FIBER-TO-WAVEGUIDE COUPLERS WITH ULTRA HIGH COUPLING EFFICIENCY AND INTEGRATED CHIP WAVEGUIDES INCLUDING THE SAME
An easy-to-fabricate and highly efficient single-mode optical fiber-to-single-mode optical waveguide coupler having relatively large horizontal and vertical alignment tolerances between the fiber and the waveguide coupler. The waveguide coupler also features ease of end-facet cleaving. The waveguide coupler can be used in ultra-broadband high coupling efficiency applications or other suitable applications. Single-mode on-chip waveguides incorporating such coupler(s) are also provided, as are methods of manufacturing the waveguide coupler and on-chip waveguide.
Waveguides having highly suppressed crosstalk
An optical waveguide includes a first waveguide core, a second waveguide core, a first subwavelength multilayer cladding, a second subwavelength multilayer cladding and a third subwavelength multilayer cladding. The first waveguide core and the second waveguide core have a width (w) and a height (h). The first waveguide core is disposed between the first subwavelength multilayer cladding and the second subwavelength multilayer cladding. The second waveguide core is disposed between the second subwavelength multilayer cladding and the third subwavelength multilayer cladding. Each subwavelength multilayer cladding has a number (TV) of alternating subwavelength ridges having a periodicy (A) and a filling fraction (p). A total coupling coefficient (|/c|) of the first waveguide core and the second waveguide core is from 10 to 0.
SELF-LIT DISPLAY PANEL
A self-lit display panel includes a photonic integrated circuit payer including an array of waveguides and an array of out-couplers for out-coupling portions of the illuminating light through pixels of the panel. The self-lit display panel may include a transparent electronic circuitry layer backlit by the photonic integrated circuit layer; the two layers may be on a same substrate or on opposed substrates defining a cell filled with an electro-active material. The configuration allows for chief ray engineering, zonal illuminating, and separate illumination with red, green, and blue illuminating light.
FOCAL POLARIZATION BEAM DISPLACER
Embodiments herein describe a focal polarization displacer with a birefringent crystal disposed within the focal region of a lens. The birefringent crystal separates optical signals into at least two separate signals based on having different polarization states and an optical axis of the birefringent crystal is set so that focal points of the two separate signals are at an output surface of the polarization displacer where the two separate signals are output from the polarization displacer. This output surface can be a surface of the birefringent crystal or a surface of additional layer coupled to the crystal such as a polarization rotator or dielectric layer.
HIGH BANDWIDTH PHOTONIC INTEGRATED CIRCUIT WITH ETALON COMPENSATION
A photonic integrated circuit device can comprise one or more layers having different refraction indices that cause optical coupling issues and losses from layer variations. A film of material can be applied to a layer of the photonic integrated circuit to avoid the issues to increase the optical bandwidth of the photonic integrated circuit device and decrease sensitivity to manufacturing and design processes.
Angled grating couplers with inclined side edge portions
Structures for a grating coupler and methods of fabricating a structure for a grating coupler. The structure includes a grating coupler having a central portion and edge portions. The central portion and the edge portions define a sidewall, and the central portion and the edge portions have a first longitudinal axis along which the edge portions are arranged in a spaced relationship. Each edge portion projects from the sidewall at an angle relative to the first longitudinal axis. A waveguide core is optically coupled to the grating coupler. The first longitudinal axis is aligned in a first direction, and the waveguide core has a second longitudinal axis that is aligned in a second direction different from the first direction.
