Abstract
A shear nut 10, a lock nut 62 (together forming a nut arrangement 60 for a bolt 12), and a driver (110, 500, 600, 700) used while installing the nut arrangement 60. Particularly, the bolt 12 is a rock bolt. The shear nut 10 comprises first and second portions (14, 18) connected by a connecting portion 22. The second portion 18 comprises an engaging formation 20 configured to interact with the bolt 12 to limit the extent to which the second portion 18 operatively advances axially along the bolt 12. The first portion 14 has an internal thread. In use, the first and second portions (14, 18) are configured to become separated at the connecting portion 22, when the engaging formation 20 interacts with the bolt 12 and a predetermined moment is applied to the first portion 14.
Claims
1. A shear nut for use with a bolt, the shear nut comprising: a first portion having an internal thread configured to engage a first threaded portion of the bolt; a second portion comprising an engaging formation configured, in use, to interact with the bolt so as to limit the extent to which the second portion operatively advances axially along the bolt; and a connecting portion connecting the first portion and the second portion, wherein, in use, the first and second portions are configured to become separated at the connecting portion, when the engaging formation interacts with the bolt and a predetermined moment is applied to the first portion.
2. The shear nut according to claim 1, wherein the configuration is such that, when the engaging portion interacts with the bolt and the first and second portions are connected through the connecting portion, the shear nut is inhibited from being rotated relative to the bolt, and such that, once the first and second portions have become separated, the first portion is allowed to rotate relative to the bolt, allowing the internal thread to cause the first portion to be displaced axially relative to the bolt.
3. The shear nut according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the connecting portion comprises a shearing portion in the form of one of a frangible portion and a weakened portion formed between the first and second portions.
4. The shear nut according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the connecting portion has a wall thickness which is smaller than a wall thickness of the first and/or the second portions.
5. The shear nut according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the second portion comprises a substantially cylindrical body.
6. The shear nut according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the first, second and connecting portions are integrally formed and wherein the internal thread of the first portion extends through the connecting portion, and at least partially along a length of the second and portion.
7. The shear nut according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the first portion comprises an external gripping formation for facilitating interaction with a tool, and wherein the external gripping formation takes the form of one of a hexagonal and a square outer shape, so that the first portion is configured as a driving head.
8. The shear nut according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the engaging formation takes the form of a shoulder formed towards an operative trailing end of the second portion.
9. The shear nut according to claim 8, wherein the shoulder comprises a substantially disc-shaped formation, defining hole through a central portion thereof.
10. The shear nut according to claim 9, wherein a diameter of the hole is smaller than an outer diameter of the first threaded portion of the bolt.
11. The shear nut according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the internal thread of the first portion is configured in a first directional orientation.
12. The shear nut according to claim 1, wherein the first and second portions comprise separate bodies, and wherein the connecting portion comprises a shear pin extending between the first and second bodies.
13. The shear nut according to claim 12, wherein the first portion comprises a recess for receiving an operative leading end of the second portion and wherein the thread of the first portion and thread of the second portion are configured to align or be in phase when the first and second portions are interconnected by the pin.
14. A nut arrangement for use with a bolt, the nut arrangement comprising: a first portion comprising a first external gripping formation, a first inner diameter and an internal thread having a first directional orientation and which is configured to engage a first threaded portion of the bolt in use; and a second portion comprising a second gripping formation, the second portion being configurable in a locked configuration relative to the bolt, in use, wherein, when the second portion is configured in the locked configuration, rotation of the second portion relative to the bolt is inhibited, such that the second portion is utilised to create a counter-moment when applying a moment to the first portion.
15. A nut arrangement according to claim 14, wherein the second portion comprises a lock nut having a second inner diameter and an internal thread having a second directional orientation and which is configured to engage a second threaded portion of the bolt, wherein, in use, the first portion is at least partially threaded along the first threaded portion of the bolt by being rotated in a first direction, and the lock nut is threaded onto the second threaded portion of bolt by being rotated in a second direction, until further rotation of the lock nut is inhibited, thereby to configure the lock nut in the locked configuration.
16. A nut arrangement according to claim 15, wherein the first and second directional orientations are opposite directional orientations.
17. A nut arrangement according to any one of claims 14 to 16, wherein the first portion comprises a first nut.
18. A nut arrangement according to claim 17, wherein the first nut comprises a shear nut in accordance with any one of claims 1 to 13.
