Abstract
A convertible seating system for a marine vessel includes a frame and a seat mounted on the frame and defining a first support surface. A backrest is configured for movement relative to the seat and the frame between a first position and a second position. In the second position, the backrest defines a second support surface lying generally parallel and vertically displaced relative to the first support surface.
Claims
1. A seating system for supporting an occupant of a marine vessel, the seating system comprising: a seat having a first support surface that underlies and supports the occupant while seated and facing in a first direction; a frame supporting the seat with respect to the marine vessel, the frame defining a storage space beneath the seat; a backrest having a second support surface, the backrest being pivotable relative to the seat and the frame into and between a fixed backrest position in which the second support surface is above the first support surface and provides back support for the occupant while seated and facing in the first direction, and a fixed seating position in which the second support surface underlies and supports the occupant while seated and facing in a second direction that is opposite the first direction, wherein when the backrest is in the fixed seating position, a portion of the seat is above the second support surface and provides a supplementary backrest for the occupant while seated and facing in the second direction; a pivot arm that couples the backrest to the frame so that the backrest is pivotable into and between the fixed backrest and seating positions, wherein movement of the backrest into and out of the fixed seating position moves the pivot arm into and out of the storage space; and a retaining arrangement that locks the backrest in the fixed backrest position, wherein the retaining arrangement is operable to enable the backrest to be moved out of the fixed backrest position and into the fixed seating position.
2. The seating system according to claim 1, wherein the frame is configured to support the seat above a deck of the marine vessel so that an occupant standing on a deck of the marine vessel can lean against a side surface of the seat for support.

The seating system according to claim 2, further comprising a bolster that is coupled to the seat on an opposite side of the seat relative to the backrest, the bolster being pivotable into a first position in which the bolster lies flush with the first support surface and a second position in which the bolster is on top of the first support surface so that the occupant standing on the deck of the marine vessel can lean against both the side surface of the seat and the bolster.

The seating system according to claim 2, wherein the frame comprises front and rear legs that extend downwardly from the seat and are spaced apart from each other, wherein the storage space is in between the front and rear legs, and wherein the pivot arm extends into and out of the storage space upon movement of the backrest into and out of the fixed seating position.

The seating system according to claim 1, wherein the pivot arm is an elongated member and has a first end coupled by a pivot connection to the frame, a second end that is opposite the first end and is fixed to the backrest, and a curved contour extending between the first and second ends, wherein the curved contour moves into and out of the storage space upon movement of the backrest into and out of the fixed seating position.

The seating system according to claim 1, wherein the retaining arrangement comprises a tubular retainer attached to an outside surface of the pivot arm, the tubular retainer having a spring-biased retaining pin that is coupled to cables secured to a release handle on the backrest such that actuation of the release handle releases the retaining arrangement and allows movement of the backrest.

The seating system according to claim 6, further comprising a positioning plate coupled to the frame and having positional apertures, wherein engagement between the spring-biased retaining pin and a respective one of the positional apertures locks the backrest in a position corresponding to the respective one of the positional apertures.
8. The seating system according to claim 7, wherein the positioning plate has a curved contour, and at least a portion of the pivot arm generally follows the curved contour of the positioning plate.

The seating system according to claim 6, wherein the release handle is mounted for sliding movement within an upper medial portion of the backrest, and is operatively connected to the retaining arrangement so that grasping the release handle unlocks the backrest with respect to the fixed backrest position and so that releasing the handle locks the backrest with respect to the fixed backrest position.

The seating system according to claim 9, further comprising a trigger device that is movably mounted on the upper medial portion of the backrest, and configured for selective engagement and disengagement with the release handle to enable locking and unlocking of the backrest with respect to the second position.

