Abstract
An improved fiber-optic gyroscope (FOG) is proposed for enhancing the optical measurement sensitivity through the application of a heterodyne effect. The improved FOG is characterized by the use of a dual-injection polarization-maintaining 3×3 directional coupler which is configured to receive a pair of source light beams that are injected thereinto in a bi-directional manner. The forward-injected light beam is used to be split into a pair of interrogating beams for use by a coiled optical fiber to implement the detection and measurement of the Sagnac effect due to a rotational movement. On the other hand, the backward-injected light beam is used to be mixed with the paired interrogating beams that have passed through and returned from the coiled optical fiber to thereby provide a heterodyne effect that can boost the differential optical power amplitude of the paired interrogating beams, thereby enhancing the optical measurement sensitivity of the FOG application.
Claims
1. A fiber-optic gyroscope, comprising: (a) a light source for generating a pair of source light beams of the same frequency, including a first source light beam and a second source light beam, which are both linearly-polarized and originally aligned in phase and oriented in same polarity with respect to each other; (b) a dual-injection polarization-maintaining 3×3 directional coupler comprising: a main waveguide having a front port for receiving the first source light beam and a rear port for simultaneously receiving the second source light beam; and a pair of branching waveguides arranged in parallel alongside the main waveguide; wherein the first source light beam propagating through the main waveguide is split into a pair of interrogating beams which propagate respectively through the paired branching waveguides; and wherein the main waveguide and the paired branching waveguides are arranged and configured to operate in a polarization-maintaining mode that allows the split pair of interrogating beams to maintain the same polarity as the first source light beam and the second source light beam; (c) a coiled optical fiber of a polarization-maintaining type, which is arranged and configured to receive the paired interrogating beams from the dual-injection polarization-maintaining 3×3 directional coupler for observation and measurement of Sagnac effect due to a rotational movement about a referenced axis, where the paired interrogating beams after exiting from the coiled optical fiber are transferred back to the dual-injection polarization-maintaining 3×3 directional coupler; and (d) an optical signal processing unit for receiving and optically sensing the paired interrogating beams that have passed through the coiled optical fiber and the dual-injection polarization-maintaining 3×3 directional coupler to thereby generate an output signal that indicates the angle and speed of the rotational movement about the referenced axis; wherein the second source light beam is injected into the rear port of the main waveguide such that the second source light beam is mixed with the paired interrogating beams that have passed through and returned from the coiled optical fiber and are passing through the paired branching waveguides to thereby provide a heterodyne effect for boosting the differential optical power amplitude of the paired interrogating beams to achieve enhanced optical measurement sensitivity.
2. The fiber-optic gyroscope as recited in claim 1, wherein the dual-injection polarization-maintaining 3×3 directional coupler is implemented with three optical fibers which are bundled and cross-sectionally arranged in a linear formation.
3. The fiber-optic gyroscope as recited in claim 1, wherein the dual-injection polarization-maintaining 3×3 directional coupler is implemented with three optical fibers which are bundled and cross-sectionally arranged in a triangular formation.
4. The fiber-optic gyroscope as recited in claim 1, wherein the dual-injection polarization-maintaining 3×3 directional coupler is implemented with a planar photonic integrated circuit on which three waveguiding structures are formed and arranged cross-sectionally in a linear formation, wherein the center-positioned one of the three waveguiding structures serves as the main waveguide with the other two serving as the paired branching waveguides.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
[0023] A new and improved fiber-optic gyro (FOG) designed in accordance with the invention is disclosed and described in details in the following with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Application of FOG of Present Invention

[0025] In operation, the FOG 10 of the invention is functionally similar to conventional FOGs, which is likewise used to detect the angle and speed of the rotational movement of a moving object, such as a car or an airplane, with respect to the surrounding environment. However, the FOG 10 of the invention differs from the conventional FOGs particularly in that the FOG 10 of the invention can provide a significantly higher level of optical measurement sensitivity than the conventional FOGs through the application of a heterodyne effect.

The optical signal processing unit 400 detects and compares the paired interrogating beams (LX1″, LX2″) to thereby generate a signal S.sub.X that indicates the angle and speed of the rotational movement about the referenced X-axis.

In this way, the gain factor (1+M) can be tailored to the maximum possible value by judiciously choosing a minimum possible value for δ and a maximum possible value for η.sub.b.
