A system and method for the preparation of electronic publications or “ePubs” that provide a rich multimedia experience to readers using any of a variety of user devices, without requiring those individuals wishing to prepare such ePubs to install proprietary client applications on the computing device used to prepare the ePubs, and without the need to download a large portion or all of the ePub to enable viewing on an electronic device of an end-user.

Disclosed herein is a web user experience improvement for digital magazines. A digital magazine viewing platform is integrated with a digital magazine publishing platform including features that leverage the integration including user interface arrangement based on viewing habits and ripped content that is insertable into draft digital magazine documents. Systems, methods, and computer-readable media for automatically updating an electronic word processing document based on a change in a linked file and vice versa are disclosed. The systems and methods may involve accessing the electronic word processing document; identifying in the electronic word processing document a variable data element; accessing the external file identified in the link; pulling, from the external file, first replacement data corresponding to the current data; replacing the current data in the electronic word processing document with the first replacement data; identifying a change to the variable data element in the electronic word processing document; upon identification of the change, accessing the external file via the link; and updating the external file to reflect the change to the variable data element in the electronic word processing document.

Systems, methods, and computer-readable media for automatically updating an electronic word processing document based on a change in a linked file and vice versa are disclosed. The systems and methods may involve accessing the electronic word processing document; identifying in the electronic word processing document a variable data element; accessing the external file identified in the link; pulling, from the external file, first replacement data corresponding to the current data; replacing the current data in the electronic word processing document with the first replacement data; identifying a change to the variable data element in the electronic word processing document; upon identification of the change, accessing the external file via the link; and updating the external file to reflect the change to the variable data element in the electronic word processing document.

A method and a file format transformation system (FFTS) for transforming marked-up content in a first file format (FFF) to a second file format (SFF) that enables automated browser based pagination are provided. The FFTS reflows marked-up content of the FFF into a continuous page. The FFTS generates and appends tags to spaces and block elements identified in the reflown marked-up content of the FFF. For each space and block element, the FFTS determines and tags line breaks in the reflown marked-up content. For each line break, the FFTS identifies, tags, and positions anchored floats and footnotes on a current page based on space availability. The FFTS positions page breaks in the continuous page based on a configurable page height and the line breaks. The FFTS groups the marked-up content, inserts pagination elements and renders the grouped marked-up content in the SFF based on a selected level of reversibility.
