Abstract
A portable treestand for hunters includes a one piece supporting platform, seat and post molded from a light weight thermoplastic material. The unitary construction of the platform and seat eliminates a large number of fabrication steps and related fastening techniques and devices used therewith. As a result, the platform and seat are stronger, lighter and more rigid, free from many potentially movable joints, and may be made with an irregular pattern.
Claims
1. The invention claimed is a portable treestand for demountable attachment to the trunk of a tree, said treestand comprising: a main supporting platform made of molded thermoplastic; said platform adapted to be attached at an inner platform edge to the tree trunk, and to extend generally horizontally outward from the trunk to an outer platform edge; said platform being of uniform, one piece rigid molded construction having an open grate configuration; and, attachment knobs connected to said platform for attaching said platform to the tree.
2. The invention claimed as set forth in claim 1 wherein the underside of the platform is flat and free of any structure depending downwardly there from.

The invention claimed as set forth in claim 1 wherein open grate configuration includes a series of openings adjacent to the edges of said platform; said series of openings are to receive the ratchet strap attachment knobs from climbing sticks; the attachment knobs of the climbing sticks are what the ratchet straps hook to when they are wrapped around a tree trunk when trying to hang a climbing stick onto a tree; the openings adjacent to the edges of the platform will be a key shaped hole to receive the rounded knob of the climbing sticks; each opening will have a circular hole slightly larger in diameter than the head of the climbing stick attachment knob; at one quadrant of the circular hole there will be a slot that is formed to thus make the opening look like a key shaped hole; where the hole meets the slot the platform will be made such that the clearance at this point is actually less than the diameter of the neck of the climbing stick attachment knob, thus creating a detent that will hold the attachment knob from shaking loose during transport; the climbing stick attachment knob will be pushed down through the hole in the top surface of the treestand platform until the head of the knob passes through far enough to let the smaller diameter neck of the attachment knob line up with the top surface of the treestand platform; once the climbing stick attachment knob is engaged in the larger hole the user would then pull on the climbing stick in the direction of the slot, thus forcing the climbing stick attachment knob's neck to pass by the detent and then be resting in the remaining portion of the slot; the treestand platform can have multiple climbing stick attachment key hole shaped openings molded into its surface to allow for transport and storage of multiple climbing sticks.

[0014] The platform 11 of the treestand 10 is attached adjacent to its inner edge 13 by a lower hinged connection 12 to a rigid center post 14. A seat 15 is attached by upper hinged connection 16 to the upper end of the center post 14. The seat 15 may be similar to the platform 11, but of a substantially smaller size, and comprised of a one piece molded plastic construction.
[0015] The primary mounting attachment for the treestand consists of two attachment knobs 17 connected to the center post 14. These knobs are to hold the ends of ratchet straps that extend around the tree trunk then attach back to the same knob. This happens at both of the attachment knobs 17. The treestand cleat 18 includes a reverse V-shape that engages the trunk of a tree to aid in setting up in a crooked tree. The downward pivotal movement of the main supporting platform 11 from an initial vertical position against the tree trunk, causes the center post 14 to move outwardly from the tree trunk, puts the ratchet straps in tension, and causes the teeth in the V-shaped notch 20 to bite into the tree. The main supporting platform 11 is maintained in a generally horizontal position with a pair of supporting cables 21 each of which is connected by its upper end to the center post 14 just below the upper hinged connection 16 and by its lower end to the lateral edge of the platform at a point outward from the tree trunk. The inner edge 13 of the platform is provided with a large V-shaped notch 22 which is also provided with teeth on its tree-engaging face to help hold the treestand securely in position once the ratchet straps have been securely locked around the tree trunk.
[0016] The overall pattern 23 resulting from the positioning of the interior members 28 defines a plurality of openings 24, most of which are generally small enough to provide adequate support for a hunter standing thereon. The pattern of openings 24 is preferably symmetrical with respect to a center post 14.
[0017] Another significant advantage of the unitary molded construction of the platform 11 is that all features necessary to accommodate attachment or connection to the other components of the treestand may be molded integrally into the platform, thereby avoiding fabricated assembly or attachment of additional pieces. Likewise, accessory features may also be included in the integral molding, as will be described hereinafter. For example, the lugs 34 on the inner edge 13 to accommodate the pin for the lower hinged connection 12 are integrally molded into the platform. As indicated, the inclusion of all necessary integral attachments and any auxiliary attachments may be made without utilizing supplemental welding, mechanical fasteners, or any other fabrication techniques or devices, all of which would otherwise add to assembly time and cost, create joints which may potentially weaken the structure, and introduce movable joints which may result in undesirable noises.

[0019] The inherent strength increase using a solid unitary molded plastic construction allows the size of the interior members 28 to be reduced, as well as their spacing. The solid plastic construction also reduces the transmission of noise more common in constructions utilizing hollow tubular structural members.
