Abstract

Provided is a ceramic shelf assembly for aiding formation of a butt weld of adjacent metal plates in a groove formed between adjoining plates. The assembly has at least one ceramic block having at least one straight edge. The assembly further provides an apparatus for removably attaching the rear side of the ceramic block to a front surface of one of the adjacent metal plates along an edge of the groove.

Claims

1. A ceramic shelf assembly for aiding formation of a butt weld of adjacent metal plates in a groove formed between the plates, comprising: a) at least one ceramic block having a straight edge; and b) apparatus for removably attaching a rear side of said ceramic block to a front surface of one of said adjacent metal plates along an edge of said groove.

2. A ceramic shelf assembly as recited in claim 1 wherein said ceramic block is rectilinear in shape.

3. A ceramic shelf assembly as recited in claim 1 wherein said apparatus includes a length of double-sided heat-resistant tape disposed between said at least one ceramic block and said front surface.

4. A ceramic shelf assembly as recited in claim 1 wherein said apparatus includes a length of single-sided heat-resistant tape disposed on a front side of said at least one ceramic block and being wide enough to secure said at least one ceramic block to said front surface of said first metal plate.

5. A ceramic shelf assembly as recited in claim 1 wherein said apparatus includes at least one magnet disposed in a recess in said at least one ceramic block.

6. A ceramic shelf assembly as recited in claim 1 further comprising a plurality of ceramic blocks disposed end to end along said edge of said groove.

7. A ceramic shelf assembly as recited in claim 1 wherein said formation of a butt weld is carried out by a method selected from the group consisting of arc, heliarc, and oxyacetylene.

8. A method for preventing spillage of molten welding material from a welding grove onto the front surface of a first metal plate being butt-welded to a second metal plate, comprising the steps of: a) before beginning of welding, forming a corner on the end of said front surface of said first metal plate; b) providing at least one ceramic block and apparatus for removably attaching a back face of said ceramic block to said front surface; c) removably attaching said at least one ceramic block to said front surface along said corner; d) filling said welding groove with molten welding material up to said corner; and e) removing said ceramic block from said front surface.

9. A method as recited in claim 8 wherein said apparatus includes a double-sided heat resistant tape.

10. A method as recited in claim 8 wherein said apparatus includes a magnet disposed within a recess in said at least one ceramic block.

11. A method as recited in claim 8 wherein said welding method is selected from the group consisting of arc, heliarc, and oxyacetylene.

Description

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0012] The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

[0013] FIG. 1 is an elevational cross-sectional view from the side of a welded joint between two vertically oriented metal plates in accordance with the prior art;

[0014] FIG. 2 is an elevational cross-sectional view from the side of a welded joint between two vertically oriented metal plates showing use of a ceramic shelf assembly in accordance with the present invention;

[0015] FIG. 3 is an isometric view from the rear of a first embodiment of a ceramic shelf assembly comprising a plurality of ceramic blocks having a heat resistant tape for attaching the assembly to a metal surface; and

[0016] FIG. 4 is an isometric view from the rear of a second embodiment of a ceramic shelf assembly comprising a plurality of ceramic blocks having included magnets for attaching the assembly to a ferromagnetic surface.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0017] Throughout the following description, specific elements are set forth in order to provide a more thorough understanding of the invention. However, in some embodiments the invention may be practiced without some of these elements. In other instances, well known elements have not been shown or described in detail to avoid unnecessarily obscuring the disclosure. Accordingly, the specification and drawings are to be regarded as illustrative rather than restrictive. It is to be further noted that the drawings may not be to scale.

[0018] Referring now to FIG. 1, in a prior art welding assembly A, a first metal plate 10, having a back side 12 and a front side 14, and a second metal plate 16, having a back side 18 and a front side 20, are positioned vertically for being joined as by thermal welding as disclosed hereinabove. The metal may be, for example, steel, stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, metal alloys, or the like. First plate 10 has a face 22 chamfered or beveled at an angle from the horizontal of, for example, 45 degrees. Second plate 16 has a face 24 preferably orthogonal to back and front sides 18,20, creating an asymmetric V-shaped groove 26 between first and second plates 10,16 to be filled with molten welding material 28 in known fashion.

[0019] As shown in prior art FIG. 1, in forming a proper weld between faces 22 and 24, molten weld material may spill from groove 26 over the edge of face 24 under gravity and form an undesirable and unacceptable drip 30 on plate face 20 which then must be ground off.

[0020] It is the primary object of the present invention to prevent drip 30 from occurring.

[0021] Referring to FIGS. 2 and 3, the arrangement and configuration B of first and second plates 10,16 is the same as shown in prior art FIG. 1. In addition, first embodiment 1 of a ceramic shelf assembly in accordance with the present invention is shown attached to plate face 20. Assembly 1 comprises a ceramic block 34, which may be one of a plurality of ceramic blocks 34a,34b,34c as shown in FIG. 3, and a first heat resistant tape 36 disposed between ceramic block 34 and plate face 20. Preferably but not necessarily, ceramic blocks 34a,34b,34c are rectilinear in shape. Face 38 forms a ceramic shelf coplanar with face 24. Shelf 38 acts to prevent formation of a drip 30 as shown in FIG. 1 when the novel ceramic shelf assembly is absent. When weld 28 is completed and the workpiece has cooled, ceramic block 34 and tape 36 may be removed, leaving a smooth transition between the weld and the base metal with no drip 30 at the corner of face 24.

[0022] Referring now to FIG. 4, a second embodiment 2 of a ceramic shelf assembly in accordance with the present invention is shown. Instead of tape 36 being used to attach the ceramic blocks to plate face 20 as in embodiment 1, heat resistant magnets 136a,136b,136c are disposed in recesses 135 of respective ceramic blocks 134a,134b,134c flush with back surfaces 140a,140b,140c.

[0023] While the invention has been described by reference to various specific embodiments, it should be understood that numerous changes may be made within the spirit and scope of the inventive concepts described. Accordingly, it is intended that the invention is not limited to the described embodiments but will have full scope defined by the language of the following claims.
