LIGHT MODULATION DEVICE HAVING HIGH LIGHT EFFICIENCY
20230024541 · 2023-01-26 ·

The invention relates to a light modulation device having pixels. Essentially, the one half of the pixels are reflective and the other half of the pixels are transmissive. The reflective pixels are arranged in alternation with the transmissive pixels in the same substrate plane. The light modulation device also has a backplane, which has transistors and data lines for conducting signals to the pixels. Each pixel is assigned at least one transistor and at least two data lines. The transistors and the data lines of each adjacent pair of a reflective pixel and a transmissive pixel are arranged under the reflective pixel.

20230229001 · 2023-07-20 · ·

An apparatus and method for providing pixelated occlusion is disclosed. The apparatus includes a display, a unitary and transmissive optical component, and a contact lens. The display provides a display image. The unitary reflective and transmissive optical component receives the display image and forms a reflected display image having a first polarization and receives a scene image and forms a transmitted scene image. The contact lens forms a combined image including the reflected display image and the transmitted scene image. The pixelated display includes one or more occluding pixels having a second polarization with the first polarization substantially orthogonal to the second polarization. The pixelated display is included anterior to the unitary and reflective optical component.

Display system

A power reduced display includes a light source having an available space and configured to generate a backlight, a first display having multiple first pixels, wherein each first pixel is configured to selectively pass and block the backlight, a second display having multiple second pixels. The light source includes a first number of first packages each having a single light-emitting diode. The first number is a largest number of the first packages that fit in the available space of the light source. The first number of the first packages is configured to consume a first power to produce a particular luminance. A second number of second packages each having two light-emitting diodes alternatively fit in the available space and is configured to consume a second power to produce the particular luminance. The first number is greater than the second number. The first power is less than the second power.

Display system

A local-dimming display generally includes a light source configured to generate a backlight, a first display aligned with the light source and having multiple first pixels, wherein each first pixel is configured to selectively pass and block the backlight, and a second display aligned with the first display and having multiple second pixels. A particular pixel is controlled to pass the backlight. The particular pixel corresponds with an aligned pixel and multiple parallax pixels of the first pixels controlled at a first transmit level, and multiple neighboring pixels of the first pixels controlled at one or more second transmit levels. The one or more second transmit levels are less than or equal to the first transmit level. The first pixels cooperating at the first transmit level and the second transmit levels selectively presents the backlight to the second display with a declining intensity pattern in the neighboring pixels.

High transmission light control film

A light control film comprises a light input surface and a light output surface opposite the light input surface; alternating transmissive regions and absorptive regions disposed between the light input surface and the light output surface, wherein the absorptive regions comprise a core having a first concentration, C.sub.1, of a light absorbing material sandwiched between cladding layers having a second concentration, C.sub.2, of the light absorbing material, wherein C.sub.2<C.sub.1, and wherein the cores have an aspect ratio of at least 20.

A reflective-type display screen and a control method thereof, and a display device are provided. The reflective-type display screen comprises, a display panel, a compensation light source, a detector module and a processor module. The display panel comprises a reflection surface, the display panel is configured to reflect light by the reflection surface to realize display; the compensation light source is in the display panel; the detector module is on a light-outputting side of the display panel and is configured to acquire an intensity of ambient light outside the display screen; and the processor module is respectively connected with the detector module and the compensation light source and is configured to control operation of the compensation light source based on the intensity of the ambient light acquired by the detector module.

Roll of film including multilayer birefringent reflective polarizer having low pass axis variation

Rolls of film are described. In particular, rolls of film including multilayer birefringent polarizers having low pass axis variation are described. The multilayer birefringent polarizers have low pass axis variation across a full crossweb width of the roll of film.

Polarizer stack

A polarizer stack including an absorbing polarizer and a multilayer polymeric reflective polarizer bonded together is described. The absorbing polarizer has a first block axis and the reflective polarizer has a second block axis substantially parallel to the first block axis. The reflective polarizer may be substantially free of micro-wrinkling when the polarizer stack adhered to a glass layer is heated at 95° C. for 100 hours.

Optical film stack including retardation layer

Optical film stacks are described. More particularly, optical film stacks including a half-wave retardation layer are described. Achromatic half-wave retardation layers, including achromatic half-wave layers formed from a quarter-wave and a three-quarters-wave retardation layer, are described. Film stacks including reflective polarizers tuned to reduce wavelength dispersion of the half-wave retardation layer are also described.

Directional display apparatus

A switchable privacy display comprises a spatial light modulator (SLM), a first switchable liquid crystal (LC) retarder and first passive retarder arranged between a first pair of polarisers and a second switchable LC retarder and second passive retarder arranged between a second pair of polarisers. Each switchable LC retarder comprises a homeotropic alignment layer and a homogeneous alignment layer. In privacy mode, on-axis light from the SLM is directed without loss, whereas off-axis light has reduced luminance to reduce the visibility of the display to off-axis snoopers. The display may achieve privacy operation in landscape and portrait orientations. Further, display reflectivity may be reduced for on-axis reflections of ambient light, while reflectivity may be increased for off-axis light to achieve increased visual security. In public mode, the liquid crystal retardance is adjusted so that off-axis luminance and reflectivity are unmodified. The display may be switched between day-time and night-time operation.
