    Abstract

A device is provided for assembling components of a mixing syringe for use in a dental procedure. For this assembly, the components of interest include a beak and a mixing tip for the syringe. Specifically, the device includes a top plate formed with a hole, and a support member for the top plate that maintains the hole at a predetermined height H above a surface when the device is placed on the surface. For an assembly operation, the beak is supported on the device with a portion of the beak inserted downwardly through the hole of the top plate. This also extends a gripping member of the beak upwardly above the top plate. A grab ring of the mixing tip is then pushed against the gripping member of the beak for their engagement with each other. They are then removed together from the device and engaged with the mixing syringe.

    DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0021] Referring initially to FIG. 1, an assembly device in accordance with the present invention is shown and is generally designated 10. As shown in FIG. 1 the assembly device 10 includes a top plate 12 that is formed with a through hole 14. Also shown in FIG. 1 is a support member 16 that is connected to the top plate 12 of the assembly device 10 at the perimeter 18 of the top plate 12. As intended for the present invention, and as shown in FIG. 1, the assembly device 10 is to be operationally positioned on a surface 20.

[0022] Still referring to FIG. 1, it is to be appreciated that a mixing syringe 22 is to be assembled in accordance with the present invention. In detail, the mixing syringe 22 will include a syringe body 24, a mixing tip 26 and a beak 28. As noted above, the mixing tip 26 and the beak 28 are typically provided as separate components of the mixing syringe 22 and are preferably assembled on-site at the location where the mixing syringe 22 is to be used.

[0023] FIG. 1 also shows that a tapered tube 30 constitutes a distal portion of the beak 28, and a gripping member 32 constitutes a proximal portion of the beak 28. Further, FIG. 1 shows the mixing tip 26 includes a straight tube 34 that defines an axis 36. As shown, the straight tube 34 has a distal end 38, with a connector 40 attached at its opposite end. A mixing chamber 42 extends along the axis 36 between the distal end 38 and the connector 40 and has a mixing screw 44 for mixing separate materials as they are pushed from the syringe body 24 through the mixing chamber 42.

[0024] Referring to FIGS. 2 and 3, in sequence, it can be appreciated that, with the beak 28 positioned on the assembly device 10 where its tapered tube 30 is surrounded by the support member 16 (FIG. 2), the distal end 38 of the mixing tip 26 can be pushed down onto gripping member 32 of the beak 28 (FIG. 3), to engage the mixing tip 26 with the beak 28. At this point the mixing tip 26 is joined with the beak 28 and this structural combination can be removed from the assembly device 10 for connection with the syringe body 24. A more detailed disclosure for this engagement is provided with reference to FIGS. 4 and 5.

[0025] In FIG. 4 it is shown that the beak 28 is formed with a lumen 48, and has a beveled grip 50 that is formed with a projection 52 as part of the gripping member 32. It is also shown that the gripping member 32 includes a ledge 54 which has an outer diameter D.sub.o. Importantly, an annular recess 56 is established for the gripping member 32 between the ledge 54 and the projection 52 of the beveled grip 50. FIG. 5 shows that when the mixing tip 26 is engaged with the beak 28 (see FIG. 3), a grab ring 58 is seated in the annular recess 56 of the beak 28.

[0026] While the particular System and Method for Engaging Beaks and Mixing Tips as herein shown and disclosed in detail is fully capable of obtaining the objects and providing the advantages herein before stated, it is to be understood that it is merely illustrative of the presently preferred embodiments of the invention and that no limitations are intended to the details of construction or design herein shown other than as described in the appended claims.