19. A nut arrangement according to claim 15, wherein the first inner diameter exceeds the second inner diameter and wherein the configuration is such that the first portion clears the second threaded portion of the bolt when advanced axially there over, without interference between the internal thread of the first portion and the second threaded portion of the bolt.
20. A nut arrangement according to any one of claims 14 to 19, wherein the second gripping portion comprises one of a second external gripping formation and an inner recess for facilitating interaction with a tool.
21. A nut arrangement according to claim 20, wherein the external gripping formation of the second portion has a one of a hexagonal and square outer shape or wherein the inner recess comprises an internal gripping formation having one of a hexagonal and square shape.
22. A nut arrangement according to any one of claims 14 to 21, wherein an outer dimension of the lock nut is smaller than an outer dimension of the first portion of the first nut.
23. A nut arrangement according to claim 15, wherein the lock nut comprises: an inner portion within which the second inner diameter is formed; an outer portion on which a second gripping formation is formed, the outer portion comprising an internal opening within which the inner portion is received in use; an interconnecting arrangement arranged to extend between the inner and outer portions for facilitating a transfer of a moment or torque from the outer portion to the inner portion, wherein the interconnecting arrangement is configured to shear when a predetermined moment is applied to the outer portion, whereafter the inner and outer portions are free to rotate relative to each other.
24. A nut arrangement according to claim 23, wherein the interconnecting arrangement comprises at least a first pin which, in use, extends through a first hole in the outer portion, into a first hole in the inner portion.
25. A nut arrangement according to claim 24, wherein the interconnecting arrangement comprises two or more pins.
26. A nut arrangement according to claim 14, further comprising a locking portion provided for interacting with the second portion, to configure the second portion in the locked configuration.
27. A nut arrangement according to claim 26, wherein the first and second portions are connected by a connecting portion and wherein, in use, the first and second portions are configured to become separated at the connecting portion, when the second portion is configured in the locked configuration and a predetermined moment is applied to the first portion.
28. A nut arrangement according to claim 26 or 27, wherein the second portion has an internal thread in the first directional orientation configured to engage the first threaded portion of the bolt.
29. A nut arrangement according to any one of claims 26 to 28, wherein the locking portion comprises a ring portion with an engaging surface provided for interacting with the bolt to inhibit relative rotation between the ring portion and the bolt.
30. A nut arrangement according to any one of claims 26 to 29, wherein, in use a connection arrangement is provided between the locking portion and the second portion to configure the second portion in the locked configuration.
31. A nut arrangement according to claim 30, wherein the connection arrangement comprises at least one pin, in use, extending between the locking portion and the second portion, the pin inhibiting rotation of the second portion relative to the locking portion.
32. A nut arrangement according to claim 29, wherein the engaging surface is formed by an inner surface of a non-circular hole extending at least partially through the ring portion, which non-circular hole, in use, receives a non-circular portion of the bolt.
33. A nut arrangement according to any one of claims 14 to 32, comprising a load indicator having a contact portion, connected to the first portion via a second connection arrangement, which is configured to collapse when a predetermined axial force is applied thereto.
34. A bolt having a first end region comprising: a first body portion, having a first diameter and a first threaded portion having a first directional orientation, the first threaded portion formed towards a first end of the first body portion; a second body portion which extends axially away from the first end of the first body portion and having a cross-sectional dimension which is smaller than the first diameter.
35. A bolt according to claim 34, wherein a shoulder or step formation is formed at a transition between the first and second body portions.
36. A bolt according to claim 34 or 35, wherein the second body portion has a second diameter which is smaller than the first diameter and comprises a second threaded portion having a second directional orientation.
37. A bolt according to claim 34 or 35, wherein the second body portion is non-circular in cross-section.
38. A bolt according to claim 37, wherein the second body portion includes at least a first cut-out which defines a first substantially planar surface.
39. A bolt according to claim 38, wherein the second body portion includes a second cut-out which defines a second substantially planar surface, and wherein the first and second substantially planar surfaces extend substantially parallel to each other.
40. A bolt according to any one of claims 34 to 39, further comprising a main body extending away from the first end region towards a second end.
