Abstract
The combination hair band and comb assists people with activities of daily living (ADLs). The combination hair band and comb includes an elongate fabric hair band having a series of small internal combs that assist the user in combing/brushing their hair. A first end of the band is attached to one end of a spring clip, and the opposite second end of the band passes through a hole at the other end of the spring clip. In use, the hair band is tightened by pulling the distal end of the band through the hole in the spring clip. The spring clip is then fastened to maintain the band in the desired position. The internal plastic combs extend through an internal slit in the band and comb the hair as the band is pulled rearward through the user's hair, by the user grasping and pulling the distal end of the band.
Claims
1. A combination hair band and comb, comprising: an elongate hair band comprising fabric material and having a first end, a second end, an outer surface, an inner surface, and a slit extending axially in the inner surface of the elongate fabric hair band, the band having an elongate cavity defined between the inner surface and the outer surface; a plurality of internal, spring-loaded plastic combs extending end to end in the cavity defined in the hair band, each of the combs having teeth extending through the slit defined in the inner surface of the elongate fabric hair band; and a spring clip having a hinged first end, an opposite second end, and a hole defined in the clip adjacent the second end of the clip, the first end of the hair band being attached to the clip adjacent the hinged first end of the clip, the second end of the hair band being extendable through the hole defined in the clip adjacent the second end of the clip; wherein the plurality of internal, spring-loaded plastic combs are mounted in at least one comb assembly having: an elongate U-shaped housing defining an elongate internal space and an open mouth, the housing having spaced apart retainer flanges extending towards each other across the open mouth and defining an elongate slot; a plurality of individual rectangular comb units having sides and ends, the plurality of individual rectangular comb units being arranged end to end in the elongate internal space of the elongate housing; and a plurality of helical springs arranged between the ends of the individual rectangular comb units to maintain an equal spacing between the individual rectangular comb units.
2. The combination hair band and comb as recited in claim 1, wherein each of the rectangular comb units has a width and each of the helical springs has a diameter, the width of the rectangular comb units being larger than the slot in the elongate housing, the retainer flanges maintaining the rectangular comb units and the helical springs within the housing.
3. The combination hair band and comb as recited in claim 2, wherein each of the rectangular comb units further comprises a plurality of comb teeth extending through the slot in the housing and through the slit defined in the inner surface of the elongate fabric hair band.
4. The combination hair band and comb as recited in claim 3, wherein the elongate U-shaped housing is covered by cotton and disposed in the elongate cavity defined between the inner surface and the outer surface of the elongate fabric hairband.
5. The combination hair band and comb as recited in claim 4, wherein the hole defined in the clip adjacent the second end of the clip has a diameter, the spring-loaded combs having an end dimension larger than the diameter of the hole, whereby when the second end of the hair band is pulled through the hole in the clip, the spring-loaded combs are blocked from going through the hole and the helical springs are compressed, reducing space between the individual rectangular comb units.
6. The combination hair band and comb as recited in claim 5, wherein the spring clip further comprises: a generally rectangular planar base plate having a hinged end and an opposite open end, the hole in the spring clip extending through the base plate adjacent the open end of the base plate; and a generally rectangular, planar clamping plate having a hinged end pivotally attached to the hinged end of the base plate and an opposite free end, the first end of the band being attached to the clamping plate adjacent the hinged end of the clamping plate, the spring clip being made of resilient material and biased into an open position, the free end of the clamping plate and the open end of the base plate being urged apart so that the second end of the band can be pulled through the hole defined in the base plate.
7. The combination hair band and comb as recited in claim 6, wherein: the open end of the base plate includes a latching member, the latching member having: a bent main portion angled toward the clamping plate; and a latching catch extending from, the main portion toward the hinged end of the base plate; and the free end of the clamping plate includes a lip, the free end of the clamping plate being pivotal toward the open end of the base plate so that the lip on the free end of the clamping plate is held under the latching catch of the base plate in order to fasten the spring clip, thereby compressing the band between the clamping plate and the base plate so that the band cannot be pulled farther through the hole in the base plate.
8. The combination hair band and comb as recited in claim 7, wherein the lip is releasable from the latching catch of the base plate by applying pressure to a tip end of the main portion of the latching member.
9. The combination hair band and comb as recited in claim 1, wherein the spring clip further comprises: a generally rectangular planar base plate having a hinged end and an opposite open end, the hole in the spring clip extending through the base plate adjacent the open end of the base plate; and a generally rectangular, planar clamping plate having a hinged end pivotally attached to the hinged end of the base plate and an opposite free end, the first end of the band being attached to the clamping plate adjacent the hinged end of the clamping plate, the spring clip being made of resilient material and biased into an open position, the free end of the clamping plate and the open end of the base plate being urged apart so that the second end of the band can be pulled through the hole defined in the base plate.
10. The combination hair band and comb as recited in claim 9, wherein: the open end of the base plate includes a latching member, the latching member having: a bent main portion angled toward the clamping plate; and a latching catch extending from the main portion toward the hinged end of the base plate; and the free end of the clamping plate includes a lip, the free end of the clamping plate being pivotal toward the open end of the base plate so that the lip on the free end of the clamping plate is held under the latching catch of the base plate in order to fasten the spring to clip, thereby compressing the band between the clamping plate and the base plate so that the band cannot be pulled farther through the hole in the base plate.
11. The combination hair band and comb as recited in claim 10, wherein the lip is releasable from the latching catch of the base plate by applying pressure to a tip end of the main portion of the latching member.
