Abstract

A box with a lid having first and second opposed pairs of downwardly projecting legs which partially overlie the sides of the box to close the same. The length of the first pair of downwardly projecting legs is less than the length of the second pair of downwardly projecting legs. A generally horizontal ledge is formed in each side of the box with the ledges of two opposed sides of the box located at one level below the lid and those of the other opposed sides at a different level below the lid. In use, the first and second pairs of legs can either be supported on either one or the other pair of opposed ledges to vary the height of the lid above ground level. Also, the lid can be removed from the box to define a stool or support surface.

Claims

1. A device, comprising: a box, including: a base; a first pair of opposed sidewalls and a second pair of opposed sidewalls extending from the base, the first pair of opposed sidewalls each including a first ledge and the second pair of opposed sidewalls each including a second ledge with the first ledges extending from the first pair of opposed sidewalls at a first distance relative to the base and the second ledges extending from the second pair of opposed sidewalls at a second distance relative to the base less than the first distance, both the first distance and the second distance being less than a height of the first pair of opposed sidewalls and a height of the second pair of opposed sidewalls; a lid attached to the first pair of opposed sidewalls or the second pair of opposed sidewalls; and a cover configured to be located on the box, the cover having an upper surface coupled to a first pair of sides and a second pair of sides, a length of the first pair of sides being less than a length of the second pair of sides, the second pair of sides each having a lower edge with a first portion, a second portion, and a third portion, the first portion and the third portion being horizontal and the second portion being curvilinear and positioned between the first portion and the third portion, wherein during operation, the cover is removed from the box and employed as a support surface with the lower edges of the second pair of sides arranged as feet of the support surface.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the second ledges of the second pair of opposed sidewalls of the box each include a curved central section.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein the second pair of sides of the cover have a first width proximate the upper surface of the cover and a second width proximate the lower edge of the cover that is less than the first width.

4. A box, comprising: a trunk, including: a base; a plurality of sidewalls coupled to the base including a first pair of opposed sidewalls and a second pair of opposed sidewalls coupled to the first pair of opposed sidewalls; and a plurality of ledges in the plurality of sidewalls, the ledges in the first pair of opposed sidewalls located at a first distance relative to the base and the ledges in the second pair of opposed sidewalls located at a second distance relative to the base less than the first distance, both the first distance and the second distance being less than a height of the trunk; and a cover configured to be coupled to located on the trunk, including: an upper surface; and a plurality of sides coupled to the upper surface of the cover including a first pair of sides and a second pair of sides coupled to the first pair of sides, the first pair of sides having a first length and the second pair of sides having a second length greater than the first length, the second pair of sides each having a lower edge with a first portion, a second portion, and a third portion, the first portion and the third portion being horizontal and the second portion being curvilinear and positioned between the first portion and the third portion, wherein, during operation, the cover is removed from the trunk and employed as a support surface with the second pair of sides of the plurality of sides of the cover arranged as feet of the support surface configured to engage a ground surface.

5. The box of claim 4 wherein the trunk and the cover both have a square or rectangular cross section.

6. The box of claim 4 further comprising: a lid positioned below the cover and extending over the trunk.

7. The box of claim 4 wherein the second portion of the lower edge of each of the second pair of sides of the cover is located centrally relative to the lower edge.

8. The box of claim 4 wherein the second pair of sides of the cover have a first width proximate the upper surface of the cover and a second width proximate the lower edge that is less than the first width.

9. The box of claim 8 wherein each of the second pair of sides have an interface between the first width and the second width that is curvilinear.

10. The box of claim 4 wherein the ledges in the second pair of opposed sidewalls of the trunk include a curved central section.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE SEVERAL VIEWS OF THE DRAWINGS

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

(10) The box illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 5 comprises an open-topped trunk section 10 closable by a cover 12. The trunk section 10 of the box is of rectangular cross-section and comprises opposed pairs of side walls 14 and 16 and a base.

