Abstract

Oral care compositions containing a stannous salt and sodium tripolyphosphate are provided where stannous tripolyphosphate ionic intermediates comprise less than about 1% of the compositions. Tetrasodium pyrophosphate, a methylvinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer and/or a silica oral polishing agent may be added for further efficacy. In a single phase blend, the oral care composition may be effectively limited to comprise less than about 10% water. In a dual-phase blend, a mixture having the stannous salt in a first phase and the sodium tripolyphosphate in a second phase may be generated from a dual chamber storage tube (with each phase provided from a separate chamber) immediately prior to dental care usage.

Claims

1. An oral care composition comprising: from about 0.01 to about 5% of stannous fluoride; thickening agents comprising a cellulosic polymer, a carboxyvinyl polymer, carrageenan, a natural gum, a colloidal magnesium aluminum silicate, or a colloidal silica; or a combination of two or more thereof; from about 0.5% to about 4% tetrasodium pyrophosphate and about 1% to about 15% sodium tripolyphosphate; and an adhesion agent comprising a film forming material and a hydrophilic organic polymer, and wherein the film forming material comprises a methylvinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer represented by formula (I): ##STR00002## wherein n is an integer that provides a molecular weight of said copolymer of about 60,000 to about 500,000; and a combination of silicas, wherein the composition comprises less than about 10% water and less than about 1% stannous tripolyphosphate ionic intermediates.

2. The oral care composition according to claim 1, comprising from about 0.1 to about 3% of stannous fluoride.

3. The oral care composition according to claim 1, further comprising about 1% of stannous fluoride.

4. The oral care composition according to claim 1, wherein the composition is in a form selected from: a dentifrice; a rinse; a gel; and a paint.

5. The oral care composition according to claim 1, further comprising an antibacterial agent.

6. The oral care composition according to claim 1, wherein the combination of silicas comprises a high cleaning silica.

7. A method of treating or preventing an disorder or condition of the oral cavity comprising administering an oral care composition according to claim 1, to the oral cavity of a subject in need thereof.

8. A method of providing a cosmetic benefit to the oral cavity, comprising administering an oral care composition according to claim 1, to the oral cavity of a subject in need thereof.