41. A method of installing a rock bolt, the method including the steps of: creating a hole extending into a rock body; inserting a bolt into the hole, so that at least a part of a first end region of the bolt protrudes out of the hole and beyond a face of the rock body; arranging a first portion of a nut arrangement at least partially on a first body portion of the first end region of the bolt; configuring a second portion of the nut arrangement in a locked configuration; exerting a tightening moment on the first portion; and exerting a counter-moment on the second portion.
42. A method of installing a rock bolt according to claim 41, including the further step of fixing the rock bolt within the hole.
43. A method of installing a rock bolt according to claim 42, wherein the step of fixing the rock bolt within the hole comprises the steps of: providing a resin within the hole; exerting a setting moment below a predetermined moment on the first portion, which first portion comprises a first portion of one of a shear nut in accordance with claim 1 and a nut arrangement in accordance with claim 14; and exerting a shearing moment on the first portion which exceeds the predetermined moment, to cause a first portion of the shear nut to become separated from the second portion.
44. A method of installing a rock bolt according to claim 43, wherein the setting moment causes the rock bolt to rotate relative to the hole, and wherein the rotation of the rock bolt relative to the hole causes the resin, which is a two-part resin, to become mixed.
45. The method of installing a rock bolt according to claim 44, wherein the mixing of the resin causes the resin to become set, inhibiting further rotation of the rock bolt.
46. The method of installing a rock bolt according to any one of claims 43 to 45, wherein the resin is injected into the hole before inserting the bolt into the hole.
47. The method of installing a rock bolt according to any one of claims 43 to 45, wherein the bolt comprises an internal channel for conveying the resin, and wherein the method comprises the step of injecting the resin through the channel, into the hole, after the bolt has been inserted into the hole.
48. The method of installing a rock bolt according to any one of claims 41 to 47, wherein the tightening moment and the counter-moment are opposite moments, so that a nett moment exerted on the roof bolt is smaller than the larger one of the tightening and counter-moments.
49. The method of installing a rock bolt according to claim 48, wherein the nett moment approaches zero.
50. A driver apparatus, comprising: an input formation through which an input moment or torque is supplied in use; a first engagement formation provided for operatively engaging with a first object, the first engagement formation configured to transmit a first output moment in a first direction to the first object; and a second engagement formation provided for operatively engaging with a second object, the second engagement formation configured to transmit a second output moment in a second direction to the second object, wherein the first and second engagement formations are aligned axially on a common central axis and spaced axially.
51. A driver apparatus according to claim 50, wherein the first and second engagement formations face in the same direction.
52. A driver apparatus according to claim 50 or 51, wherein the first engagement formation is fixed to or formed towards a first end of a first drive body, and the second engagement formation is fixed to or formed towards a first end of a second drive body, and wherein the first and second drive bodies are arranged operatively to rotate relative to each other about the common central axis, in opposite angular directions.
53. A driver apparatus according to claim 52, wherein the first drive body comprises a hollow, substantially cylindrical structure and wherein the first engagement formation constitutes a first socket which is open ended on two opposing sides thereof and within which the first object is at least partially received in use.
54. A driver apparatus according to claim 53 wherein the first socket has one of a hexagonal and square cross-sectional shape.
55. A driver apparatus according to any one of claims 52 to 54, wherein the second engagement formation is arranged, at least partially within the first drive body.
56. A driver apparatus according to any one of claims 52 to 55, wherein the second engagement formation constitutes one of: a second socket within which the second object is at least partially received in use; an Allen key for engaging with a head of the second object; and a driving head.
57. A driver apparatus according to claim 56, wherein the second socket has one of a hexagonal and square cross-section.
58. A driver apparatus according to any one of claims 52 to 57, wherein a size of the cross-section of the first engagement formation exceeds a size of the cross-section of the second engagement formation.
59. A driver apparatus according to any one of claims 53 to 58, wherein the arrangement is such that the second object is, in use, received through the first engagement formation, and brought into engagement with the second engagement formation.
60. A driver apparatus according to any one of claims 52 to 59, wherein the second drive body constitutes a central shaft, wherein the second engagement formation is located towards a first end of the central shaft and wherein the central shaft extends from the second engagement formation, in a direction away from the first engagement formation.
61. A driver apparatus according to any one of claims 50 to 60, wherein the input formation is fixed to, or formed integrally with, an input shaft, which is axially aligned with the first and second engagement formations.
