hydride can be a zirconium metal hydride, and the shell metal can be substantially copper.
