[0243] Measurement of Fabric Staining
[0244] Fabric staining of UV filter compositions was measured by the L*a*b as described above. The measurement was performed with a spectrophotometer using the following instrument: Remission Spectrometer Datacolor SF 400 (light D65, observer 10°).
[0245] The difference between the color of a UV filter composition stain on a white textile and the color of the white textile alone was determined following the assumption that ΔE*=Δb* in order to determine fabric staining. The lower the color difference, the lower is the fabric staining.
[0246] Further, the difference between the color of a UV filter composition stain on a white textile after 1 or 3 washing cycles and the color of the white textile alone was determined following the assumption that ΔE*=Δb* in order to determine the washability. The lower the color difference in comparison to the value obtained before washing, the more has fabric staining been reduced, i.e. the better the washability of the sunscreen composition from textiles.
[0247] For applying the UV filter compositions in order to make a stain on a white textile, the UV filter composition was diluted in water or ethanol at a concentration of 10% by weight based on the total weight of the diluted mixture. 300 mg (15 mg/cm.sup.2) of the diluted mixture is applied on a white textile (whiteness adjusted to WG 170±10, after washing WG 190±10) in order to obtain a stain.
[0248] For determining the washability, 1 or 3 washing cycles were performed in a washing machine using a temperature of 40° C. for 20 minutes and Persil Universal Gel obtained from Henkel (3 g on stain). Each textile was washed separately.
[0249] The results for the comparative composition 1 and composition 1 are shown in Table 3 and
[0250] The results of comparative compositions 2, 3 and compositions 2, 3 are shown in Table 4.

[0251] As can be seen from the results above, comparative Composition 2 containing only oil soluble UVA filters exhibits a strong fabric staining. Composition 2 containing DPDT instead of BMBDM shows a significant fabric staining reduction. Comparative Composition 3 containing Tinosorb S Lite Aqua as a water dispersed UV filter instead of DPDT shows that this UVA filter present in the water phase is not appropriate for fabric staining reduction. Composition 3 containing both DHHB and BMBDM and DPDT shows fabric staining reduction.
[0252] In a further step, the following filter combinations have been tested to show that not every UV filter present in the water phase is suitable to contribute to reduction of fabric staining. Table 5 shows a test series with various UV filters present in the water and oil phase incorporated in emulsions and their performance in reducing fabric staining.

[0253] The test emulsions are prepared as follows: Part A and B are heated to 80° C. under stirring. Part A is added into B under stirring and homogenized. When present phase C premixed under ultra turrax device is added. It is cooled down to room temperature. When present phase D is added. The pH is checked to be >7.

[0255] Test emulsion 1 contains an oil soluble UVA filter resulting in fabric staining, which is not appreciated by the consumers. Conversely, Test emulsion 2 contains only UVA water soluble filter showing no fabric staining but lower UVA protection than required (UVA-PF measured was equal to 3.7 instead of expected 5.7 (Table 5). The inventive UV filter combination DHHB and DPDT (oil soluble and water soluble) brings about a reduction in fabric staining in test emulsion 3 by simultaneously keeping the UVA performance. In test emulsion 4 DPDT is replaced by Tinosorb S Lite Aqua which is a water dispersed UVA filter. There is no positive effect on fabric staining and washability.
