Electrically-actuated resettable downhole anchor and/or packer, and method of setting, releasing, and resetting

An electric motor-actuated packer and/or anchor (EMAP/A) apparatus and method for use in downhole operations. The apparatus includes a packer subassembly and/or a slip subassembly and can be: set in a packer and anchor mode; set in an anchor-only mode without energizing the packer elements; repeatedly set and unset without run-in string manipulation; run in a multiple, or redundant, configuration within a given tool string, with each EMAP/A apparatus capable of being set/unset independently of the others; and combined within a tool string in a straddle packer configuration, with inverted and non-inverted EMAP/As providing the ability to isolate an interval of interest from both above and below the interval. Among other uses, the apparatus and method are well suited for application in a single-trip, e-coil conveyed completion system, and particularly one providing for radial hydraulic jetting.

A system that is positionable in a wellbore in a subterranean formation can include a first transceiver that is positionable external to a casing string in the wellbore. The first transceiver can wirelessly transmit data via a signal within a frequency band that is selected based on a fluid property of a fluid in the wellbore and a property of the subterranean formation. The system can also include a second transceiver that is positionable externally

Downhole Communications Using Frequency Guard Bands

A system that is positionable in a wellbore can include a chain of transceivers that are positionable external to a casing string. Each transceiver in the chain of transceivers can be operable to transmit a wireless signal using a separate frequency guard band that is assigned to that transceiver and to receive wireless signals using another frequency guard band assigned to a prior transceiver in the chain of transceivers.

Downhole Wireless Communications Using Surface Waves

A communication system that is positionable in a wellbore can include a first transceiver for coupling externally to a casing string. The first transceiver can be for wirelessly transmitting data by generating and modulating a surface wave that propagates along an interface surface. The surface wave can include an electromagnetic wave that has a magnetic field or an electric field that is at an acute angle to a direction of propagation of the surface wave. The communication system can also include a second transceiver for coupling to the casing string and for wirelessly receiving the surface wave and detecting the data.

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR DOWNHOLE SENSING

A downhole sensing system includes a casing connector configured to fluidly couple segments of a downhole conduit through which a fluid flows. The downhole sensing system includes a sensing device disposed in the casing connector and configured to measure one or more parameters. The downhole sensing system also includes a wireless communication device disposed in the casing connector and configured to wirelessly communicate one or more parameters.

DYNAMIC SENSING OF THE TOP OF CEMENT (TOC) DURING CEMENTING OF A WELL CASING IN A WELL BORE

A well casing is cemented in a well bore in a subterranean formation by pumping cement slurry down into the well casing so that the cement slurry flows up into an annulus surrounding the well casing. While pumping the cement slurry, the position of the top of the cement slurry in the annulus is sensed, and the rise of the sensed position of the top of the cement slurry in the annulus is recorded as a function of time. The recording is analyzed to evaluate the cement job. For example, the analysis may indicate a problem addressed by adjusting a cement plan for a future cement job, and the analysis may indicate a need to repair a location of the set cement by perforating the well casing at the location to be repaired, and pumping cement slurry down the well casing to fill the location to be repaired.

CASING COUPLING HAVING COMMUNCATION UNIT FOR EVALUATING DOWNHOLE CONDITIONS

A communication unit is situated in or on a casing collar. The casing collar has two threaded ends for joining casing joints to construct a well casing, and a communication unit is disposed in or on a central region of the tube between the two threaded ends. In an example, the communication unit has a transmitter for transmitting sensor data uphole from a sensor sensing a well bore condition. For example, the communication unit has a receiver for receiving sensor data from Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) sensors, a transceiver for interrogating RFID tags, an acoustic transceiver for sensing wellbore conditions, a pressure sensor, a temperature sensor, and batteries for powering the communication unit.

Treatment Methods for Water or Gas Reduction in Hydrocarbon Production Wells

Systems and methods for reducing unwanted water and/or gas intrusion into a hydrocarbon production wellbore. The system includes a treatment injection tool for injecting a treatment agent into portions of the formation surrounding the wellbore and a tunneling tool for forming one or more tunnels within the formation. Sensors provide real-time information about wellbore parameters during treatment so that wellbore analysis can be conducted.
