Condiment Packet Holder

Abstract

A single-serving condiment packet holder that allows an opened packet to maintain an upright position without spilling its inner contents and also without having the opening of the open packet touch any part of the holder. The single-serving condiment packet holder has an opening to receive the packet and can have a thin three-dimensional cavity which is defined by one or more sidewalls. The holder may also have sidewalls, a base side, and a top side that is any geometric shape. A clip or hook may be used to suspend the holder.

Claims

1. A condiment packet holder, comprising: (a) a base side having a first edge, a second edge, a third edge, and a fourth edge, wherein the first edge is opposite to the second edge, the third edge is adjacent to the first and second edges, and the fourth edge is opposite to the third edge and adjacent to the first and second edges; (b) a first sidewall adjacent to the first edge of the base side and a second sidewall adjacent to the second edge of the base side; (c) a third sidewall adjacent to the third edge of the base side and a fourth sidewall adjacent to the fourth edge of the base side; (d) a top side having a first edge, a second edge, a third edge, and a fourth edge, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth edges of the top side are adjacent to the first, second, third, and fourth sidewalls, respectively; (e) a cavity, which is defined by one or more sidewalls, wherein the top side has an opening in fluid communication with the cavity and sized to hold one single-serving condiment packet; and (f) wherein the cavity has a width of approximately 5 mm to approximately 15 mm, a length of approximately at least 15 mm, and the cavity has a depth of approximately 15 mm to approximately 60 mm.

2. The condiment packet holder of claim 1, further comprising a trough extending from the base, the trough comprising a wall having a height that is shorter than any one of the first, second, third, or fourth sidewalls.

3. The condiment packet holder of claim 1, further comprising a clip moveably attached to one of the first, second, third, or fourth sidewalls or the base, wherein the clip is adjustable from a first position to a second position.

4. The condiment packet holder of claim 1, further comprising a lip extending from the base.

5. The condiment packet holder of claim 1, further comprising a high density area near the base.

6. The condiment packet holder of claim 1, wherein the base further comprises a traction surface.

7. The condiment packet holder of claim 1, wherein a portion of the first sidewall is recessed towards the second sidewall.

8. The condiment packet holder of claim 1, wherein the base comprises a flange.

9. A method of manufacturing a condiment packet holder, comprising: (a) forming a base side having a first edge, a second edge, a third edge, and a fourth edge, wherein the first edge is opposite to the second edge, the third edge is adjacent to the first and second edges, and the fourth edge is opposite to the third edge and adjacent to the first and second edges; (b) forming a first sidewall adjacent to the first edge of the base side and a second sidewall adjacent to the second edge of the base side; (c) forming a third sidewall adjacent to the third edge of the base side and a fourth sidewall adjacent to the fourth edge of the base side; (d) forming a top side having a first edge, a second edge, a third edge, and a fourth edge, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth edges of the top side are adjacent to the first, second, third, and fourth sidewalls, respectively; (e) forming a cavity surrounded by the first, second, third, and fourth sidewalls, wherein the top side has an opening in fluid communication with the cavity sized to hold one single-serving condiment packet; and (f) wherein the cavity has a width of approximately 5 mm to approximately 15 mm, a length of approximately at least 15 mm, and the cavity has a depth of approximately 15 mm to approximately 60 mm.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising a trough extending from the base, the trough comprising a wall having a height that is shorter than any one of the first, second, third, or fourth sidewall.

11. The method of claim 9, further comprising a clip moveably attached to one of the at least one sidewall or base, wherein the clip is adjustable from a first position to a second position.

12. The method of claim 9, further comprising a lip extending from the base.

13. The method of claim 9, further comprising a high density area near the base.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein the base further comprises a traction surface.

15. The method of claim 9, wherein a portion of the first sidewall is recessed towards the second sidewall.

16. A method of manufacturing a condiment packet holder, comprising: (a) forming a base side; (b) forming a top side connected to the base side; and (c) forming only one opening at the top side, wherein the opening is sized to hold one single-serving condiment packet; (d) wherein the opening has a width of approximately 5 mm to approximately 15 mm, and a length of approximately at least 15 mm.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising a clip moveably attached to the base side, wherein the clip is adjustable from a first position to a second position.

18. The method of claim 16, further comprising a lip extending from the base side.

The opening and the cavity dimensions are critically important to the invention because the holder 100 is designed to hold one, single-serving condiment packet. Since single-serving condiment packets come in different sizes, the dimensions of the opening and cavity can vary to accommodate the different packet sizes, but should remain small enough to hold one packet upright at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to approximately 90 degrees relative to the base. Preferably, when the condiment packet is placed in the holder, the angle made between the packet and the base of the holder is between 60 degrees to approximately 90 degrees. More preferably, the angle is between approximately 75 degrees and approximately 90 degrees, 80 degrees and approximately 90 degrees, 85 degrees and approximately 90 degrees, 95 degrees and approximately 90 degrees.

This embodiment would still carry the spirit of the “single” condiment packet holder in the sense that each three-dimensional cavity is only capable of holding a single condiment packet. Various sizes can be manufactured to cater to the different sized condiment packets, varying from the small pepper packets to the typical soy sauce and ketchup-type packets to the larger salad dressing packets, and everything in between. [0031] In some embodiments, the one or more of the sidewalls 112, 114, 116, 118 may have a lip 140 extending outwardly, and preferably, upwardly from, on, or near one of the edges 104, 106, 108, 110 of the base side 102. This lip 140 can be used to hold additional condiment packets resting on the lip 140 and leaning against the respective sidewall 112, 114, 116, or 118. This is particularly useful in embodiments in which the sidewalls 112, 114, 116, or 118 are non-perpendicular to the base side 102 or taper inwardly toward the top side 120. In addition, such an embodiment can be used by a single user with multiple different condiment packets. For example, a single user may have a ketchup packet, a mustard packet, and a relish packet. The trough 170 provides an area on the holder 100 in which the user can pour the contents of a condiment packet, and if some condiment remains in the packet, the user can place the condiment packet into the cavity 130 for later use. The trough 170 can be defined by a floor 172 that extends from the base 102 away from the cavity 130. One or more walls 174 can rise from the floor 172 to contain the condiment poured inside. The traction surface 160 allows the holder to better grip or stick to the surface upon which it rests. The traction surface 160 may be made of material that creates friction with hard surfaces. For example, the traction surface 160 may be made of rubber. The divot would be positioned so that when the protrusion is seated in one of the divots, the clip 150 is locked in the horizontal position, the vertical position, or some other desired position. The configuration of the locking mechanism 154 may be such that the weight of the holder 100 is insufficient to remove the protrusion out of the divot, but greater force would be able remove the protrusion from the divot. The arrangement of the divot and the protrusion can be reversed so that the divot is on the hinge 152 and the protrusion is on the holder 100. In some embodiments with a clip 150, the lip 140 may be on the sidewalls adjacent to or opposite the clip 150.

[0039] The clip 150 can be secured to the sidewalls 112, 114, 116, 118 or to the base 102 in a moveable manner in many different ways.