The seating system according to claim 1, further comprising a worktable coupled to the backrest on an opposite side of the backrest relative to the second support surface, wherein the worktable is downwardly pivotable with respect to the backrest when the backrest is in the fixed backrest position, thereby providing a work surface for the occupant.
12. The seating system according to claim 11, further comprising a locking mechanism that is manually unlockable to allow the worktable to be pivoted with respect to the backrest.
13. A seating system for supporting an occupant of a marine vessel, the seating system comprising: a seat having a first support surface that underlies and supports the occupant while seated and facing in a first direction; a frame supporting the seat with respect to the marine vessel, wherein the frame comprises a plurality of elongate members surrounding a storage space and that leave each of a front, sides, and a rear of the frame substantially open between the storage space and an exterior of the frame; a backrest having a second support surface, the backrest being configured for movement relative to the seat and the frame into and between a fixed backrest position in which the second support surface provides back support for the occupant while seated and facing in the first direction, and a fixed seating position in which the second support surface underlies and supports the occupant while seated and facing in a second direction that is opposite the first direction, wherein when the backrest is in the fixed seating position, a portion of the seat is above the second support surface and provides a supplementary backrest for the occupant while seated and facing in the second direction; a pivot arm that couples the backrest to the frame so that the backrest is pivotable into and between the fixed backrest position and fixed seating position; a retaining arrangement that locks the backrest in the fixed backrest position; and a release handle for the retaining arrangement and for moving the backrest into and between the fixed backrest position and the fixed seating position, the release handle being located on a medial upper portion of a rear cover on the backrest, along a perimeter of the rear cover such that the release handle is accessible by the occupant while seated on the first support surface, wherein actuation of the release handle releases the retaining arrangement and allows movement of the backrest out of the fixed backrest position and into the fixed seating position, and particularly wherein the release handle is coupled to the retaining arrangement so that manually grasping the perimeter of the rear cover and the release handle and pulling the release handle towards the perimeter causes the release handle to slide upwardly in the rear cover and unlocks the backrest with respect to the fixed backrest position and so that manually releasing the handle locks the backrest with respect to the fixed backrest position.
14. The seating system according to claim 13, wherein manually releasing the release handle permits sliding of the release handle under a spring force, back away from the perimeter and into a locked position.
15. The seating system according to claim 14, further comprising a spring-biased trigger device configured for selective engagement with and disengagement from the release handle, thus facilitating locking and unlocking thereof.
16. The seating system according to claim 15, further comprising a cable coupled to the release handle and to the spring-biased trigger device, wherein the cable is routed through a rear cover on the backrest and through the pivot arm.
17. The seating system according to claim 16, wherein manually grasping the release handle pulls on the cable, which thereby unlocks the retaining arrangement and wherein manually releasing the handle permits the spring force to pull on the cable and thereby locks the retaining arrangement.
18. A seating system for supporting an occupant of a marine vessel, the seating system comprising: a seat having a first support surface that underlies and supports the occupant while seated and facing in a first direction; a frame defining a storage space beneath the seat and supporting the seat with respect to the marine vessel, wherein the frame comprises a plurality of elongate members surrounding the storage space and that leave each of a front, sides, and a rear of the frame substantially open between the storage space and an exterior of the frame; a backrest having a second support surface, the backrest being configured for movement relative to the seat and the frame into and between a fixed backrest position in which the second support surface provides back support for the occupant while seated and facing in the first direction, and a fixed seating position in which the second support surface underlies and supports the occupant while seated and facing in a second direction that is opposite the first direction, wherein when the backrest is in the fixed seating position, a portion of the seat is above the second support surface and provides a supplementary backrest for the occupant while seated and facing in the second direction; a pivot arm that couples the backrest to the frame so that the backrest is pivotable into and between the fixed backrest position and fixed seating position; a retaining arrangement that locks the backrest in the fixed backrest position, the retaining arrangement comprising a positioning plate coupled to the frame, the positioning plate having a curved portion with positional apertures; a release handle for the retaining arrangement and for moving the backrest into and between the fixed backrest position and the fixed seating position; and a spring-loaded retaining pin for engaging in positional apertures in the positioning plate, wherein the spring-loaded retaining pin is coupled to the pivot arm such that pivoting of the pivot arm towards the fixed backrest position moves the spring-loaded retaining pin into contact with the positioning plate, and in particular with the curved portion of the positioning plate and then into engagement with a selected one of the positional apertures and such that pivoting of the pivot arm towards the fixed seating position separates the spring-loaded retaining pin from the positioning plate.
19. The seating system according to claim 18, wherein engagement between the spring-biased retaining pin and a respective one of the positional apertures locks the backrest in a position corresponding to the respective one of the positional apertures.
20. The seating system according to claim 18, wherein the pivot arm is one of a pair of pivot arms that couple the backrest to the frame so that the backrest is pivotable into and between the fixed backrest position and fixed seating position.