(11) The cover has a generally horizontal upper surface 18 bordered by downwardly extended sides 20 and 22. The sides 20 extend downwardly from opposite sides of the cover and are each of a length which corresponds to approximately one third of the height of the trunk section 10. The lower edge 24 of each side 20 is generally horizontal and extends across the full width of the respective side 20.

(12) The length of each of the sides 22 is the same and equates to approximately two thirds of the height of the trunk. The lower edge 25 of each side 22 comprises a curvilinear central section 26 bordered by two generally horizontal sections 28.

(13) Thus, the side walls 14 are mirror images of one other and, likewise, the side walls 16 are also mirror images of one another.

(14) The quoted lengths are given simply by way of example and it is to be understood that other lengths may be adopted. In an embodiment, it is preferable that the lengths of the sides 20 and 22 are different.

(15) Below the level of the sides 20, the width of each side 22 is reduced, a curvilinear corner 30 being provided at each such width reduction.

(16) The side walls 14 of the trunk section 10 each include a generally horizontal ledge 32 whose width and length equate to those of the edges of the sides 20 of the cover 12. Similarly, each side wall 16 includes a ledge 34 including sides 36 and central section 38 whose width, length and shape complement those of the width, length and shape of the lower edges of the sides 22 of the cover 12.

(17) The box maybe produced from any suitable material, these including wood, hardboard, metal, plastics or a similar relatively rigid or semi-rigid material. Thus, the box can be assembled from separate pieces of material by well-known joining procedures, or could be cast from plastics or metal as a single piece or as separate pieces for subsequent assembly.

(18) The box is shown in its fully closed configuration in FIG. 1 and in its partially or fully open positions in FIGS. 2 and 3.

(19) As will be seen from FIG. 3, the open upper surface of the box maybe closed by a second removable lid 40 which, in a preferred embodiment, comprises a suitably dimensioned sheet which rests on a ledge formed around the rim of the box upper surface.

(20) In use, the box can act simply as a container for, for example, carrying work tools from one location to another, access to the box interior being simply achieved by removing the cover 12 and, if in place, the second lid 40. If required, the box can also serve as a work surface by replacing the cover 12. The height of this work surface is simply the height of the box.

(21) Additionally or alternatively, as shown in FIG. 4, the cover 12 can be removed from the box and used as a stool or table, the four legs of the stool or table being defined by the generally horizontal side sections 28 of each side wall 22, with the upper surface 18 of the lid defining a seat or work surface. The floor engaging side sections 28 act in the same way as the legs of a stool or table to provide firm and stable contact with a floor surface.

(22) As will be seen from FIG. 5, with the lid 40 in place, the box can be used as a second working or support surface.

(23) The box illustrated in FIGS. 6 to 9 is square in cross section rather than rectangular. Where appropriate, the same reference numerals have been adopted for this embodiment as were used for the previous embodiment.

(24) One advantage of this second embodiment is that, as shown in FIG. 8, the cover 12 can be removed from its position as shown in FIGS. 6 and 7, then turned through a right angle and relocated onto the box with its generally horizontal side sections 28 located on the ridges 32. In this way the height of the box is increased to provide a work or support surface at a further different height to that illustrated in FIG. 6

(25) Whereas the illustrated boxes are described as being of rectangular or square section, the invention applies equally to boxes of circular or multi sided cross section.

(26) In an embodiment, wheels may be attached to the box to assist movement between different locations. Also, a handle may be secured to one or more sides of the box for ease of transportation. Such a handle may be extendable. In this way the box could be used instead of a conventional suitcase when travelling with the added advantage that the cover 12 can be removed and employed as a stool and the lid 40 employed as a table or work surface when, for example, a delay occurs at, say, an airport.

(27) The box could also include road wheels and act as a vehicle trailer.

(28) In the above description, certain specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of various disclosed embodiments. However, one skilled in the relevant art will recognize that embodiments may be practiced without one or more of these specific details, or with other methods, components, materials, etc. In other instances, well-known structures associated with storage containers have not been shown or described in detail to avoid unnecessarily obscuring descriptions of the embodiments.
