Cost efficient method for communicating from an appliance to an external device

Provided is a household appliance including a user interface with a visible indicator that conveys primary operational information indicative of an operational aspect of the household appliance to a user during normal operation of the household appliance, and a controller. The controller receives a signal indicative of diagnostics data of the household appliance and causes the visible indicator to transmit a communication signal to an external device that interprets the communication signal and communicates the diagnostics data to the user. The visible indicator provides a two-way communication between the household appliance and the external device. A method for diagnosing a household appliance is also provided.

METHOD FOR CONTROLLING DISCHARGE FLOW RATE IN A LOSS-IN-WEIGHT SCALE

A discharge flow rate of a loss-in-weight scale is controlled by continuously changing control outputs to save the time necessary for data stabilization. A curve relating the discharge flow rate and the control output is obtained by using the functional relationship between the control output and time and the functional relationship between the material weight and time. The discharge flow rate can be precisely controlled by directly selecting or inputting a value of the control output, to achieve the objectives of direct controlling and of avoiding the time for data stabilization.

A stove controller starts an unattended timer when a cooking process is started. The controller monitors whether motion is detected in the kitchen prior to the unattended timer expiring and resets the unattended timer each time motion is detected. If the unattended timer expires without any motion being detected, the controller disables the heating elements of the stove and starts a return timer. The controller monitors whether motion is detected in the kitchen prior to the return timer expiring. When motion is detected, the controller automatically re-enables the heating elements of the stove so that cooking can continue. If motion is not detected and the return timer expires, the controller locks the stove until a reset procedure is performed. Alerts of the stove activity are sent to external devices over the Internet, and the reset procedure may be performed on the controller or on one of the external devices.
