Abstract
A bicycle chain ring having a plurality of teeth extending radially about an axis of the chain ring, the plurality of teeth including a first group of teeth and a second group of teeth. The first group of teeth has a first width at a tooth base that is sized to be received within a chain cavity defined between parallel links of a bicycle chain. The second group of teeth has a second width at the tooth base, the second width being different from the first width. Further, the first group of teeth have a tooth tip that is substantially centered on a plane defined between an inner surface and an outer surface of the chain ring and the second group of teeth is at least partially offset from the plane.
Claims
1. A bicycle chain ring, comprising: a plurality of teeth extending radially about an axis of the chain ring, the plurality of teeth including a first group of teeth and a second group of teeth; wherein the first group of teeth has a first width at a tooth base that is sized to be received within a chain cavity defined between parallel links of a bicycle chain; wherein the second group of teeth has a second width at the tooth base, the second width being different from the first width; wherein, the first group of teeth have a base that is sized to be substantially centered on a central plane defined through a center portion of the chainring; wherein, the second group of teeth have a base that is at least partially offset from the central plane.
2. The bicycle chain ring of claim 1, further wherein the second width is less than the first width.
3. The bicycle chain ring of claim 1, further comprising a third group of teeth having a third width that is different from the first width.
4. The bicycle chain ring of claim 3, further wherein the third width is less than the first width.
5. The bicycle chain ring of claim 3, wherein second group of teeth is offset to an inward side of the central plane and the third group of teeth is offset to an outward side of the central plane.
6. The bicycle chain ring of claim 1, further wherein the first width is about the width of the space between two outer chain links of a bicycle chain.
7. The bicycle chain ring of claim 6, further wherein the second width is less than the width of the space between two inner chain links of a bicycle chain.
8. The bicycle chain ring of claim 5, comprising a series of teeth that is a first tooth from the first group of teeth followed by a second tooth from the second group of teeth followed by a third tooth from the third group of teeth.
9. The bicycle chain ring of claim 8, wherein the series of teeth continues around the entire circumference of the chain ring.
10. The bicycle chain ring of claim 5, comprising a sequence of teeth around the chain ring that is a first tooth from the first group of teeth followed by a second tooth from the second group of teeth followed by a third tooth from the first group of teeth.
11. The bicycle chain ring of claim 10, wherein the third tooth is followed by a fourth tooth from the second group of teeth followed by a fifth tooth from the third group of teeth followed by a sixth tooth from the second group of teeth followed by a seventh tooth from the first group of teeth.
12. A bicycle chain ring, comprising: a plurality of teeth extending radially about an axis of the chain ring, the plurality of teeth including a first group of teeth and a second group of teeth; wherein the first group of teeth has a first width at a tooth base that is sized to be received within a chain cavity defined between parallel links of a bicycle chain; wherein the second group of teeth has a second width at the tooth base, the second width being different from the first width; wherein, the first group of teeth have a width sized to substantially span an inner link gap of a chain and the second group of teeth have a width sized to substantially span an outer link gap of the chain.
13. The bicycle chain ring of claim 12, further comprising a third group having at least one tooth with an offset to one side of the outer link width.
14. The bicycle chain ring of claim 12, wherein the chain ring has a tooth pattern about a periphery that alternates between a tooth from the first group and a tooth from the second group.
15. The bicycle chain ring of claim 12, wherein the chain ring has a tooth pattern about a periphery that is a tooth from the first group followed by a tooth from the second group, followed by an offset wider tooth that is offset along the outer link gap.
16. The bicycle chain ring of claim 12, wherein the chain ring has a tooth pattern about a periphery that is a tooth from the first group followed by a tooth from the second group, followed by another tooth from the first group followed by another tooth from the second group followed by an offset wider tooth that is offset along the outer link gap.
17. The bicycle chain ring of claim 16, further wherein the tooth pattern repeats around the periphery of the chain ring.
18. The bicycle chain ring of claim 12, further wherein at least one tooth of the chain ring has a modified leading end compared to a trailing end.
19. The bicycle chain ring of claim 12, wherein the first width is about 91% of the size of an inner chain link gap defined by the chain cavity.
20. The bicycle chain ring of claim 12, wherein the second with is about 96% of the size of an outer chain link gap defined by a second chain cavity.

Further, the offset wider right teeth 502 may provide at least a slightly spaced portion in the cavity 310 of the chain when properly positioned therein. In this configuration, a portion of the offset wider right teeth 502 may contact or otherwise be positioned adjacent to the inner side surface 1610 of the chain when positioned thereon but be at least slightly spaced from an inner surface 1608 of the chain. This allows the side surface 1610 of the offset wider right 502 teeth to maintain the proper aligning of the chain while providing a gap on the inner surface 1608 to allow debris and the like to be cleaned from the cavity 308, 310 of the chain.

The offset wider teeth may provide some additional security to the chain's retention on the ring.
