Abstract
A collar for use on a water filtration tank adapter. The collar is formed as a ring adapted to thread onto the tank connection end of the adapter and abut the nut portion between the tank connection end and the pipe end of adapter. An o-ring, square in cross-section, is disposed on a top surface of the collar, offset medially towards the center. This top o-ring is adapted to abut the nut portion of the adapter. Another o-ring, square in cross-section, is disposed on the bottom surface, offset medially away from the center. This bottom o-ring is adapted to abut the tank head upon use. Accordingly, a water-tight seal is formed at the tank connection end and tank head, the collar functioning as both a positive stop and as a substitute for pipe tape.
Claims
1. A collar, comprising: an inner surface, an outer surface, a top surface and a bottom surface; said top surface having defined therein a top channel; a top o-ring for disposition within said top channel; said top channel offset medially towards said inner surface; said bottom surface having defined therein a bottom channel; wherein said outer surface is angled outwardly to extend said top surface, thereby forming a band surface; an upper band disposed on said band surface, said upper band having an upper band outer surface which is knurled to act as a hand grip; said bottom channel offset medially towards said outer surface, and, a bottom o-ring for disposition within said bottom channel.
2. The collar of claim 1, wherein said upper band inner surface is shaped to conform to a nut portion separating a pipe connection end and a tank connection end of a filtration system.

[0027] The top channel 12 and therefore the top o-ring 13 is offset medially towards the center. “Offset medially towards the center” means the top o-ring 13 is not in the middle of the collar 1, but is situated towards the inner surface 7 of the collar 1 and therefore has an inner diameter which is closer in measurement to the inner diameter of the collar 1 than the outer diameter of the collar 1. The bottom o-ring 13a is disposed on the bottom surface 10, offset medially away from the center. “Offset medially away from center” means this bottom o-ring 13a is not in the middle of the collar 1 but instead is situated towards the outer surface 8 of the collar 1 and therefore has an inner diameter which is closer in measurement to the outer diameter of the collar 1 than the inner diameter of the collar 1. Thus, the bottom o-ring 13a and the top o-ring 13 are concentric upon assemblage but have different diameters. The offset positioning of the o-rings 13, 13a is important because when these are being applied to a tapered thread engagement the O-rings 13, 13a need to be offset to allow proper sealing surface when the positive stop is employed and even without tapering, the hexagonal nut portion may not extend far past the main tank head so the two rings 13, 13a would not aligned upon assemblage. As an example only but by no means meant to be limiting, in an exemplary embodiment, with an inner diameter of the collar 1 at 1.325″: (1) the inner diameter of the top o-ring 13 is 1.375″; (2) the outer diameter of the top o-ring 13 is 1.595″; (3) the inner diameter of the bottom o-ring 13a is 1.487″; (4) the outer diameter of the bottom o-ring 13a is 1.707″.

[0029] In use, the collar 1 is threaded onto tank connection end 4 of adapter 2. Top o-ring 13 forms a water-tight seal between nut portion 11 and the collar 1. The adapter 2 and collar 1 combination is then hand-tightened onto main tank head, the bottom surface 10 of the collar 1 with bottom o-ring 13a now abutting the main tank head 5 while forming a water tight seal between tank head 5 and collar 1. Accordingly, a water-tight seal is formed at the tank connection end 4 and tank head 5, the collar 1 with o-ring combination 13, 13a functioning as both a positive stop and as a substitute for pipe tape.
