Abstract
A balance card the always maintains a balance between $0.00 and $0.99 that provides cents amount to any transaction involving a dollar amount and cents amount. If the card balance is high enough to cover the cents amount of the transaction, that is subtracted from the card. If the card balance is not high enough, the total transaction amount is augmented by $1.00 and the change amount from this is added to the card.
Claims
1. A system for allowing purchase transactions with no coin change, the system comprising: a plurality of storage devices issued to or possessed by a plurality of consumers, wherein each storage device can store only a number between 0.00 and 0.99; a merchant point of sale system constructed to read and update the number on any of said storage devices, wherein, when a consumer makes a purchase and presents one of said storage devices to the point of sale system, the point of sale system reads the number between 0.00 and 0.99 on the storage device presented; the point of sale system, after totaling an amount for a purchase consisting of a dollar amount and a coin amount, the coin amount being between $0.00 and $0.99, compares the coin amount with the number read from the storage device presented; if the number read from the storage device presented is greater or equal to the coin amount of the purchase, the point of sale system requires tender of only the dollar amount of the purchase from the consumer, and the point of sale system updates the number stored on the storage device presented to the number read from the storage device presented minus the coin amount of the purchase; if the number read from the storage device presented is not greater or equal to the coin amount of the purchase, the point of sale system requires tender of the dollar amount of the sale plus one dollar, and the point of sale system updates the number stored on the storage device presented to an amount equal to the number read from the storage device presented plus (one dollar minus the coin amount of the purchase); wherein, the consumer only pays full dollar amounts.
2. The system for allowing purchase transactions with no coin change of claim 1 wherein at least one of the plurality of storage devices is a card.
3. The system for allowing purchase transactions with no coin change of claim 2 wherein the card is issued by a particular merchant with an initial value of the number stored on the card of 0.00.
4. The system for allowing purchase transactions with no coin change of claim 1 wherein one of the plurality of storage devices is a handheld electronic device.

A system for allowing purchase transactions with no coin change, the system comprising: a plurality of storage devices issued to or possessed by a plurality of consumers, wherein each storage device can store a PIN related to a unique account stored on a remote computer, the account having only a balance between $0.00 and $0.99; a merchant point of sale system constructed to read the PIN, and to access the unique account and read and update the balance of the unique account, wherein, when a consumer makes a purchase and presents one of said storage devices to the point of sale system, the point of sale system reads the PIN number on the storage device presented and reads the balance of the unique account as a starting balance; the point of sale system, after totaling an amount for a purchase consisting of a dollar amount and a coin amount, the coin amount being between $0.00 and $0.99, compares the coin amount with the starting balance of the unique account; if the starting balance of the unique account is greater or equal to the coin amount of the purchase, the point of sale system requires tender of only the dollar amount of the purchase from the consumer, and the point of sale system updates the balance of the unique account to the starting balance minus the coin amount of the purchase; if the starting balance is not greater or equal to the coin amount of the purchase, the point of sale system requires tender of the dollar amount of the purchase plus one dollar, and the point of sale system updates the balance of the unique account to an amount equal to the starting balance plus (one dollar minus the coin amount of the purchase); wherein, the consumer only pays full dollar amounts.
8. The system for allowing purchase transactions with no coin change of claim 7 wherein at least one of the plurality of storage devices is a card.
9. The system for allowing purchase transactions with no coin change of claim 8 wherein the card is issued by a particular merchant with an initial value of the balance in the unique account of $0.00.
10. The system for allowing purchase transactions with no coin change of claim 7 wherein one of the plurality of storage devices is a handheld electronic device.
11. The system for allowing purchase transactions with no coin change of claim 10 wherein the handheld electronic devices is a smartphone.
12. The system for allowing purchase transactions with no coin change of claim 11 wherein an initial value of the number stored in the unique account is $0.00.

A method for creating sales transactions involving no coin change comprising: issuing a balancing card or telephone application presenting a code associated with an account that can only contain an amount between $0.00 and $0.99; scanning said card or code after completion of a transaction at a point of sale, said transaction requiring payment of a dollar amount and a cents amount, the cents amount between $0.01 and $0.99; if said account contains an amount greater or equal to the required cents amount of the transaction, subtracting the cents amount of the transaction from the account; if said account does not contain an amount greater or equal to the required cents amount of the transaction, augmenting the required dollar amount of the transaction by $1.00 and adding the difference between $1.00 and the cents amount of the transaction to the account; wherein, the consumer only pays full dollar amounts.
14. The method of claim 13 wherein said account maintained on a physical card.

In one particular embodiment, the customer ID and total value are both encrypted with merchant's public key. This information can only be decrypted with the merchant's private key which is stored securely in the RFID device 4 or the POS terminal 1. This has a weakness that a hacker knowing the merchant's public key can alter the value on the card. Alternatively, the information may be encrypted and decrypted with a single key known only to the merchant. This is the most secure technique, and prevents unauthorized value addition to the card. These methods do not cover the case of a lost card. Use of a lost or stolen card can be prevented by also storing an optional encrypted user password or PIN on the card. To redeem value, the user would be required to enter this password or PIN on a keyboard. The use of a key known only to the merchant has the disadvantage of the card only working for one merchant.

[0033] As stated, a particular embodiment of the present invention uses a barcode. The barcode can be carried by a consumer on a key chain or on a small card like a credit card or other device, or it could be displayed on the screen of a cellular telephone or smartphone. Instead of receiving coin change, the consumer can simply scan the barcode past a barcode reader (or alternatively hand the card containing the barcode to the clerk for scanning). A stored account can then be augmented. To redeem, the barcode can be scanned to pay for a purchased item or service up to whatever amount is in the account.

[0035] When value is to be retrieved from the card, a similar process can occur. A command from the POS specifies a particular value to be taken from a particular customer card. When a card is sensed, the customer ID is read, and if it matches, the current total value on the card. If the request is for more than the amount on the card, the RFID device can return an error. It should be noted that the balancing card will never contain more than $0.99 nor go below $0.00.

The first purchase it is used for will raise the total to the next higher dollar, and the coin part of the change will be put on the balancing card. From the point of view of the customer this is exactly like the customer had handed the clerk the next higher dollar amount and then received coin change, except that the coin change goes onto the card (or more likely into an account associated with the card).
[0046] The great advantage of this embodiment of the invention is that if the balancing card is lost or stolen, the most that can be lost from the account is $0.99, and usually less than that. Thus, the balancing card is virtually useless to a thief. However, the balancing card provides the tremendous advantage of purchases that never use coin change, especially considering that a smartphone can easily play the role of a balancing card by simply displaying a bar code or Quick Response code (QR code) on the screen.
