Abstract
A ball striking device has a head that includes a metal face configured for striking a ball, a rearwardly extending metal band, a top piece, and a bottom piece. The metal band has a first end extending from one side of the face, a second end extending from the opposite side of the face, and a rear portion extending between the first and second ends and defining at least a portion of the rear periphery of the head. The top piece and the bottom piece are non-metallic or substantially non-metallic. The top piece is connected to the top side of the metal band and forms at least a portion of a top side of the head, and the bottom piece is connected to the bottom side of the metal band and forms at least a portion of a bottom side of the head. The top piece and the bottom piece are separated by the metal band.
Claims
1. A ball striking device comprising: a head comprising: a first component comprising a metal material; and at least one second component comprising a non-metallic material; wherein: the first component and at least one second component are connected to define a hollow center cavity; wherein the first component further comprises: a face located at a front of the head and having a ball striking surface configured to strike a golf ball; a band extending in a rearward direction from the face to define a periphery of the head; the band further comprising a first end connected to a first side of the face, a second end extending from a second side of the face, opposite the first side, and a rear portion disposed between the first and second ends; wherein the rear portion of the band is positioned below a volumetric centerline of the head; the band and the face define a first opening on a top side of the band and at least one second opening on a bottom side of band; wherein the at least one second component further comprises: a top piece connected to the top side of the band and forming at least a portion of a top side of the head and configured to cover the first opening; and a bottom piece connected to the bottom side of the metal band and forming at least a portion of a bottom side of the head and configured to cover the second opening.
2. The ball striking device of claim 1, wherein the first component comprises at least one weight member connected to the metal band.
3. The ball striking device of claim 1, wherein the at least one second component is formed from a carbon-fiber composite material.
4. The ball striking device of claim 1, wherein the top piece is formed from a carbon-fiber composite material.
5. The ball striking device of claim 1, wherein the bottom piece is formed form a carbon-fiber composite material.
6. The ball striking device of claim 1, wherein the metal band comprises a semi-circular shape to define the periphery of the head.
7. The ball striking device of claim 1, wherein the band comprises a recess configured to receive a weight inserted into the recess.
8. The ball striking device of claim 1, wherein the band further comprises a top ledge protruding from the top side of the band and into the first opening to define a gripping surface for the top piece.
9. The ball striking device of claim 8, wherein the band further comprises a bottom ledge protruding from the bottom side of the band and into the second opening to define a gripping surface for the bottom piece.
10. The ball striking device of claim 1, wherein the first opening comprises a larger area than an area of the bottom opening.
11. A ball striking device comprising: a head comprising: a structural first component comprising a metal material; and at least one non-structural second component comprising a non-metallic material; wherein: the structural first component and at least one non-structural second component are connected to define a hollow center cavity; wherein the structural first component further comprises: a face located at a front of the head and having a ball striking surface configured to strike a golf ball, a top return extending rearward from the face, and a bottom return extending rearward from the face; a band extending in a rearward direction from the face to define a periphery of the head; the band further comprising a first end connected to a first side of the face, a second end extending from a second side of the face, opposite the first side, and a rear portion disposed between the first and second ends; an arm extending across a bottom side of the head from the face to a central portion of the band; the rear portion of the band further comprising at least two screw bases configured to secure one of at least two screw weights to the band; wherein the rear portion of the band is positioned below a volumetric centerline of the head; the band and the face define a first opening on a top side of the band; the band, the face, and a first side of the arm define a second opening; the band, the face, and a second side of the arm, opposite the first side, define a third opening; wherein the at least one second component further comprises: a top piece connected to the top side of the band and forming at least a portion of a top side of the head and configured to cover the first opening; and a first bottom piece connected to a first portion of a bottom side of the band, forming a portion of the bottom side of the head, and configured to cover the second opening; a second bottom piece connected to a portion of the bottom side of the band, forming a portion of the bottom side of the head, and configured to cover the second opening; and wherein the first bottom piece and second bottom piece are separated by the arm.
12. The ball striking device of claim 11, wherein the at least one non-structural second component is formed from a carbon-fiber composite material.
13. The ball striking device of claim 11, wherein the at least two screw weights include a first screw weight comprising a first mass and a second screw weight comprising a second mass, different from the first mass.
14. The ball striking device of claim 11, wherein band further defines a recess configured to receive the at least two screw weights.
15. The ball striking device of claim 13, wherein the first screw weight and second screw weight are interchangeable within the at least two screw bases in order to control weight distribution of the head.
16. The ball striking device of claim 11, wherein the face further comprises jogs extending rearward from the face such that a top wall length measured rearward from the face is staggered from a bottom wall length measured rearward from the face.
17. The ball striking device of claim 16, wherein the top wall length is greater than the bottom wall length.
18. The ball striking device of claim 16, wherein the top wall length and bottom wall length range from 0.25 inch to 2.0 inch.
19. The ball striking device of claim 11, wherein the band and the top return define a first periphery of the first opening comprising a ledge protruding from the periphery and into the first opening to define a top gripping surface for the top piece.
20. The ball striking device of claim 19, wherein the bottom side of the side of the head comprises: a second ledge protruding from a periphery of the second opening defined by the first bottom portion of the band, a first portion of the bottom return, and the first side of the arm; and a third ledge protruding from a periphery of the third opening defined by the second bottom portion of the band, a second portion of the bottom return, and the second side of the arm; wherein the second ledge defines a second gripping surface for the first bottom piece and the third ledge defines a third gripping surface for the second bottom piece.

For example, the face is made of a first material, and at least some components of the head are made of another material. In one embodiment, some components of the head, including the face and a band extending around a portion of the head, are made of metal (including metal alloys), and other components of the head are made of non-metallic or substantially non-metallic materials. Additionally, the components may be formed by various forming methods. For example, metal components may be formed by forging, molding, casting, machining, and/or other known techniques. In another example, substantially non-metallic composite components, such as carbon fiber-polymer composites, can be manufactured by a variety of composite processing techniques, such as prepreg processing, powder-based techniques, mold infiltration, and/or other known techniques. In one embodiment, the metal components are formed by forging and are then polished and machined to the proper dimensions and finishes, and the composite components are formed by using prepregs.

[0068] The ball striking devices and heads therefor as described herein provide many benefits and advantages over existing products. One such advantage is that the materials and configurations used may be selected in order to strategically weight the head to result in more effective striking of the ball. For example, in a golf club head, it is often desired to have the weight of the head distributed near the bottom and around the outer periphery of the head. In one such embodiment, the non-metallic pieces can be made of a lighter material than the metal components, and as a result, the metal portions of the head will be proportionally heavier. Thus, the metal components can be designed so that they occupy portions of the head which are desirably heavier, allowing greater control over the weight distribution of the head. Accordingly, a head with better properties, such as higher moment of inertia, can be produced. The addition of weight members at desired locations in the club head can provide additional strategic weighting of the head. Thus, the head can be selectively weighted so as to increase weight in the toe, heel, high, or low areas of the head. This selective weighting helps bias the club to produce selected ball flight trajectories, such as draw biased clubs, fade biased clubs, high trajectory biased clubs, and low trajectory biased clubs. This feature can help the club compensate for swing flaws, e.g., which may tend to cause a slicing ball flight, a hooking ball flight, an excessively low ball flight, or a ballooning ball flight.
