SYSTEM AND PROCESS FOR TEACHING SPEECH TO PEOPLE WITH HEARING AND/OR SPEECH DISABILITIES
A system and process to teach building words to individuals with hearing, auditory processing or speech disabilities utilizing unique visual shapes having a unique color to represent each of the phonemes of the English Language and a corresponding set of index cards or objects for each unique visual shape, where each set of index cards or objects have a letter or combination of letters thereon that have the sound of the corresponding unique shape representing the phoneme. Each set of index cards or objects having the letter or combination of letters in the same color as the corresponding unique shape.

Communications training system
A communications training system is provided having a user interface, a computer-based simulator and a performance measurement database. The user interface is configured to receive a speech communication input from the user based on a training content and the computer-based simulator is configured to transform the speech communication to a text data whereby the text data can be aligned to performance measurement database values to determine a performance measure of the speech communication. The format of the text data and the performance measurement database values enable the speech communication to be aligned with predefined performance measurement database values representing expected speech communications for that training content.

System and method for dual mode presentation of content in a target language to improve listening fluency in the target language
Embodiments of a language learning system and method for implementing or assisting in self-study for improving listening fluency in a target language are disclosed. Such embodiments may simultaneously present the same piece of content in an auditory presentation and a corresponding visual presentation of a transcript of the auditory presentation, where the two presentations are adapted to work in tandem to increase the effectiveness of language learning for users.
Variable-speed phonetic pronunciation machine
A machine causes a touch-sensitive screen to present a graphical user interface that depicts a slider control aligned with a word that includes a first alphabetic letter and a second alphabetic letter. A first zone of the slider control corresponds to the first alphabetic letter, and a second zone of the slider control corresponds to the second alphabetic letter. The machine detects a touch-and-drag input that begins within the first zone and enters the second zone. In response to the touch-and-drag input beginning within the first zone, the machine presents a first phoneme that corresponds to the first alphabetic letter, and the presenting of the first phoneme may include audio playback of the first phoneme. In response to the touch-and-drag input entering the second zone, the machine presents a second phoneme that corresponds to the second alphabetic letter, which may include audio playback of the second phoneme.
Assessing Reading Ability Through Grapheme-Phoneme Correspondence Analysis
A computing device translates a spoken word into a corresponding ordered set of spoken phonemes and analyzes correctness of the spoken word relative to a target word. The analyzing includes attempting to locate each of the spoken phonemes in an ordered set of grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPCs) describing the target word, and determining whether or not the ordered set of spoken phonemes comprises a same number of phonemes as in the ordered set of GPCs. The analyzing also includes comparing the order of the ordered set of spoken phonemes against the order of the ordered set of GPCs. The computing device generates a report, based on the analyzing, that identifies at least one of the GPCs in the ordered set of GPCs as having been incorrectly applied in decoding the target word.
Adaptive language learning
A method for adaptive language learning comprises receiving, by a processor, a response from a user in response to a first prompt. The first prompt is intended to test one or more language skills of the user. The method includes analyzing one or more characteristics of the response to determine one or more scores for the response. The one or more scores are determined based on a comparison of the one or more characteristics of the response to a predefined response to the prompt. The method includes determining a language proficiency for the user based on the determined one or more scores. The method includes dynamically selecting a second prompt to present to the user. The second prompt is selected based on the user's language proficiency and intended to further test the user's one or more language skills.
