SAFE AROMATICS

A method for reducing the mutagenicity of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAC's) having one or more bay regions which involves alkylating the PAC's with an alkylating agent in the presence of a catalyst to lower the mutagenicity down to as much as about 0.1. The resulting alkylated polycyclic aromatic compounds retain their physical and chemical properties for safe industrial use including as rubber processing oils, inks, etc.

A process is provided for producing linear alkylbenzenes with an improved yield from paraffin feed due to the use of a new catalyst that has a reduced selectivity to produce undesired aromatic compounds. In some embodiments, it is now possible to operate the process without including a unit to remove such aromatic compounds which allows for an operator of a plant to make modifications to the process to increase product yield.

Alkylation processes using liquid Lewis acid catalysts

An alkylation process is described. The alkylation process includes contacting a feed comprising a paraffin or an aromatic with an olefin feed in the presence of a liquid Lewis acid catalyst in an alkylation reaction zone under alkylation conditions to form a reaction mixture comprising alkylation products and the liquid Lewis acid catalyst. The liquid Lewis acid catalyst is the liquid reaction product of a donor molecule and a metal halide. The alkylation products are separated from the liquid Lewis acid catalyst and recovered.

Treatment of aromatic alkylation catalysts

The present disclosure relates to a process for producing a mono-alkylated aromatic compound using a treated catalyst made by a method of this invention is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of heating an untreated catalyst in the presence of a gaseous stream having a dew point temperature less than about 5 C. to form a treated catalyst. The treatment is effective to improve the activity and selectivity of the catalyst.
