DESCRIPTION
[0026] With reference to the drawings, a device 30 having features of the present invention comprises a body 32 having spaced apart, substantially parallel first and second side walls 34, each side wall 34 having an outer surface 36 and an inner surface 38, the two inner surfaces 38 facing each other. There is a slot 40 between the side walls 34. Each side wall 34 has a first end 44 and an opposed second end 46. A first holder system 48 is mounted between the first ends 44 of the side walls 34 and a second holder system 50 is mounted between the second ends 46 of the side walls 34. Both holder systems 48 and 50 can pivot at least 270 degrees on an axis 51 (
[0027] The first holder system 50 comprises a first mount 52 for removably mounting a first tool, namely a first extractor 54 as shown in the figures, and the second holder system 50 comprises a second mount 56 for removably mounting a second tool, namely a second pipe extractor 58. Preferably the first 54 and second 58 extractors are different, such as having a different diameter, so that the device 30 can be used with pipes of different diameter for versatility.
[0028] As shown in
[0029] Preferably the outer surfaces 36 of the side walls 34 have grooves 71 or furrows or comparable structure for secure gripping by a user. The configuration of the grooves 71 shown in the figures is principally for decorative purposes.
[0030] As best shown in
[0031] Preferably each holder system 48, 50 comprises a ratchet system so that each holder system 48, 50 system can rotate 360 degrees, but only in one direction. Each ratchet system 82 can comprise angled teeth 84 in each mount, with a pair of opposed pawls or cogs 86 that fit between the teeth 84, with a biasing spring 88 therebetween, the biasing spring exerting an outward force.
[0032] The device 20 can be made out of metal, or a strong plastic such as nylon, ABS, or polystyrene, or combinations of those materials.
[0033] Preferably one or both of the outer surfaces 36 of the side walls 34 has a longitudinally extending slot 92 in which can be held an auxiliary tool or implement 94, as best shown in
[0034] In use, a user holds the device 30, pivots one of the holder systems away from the slot 40 into a working position, such as shown in
[0035] Among the advantages of the present invention is the device is versatile in that different types of tools can be used, and when used with pipe extractors, different types of extractors can be used. Moreover, the tool can be pivoted to a desired working position for reaching difficult to access structures, such as broken pipes, that need to be worked on.
[0036] Although the present invention described in detailed with regard to preferred versions thereof, other versions are possible. For example, the device 30 could be used with tools other than extractors. One or both of the extractors can be replaced with a tool such as a screw driver head, a chisel head, a socket, or file. The mechanism used for holding a tool on one of the mounts need not be the same for both mounts. In addition, other holding systems other than a detent/mating projection can be used for holding a tool in place on the mount system, such as a compression fit, or threads that mate with a corresponding thread on the tool.