62. A driver apparatus according to any one of claims 50 to 61, wherein the input formation takes the form of one of a socket and a driving head.
63. A driver apparatus according to any one of claims 50 to 62, further comprising a retaining mechanism configured releasably to retain the driver apparatus relative to one of the first and second objects in use.
64. A driver apparatus according to claim 63, wherein the retaining mechanism comprises a latch body which is received within a slot formed in the first drive body, which latch body is displaceable within the slot between a latched and unlatched configuration.
65. A driver apparatus according to claim 64, wherein the latch body comprises two prongs, each associated with a separate slot formed in the first drive body.
66. A driver apparatus according to claim 64 or 65, wherein the retaining mechanism comprises a handle for displacing the latch body between the latched and unlatched configurations.
67. A driver apparatus according to any one of claims 50 to 66, wherein internal gear ratios of the driver assembly are selected to facilitate a torque multiplication between the input formation and at least one of the first and second engagement formations in use.
68. A driver apparatus according to any one of claims 50 to 67, wherein the first engagement formation is associated with a first drive arrangement, the second engagement is associated with a second drive arrangement, and the input formation is associated with an input drive arrangement, and wherein the first and second drive arrangements are driven by the input drive arrangement, so that interaction between the first, second and input drive arrangements causes the first and second engagement formations operatively to be driven in opposite directions.
69. A driver apparatus according to any one of claims 50 to 68, further comprising at least a first carrier body and at least a first side shaft, which is carried or supported by the carrier body and arranged spaced from and parallel to the central axis, the first side shaft arranged to be driven, in use, directly or indirectly through the input formation.
70. A driver apparatus according to claim 69, wherein a moment is exerted on the first carrier body about the central axis, by the at least first side shaft when same is driven through the input formation.
71. A driver apparatus according to claim 69 or 70, further comprising at least a first planetary gear arrangement.
72. A driver apparatus according to claim 71, wherein the first planetary gear arrangement comprises a first sun gear, and at least a first planet gear carried by a first planet carrier body, the arrangement such that, in use, the first planet carrier body rotates relative to the first sun gear to cause the at least first planet gear to revolve around the first sun gear.
73. A driver apparatus according to claim 72, wherein the first planetary gear arrangement comprises at least two planet gears carried or supported equidistantly about the sun gear on a pitch circle diameter by the first planet carrier body.
74. A driver apparatus according to claim 72 or 73, wherein the first planetary gear arrangement includes an outer ring gear.
75. A driver assembly according to claim 74, wherein the first engagement formation is connected to the first planet carrier through a first connecting body and/or a first drive body, and wherein the first engagement formation is connected to and driven by the first planet carrier body.
76. A driver assembly according to claim 75, wherein the second engagement formation is connected to the outer ring gear through a second connecting body and/or a second drive body, and wherein the second engagement formation is driven by the outer ring gear.
77. A driver assembly according to claim 76, wherein: the second connecting body constitutes the carrier body carrying or supporting the side shaft; the side shaft is associated with a first and second side shaft gear; the first side shaft gear is driven by the input formation via an input gear; and a central gear, connected to the sun gear via a third connecting body, is driven by the second side shaft gear.
78. A driver apparatus according to claim 74, wherein: the first planet carrier constitutes the first carrier body; the first planet gear is arranged on the first side shaft; the input formation is fixed to the first carrier body to drive the first carrier body; the ring gear drives the first engagement formation in use; and the sun gear drives the second engagement formation in use.
79. A driver apparatus according to any one of claims 71 to 73, comprising a second planetary gear arrangement comprising a second sun gear, and a second planet gear carried by a second planet carrier body, the arrangement such that, in use, the second planet carrier rotates relative to the second sun gear to cause the second planet gear to revolve around the second sun gear.

A driver apparatus according to claim 79, wherein the first planet carrier constitutes the first carrier body; the first side shaft extends between the first and second planet carriers, such that the first and second planet carriers rotate together; and the first planet gear of the first planet gear arrangement and the second planet gear of the second planet gear arrangement are both arranged on the first side shaft, and rotate together.
81. A driver apparatus according to claim 80, wherein: the input formation drives the first sun gear; the first engagement formation is connected to and driven by the second planet carrier; and the second engagement formation is driven by the second sun gear.
