Abstract
The invention related to single photon emission systems based on nano-diamonds. Single-photon sources have a broad range of applications in quantum communication, quantum computing and quantum metrology.
Claims
1. A method for producing a single photon source, comprising: lithographic patterning of a polymer on top of a plasmonic thin film, performing functionalization of top surfaces of the thin film and the polymer, removing of the polymer leaving patterned functionalized sites on the plasmonic thin film surface, selectively targeting nanodiamond particles to the patterned functionalized sites, thus forming a nanodiamond -surface assembly being an essential part of the single photon source.
2. The method of claim I, further comprising: addressing individually by an excitation laser each color center in nanodiamond particles thus producing a single photon emission.
3. The method of claim 1, wherein targeting of the nanodiamond particles is based on a bonding of a chemical nature.
4. The method of claim 1, wherein targeting of the nanodiamond particles is based on a bonding of an electrostatic nature.
5. A single photon emitter, comprising: a first metallic thin film being deposited on a substrate, the first metallic thin film being further modified by plasmonic or high index dielectric nanostructures, further comprising a nanodiamond particle placed on top of the nanostructured thin film; a dielectric material being deposited on top of the nanodiamond particle, and a second metallic thin film is deposited in order to achieve a metal/insulator/metal waveguide structure for specific wavelengths and modes.
6. The single photon emitter of claim 5, further comprising: a laser emitting radiation which incouples to the nanodiamond particle; the emitter outputting a single photon light.
7. The single photon emitter of claim 6, wherein the nanostructured thin film is designed for directing emitted photons into one direction of a waveguide.
8. The single photon emitter of claim 6, wherein the metallic thin film on an excitation side is designed thinner in order to achieve a high laser pump incoupling efficiency.
9. The single photon emitter of claim 8, wherein incoupling is enhanced by using an optical diode surface that allows high transmission in one direction and high reflection in another direction.
10. The single photon emitter of claim 8, wherein an incoupling surface is a spectrally selective layer that allows high transmittance for laser pump wavelengths and high reflection for emitted photon wavelengths.
11. The single photon emitter of claim 5, wherein the dielectric layer comprises two parts; a first part being about a half of the total dielectric layer thickness is deposited prior to coupling of the nanodiamond particle, while a second part is deposited after coupling of the nanodiamond particle.
12. A method for producing a single photon source, comprising: performing functionalization of a top surface of a plasmonic thin film, depositing a polymer on top of a functionalized plasmonic thin film, lithographically patterning of the polymer, selectively targeting nanodiamond particles to the functionalized thin film, thus forming a nanodiamond -surface assembly being an essential part of the single photon source.
13. The method of claim 12, further comprising: addressing individually by an excitation laser each color center in nanodiamond particles thus producing a single photon emission.
14. The method of claim 12, wherein targeting of the nanodiamond particles is based on a bonding of a chemical nature.
15. The method of claim 12, wherein targeting of the nanodiamond particles is based on a bonding of an electrostatic nature.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
[0013] A colloidal assembly of a nanodiamond combined with a surface functions as substrate/nanoparticle system. A lithographic patterning is used for controlled staging of the nanodiamond. A surface functionalization is achieved by surfactants with different functional groups at the boundary of substrate and particles. The attachment is of chemical or electrostatic nature.
[0014]
[0015] Coupling of an electromagnetic wave to the nanodiamond is achieved via several variations of routines. One of the methods described here is the design of a metal/insulator/metal waveguide structure encapsulating the nanoparticle.
[0016] The scheme described in
[0017] In this design, it is possible to increase the pump coupling efficiency or emitted photon efficiency by means of parameters including but not limited to the metallic or dielectric materials, layer thicknesses, light wavelengths, nanostructure shapes and dimensions etc.
