A damping apparatus includes a damping unit 30 composed of a plurality of damping plates 36 having plasticity, a holding member 31 holding at least one ends of the damping plates 36 in a manner to allow deflection of the damping plates 36 with the damping plates 36 laminated together, and a contact member 33 provided at a position spaced from a holding position of the holding member 31, and attached to an outermost one of the damping plates 36, or extending through and held by the damping plates 36 in such a manner that it can be brought into contact with the outermost one of the damping plates 36 and can be moved in an extending direction thereof. The damping unit 30 is supported by a support mechanism 2 in such a manner that the contact member 33 can be brought into contact with an object W.

Further included is a pair of piston assemblies that are disposed within opposing ends of the sleeved opening being supported by the plurality of flexible finger assemblies, wherein the piston assemblies move in opposing and equal amounts in reciprocating movement within the sleeved opening being supported and controlled by the plurality of flexible finger assemblies, thus the pair of piston assemblies are able to do compressive work on a fluid within the sleeve without bearings or seals.

Magnetically damped isolator and pointing mount

A magnetically damped mounting and isolation system with pointing capability. A payload is mounted to an isolator plate, a base plate is mounted to a satellite or other space vehicle, and the isolation system provides damping of all six degrees of freedom of isolator plate motion relative to the base plate. Three bidirectional magnetic dampers are connected between the isolator plate and the base plate and arranged to provide the required amount of temperature-independent damping. The bidirectional magnetic dampers can be connected to the base plate and the isolator plate in different configurations based on desired mass and natural frequency characteristics. Flexures which statically position the isolator plate are also designed to optimize normal modes of vibration. The isolation system may include a motion amplification feature to increase magnetic damping effectiveness, and the isolation system may also include active positioning of the payload relative to the satellite.

A flexure bearing includes an inner race, an outer race, and a plurality of substantially planar radially extending blades coupled between the inner and outer race. The blades have a thickness that is thinner than a thickness of the inner and outer races. The inner race, outer race, and blades have substantially the same height. At least one heating element is coupled to the inner race and/or the outer race. The heating element is configured to apply heat to the race that it is coupled to in order to tune the flexure bearing.

A vibration damping device for use with a downhole tool having a tool axis and a drill string component (DSC), may comprise an inertia ring rotatably mounted on the DSC and including at least one cutout defining a chamber therein such that the DSC forms an end wall of the chamber, and a leaf spring disposed in the chamber, the leaf spring having first and second spring ends, the first end being attached to the inertia ring or the DSC such that relative rotation between the inertia ring and the DSC distorts the leaf spring. The second spring end may engage the other of the inertia ring or the DSC. A fluid may be included in the chamber and the spring may divide the chamber into two portions, so that relative rotation between the inertia ring and the DSC distorts the leaf spring and varies the volumes of the portions.