82. A driver apparatus according to claim 69 or 70, further comprising a first transfer arrangement comprising a first transfer member and a second transfer member, and a second transfer arrangement comprising a third transfer member and a fourth transfer member, wherein the second and third transfer members are fixed to the side shaft.
83. A driver apparatus according to claim 82, wherein the side shaft is associated with a second carrier body which rotates with the first carrier body, and wherein the first engagement formation is connected to and driven by the second carrier body.
84. A driver apparatus according to claim 82 or 83, wherein the first drive member is operatively driven by or via the input formation.
85. A driver apparatus according to any one of claims 82 to 84, wherein the second engagement formation is connected to and driven by the fourth transfer member.
86. A driver apparatus according to any one of claims 82 to 85, wherein the first and second transfer members comprise one of: i) first and second sprockets connected by a chain; ii) first and second pulleys connected by a belt; and iii) first and second gears provided in mesh.
87. A driver apparatus according to any one of claims 82 to 86, wherein the third and fourth transfer members comprise one of: i) first and second gears provided in mesh; ii) first and second sprockets connected by a chain; iii) first and second pulleys connected by a belt.
88. A driver apparatus according to claim 82, comprising a second side shaft and a third transfer arrangement comprising a fifth and sixth transfer member, and wherein the fourth and fifth transfer members are associated with and fixed to the second side shaft, and further wherein the second engagement formation is connected to and driven by the sixth transfer member.
89. A nut arrangement according to claim 14, wherein the second portion is separate from the first portion, and wherein the second portion comprises a protruding portion with an external thread having a second directional orientation, which protruding portion is configured for being received in a blind centre opening of the bolt.
90. A nut arrangement according to claim 89, wherein the second portion is configured in the locked configuration when, in use, interaction with the bolt inhibits the second portion from advancing further along a length of the bolt.
91. A nut arrangement in accordance with claim 89 or 90, wherein the first and second portions are, in use, interconnected by at least a first shear pin.
92. A bolt having a first end region comprising: a first body portion, having a first diameter and a first threaded portion having a first directional orientation, the first threaded portion formed towards a first end of the first body portion; and an internal blind hole defining a second diameter, and comprising an internal thread having a second directional orientation.
93. A bolt according to claim 92, wherein the bolt comprises a cable bolt, and wherein the internal blind hole is created by pushing a king strand or wire axially deeper into the body of the cable.
94. A bolt according to claim 92 or 93, wherein an inner surface of the internal blind hole is welded before the internal thread is formed.
95. A bolt according to claim 40, wherein the main body comprises a cable, and wherein the first and a second end region is reinforced by welding.
96. A bolt according to claim 95, wherein the first and second end regions are reinforced by welding, by: pulling a king wire or strand of the cable axially from the cable, such that a length of the king wire is exposed; cutting a portion of the king wire to shorten the king wire; pushing the king wire axially back into position within the cable, such that the king wire is substantially centred axially within the cable; and welding inner surfaces of the openings formed at the ends thereby to reinforce the strands of the cable.

[0143] The internal thread 16 of the first portion 14 interacts with a first threaded portion 24 of the rock bolt 12. The inner diameter 17 of the first portion 14 therefore corresponds to the outer diameter of the first threaded portion 24. In use, the shear nut 10 is provided on a first end region 26 of the rock bolt 12, by screwing the internal thread 16 of the first portion 14 onto the first threaded portion 24 of the rock bolt. The shear nut 10 is advanced onto the first end region 26 until the interaction between the rock bolt 12 and the engagement formation 20 inhibits further advancement of the shear nut 10 along the length of the rock bolt 12. The shear nut 10 is configured such that, when the further advancement is inhibited as mentioned, and a moment exceeding a predetermined amount, is applied to the first portion 14, the first and second portions (14, 18) are caused to become separated at the connecting portion 22. Here it will be understood that, in order for the moment to exceed the predetermined amount or size, rotation of the rock bolt 12 relative to the rock body 28 within which the bolt is installed, needs to be inhibited or resisted (at least partially). Effectively, a counter-moment is therefore created between the rock body 28 and the rock bolt 12. This is discussed in greater detail below.

Furthermore, in cases where the nut arrangement 60 is used with the rock bolt 12, it will be appreciated that the lock nut may be tightened into the locked position before the shearing moment is applied, and that the lock nut may be used to provide a counter moment to counteract the shearing moment.
