DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0023] An apparatus 10 for helping to protect an occupant 12 of a vehicle 14 includes an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device 16 in the form of an airbag, such as a curtain airbag, for helping to protect the occupant in the event of a side impact to the vehicle. In the embodiment illustrated in
[0024] The vehicle 14 includes at least one vehicle seat 20 for vehicle occupants 12. The vehicle 14 also includes a vehicle roof 22 and a side structure 24. The vehicle 14 has two rows of seating which help dictate the configuration of the side structure 24. In the example configuration shown in
[0025] The curtain airbag 16 can be constructed of any suitable material, such as nylon (e.g., woven nylon 6-6 yarns), and can be constructed in any suitable manner. For example, the curtain airbag 16 may have a one-piece woven (OPW) construction in which the curtain airbag is woven as a single piece of material. As another example, the curtain airbag 16 can include more than one piece of material. If more than one piece is used, the pieces can be interconnected by known means, such as stitching, ultrasonic welding, heat bonding, or adhesives, to form the curtain airbag 16. The curtain airbag 16 can be uncoated, coated with a material, such as a gas impermeable urethane, or laminated with a material, such as a gas impermeable film. The curtain airbag 16 thus can have a gas-tight or substantially gas-tight construction. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that alternative materials, such as polyester yarn, and alternatives coatings, such as silicone, can also be used to construct the curtain airbag 16.
[0026] An inflator 38 is operably connected to an inflatable volume 40 of the curtain airbag 16 in any known manner. In the example configuration of
[0027] As shown in the example configuration of
[0028] As shown in
[0029] The mounting tab 52 is formed from a piece of airbag fabric 70 that extends from an upper edge 72 of the curtain airbag 16. For a multi-piece sewn construction of the curtain airbag 16, this piece of airbag fabric 70 can be formed integrally with an airbag panel or can be a separate piece connected to the curtain airbag, such as by stitching. The airbag fabric extension 70 can be folded over and interconnected (e.g., by stitching) to define the overlying layers 58, 60 and the pocket 62. For a one-piece woven (OPW) construction of the curtain airbag 16, the mounting tab 52 can be formed as an integral portion of the OPW construction in which the overlying layers 58, 60 are woven simultaneously and interwoven to define the pocket 62.
[0030] In the example configuration illustrated in
[0031] Advantageously, the configuration of the mounting bracket 54 allows for the elimination of additional mechanical fastening devices, such as push nuts or retaining washers, for retaining the fastener 56 in the mounting tab 52. As shown in the example configuration of
[0032] The retainer tab(s) 78 can be formed integrally with the plate 76 as one-piece, such as by injection molding. Alternatively, a solid plate 76 can be provided and then the bracket aperture 74 and retainer tab(s) 78 can be formed by milling, cutting, carving, and/or etching the solid plate. As another alternative, the retainer tab(s) 78 can be formed separate from the plate 76 and then bonded to the bracket aperture periphery 84. As another alternative, the retainer tab(s) 78 can be formed, and then the plate 76 can be formed by being overmolded around the formed retainer tab(s).
[0033] The free end portion 88 of the one or more retainer tabs 78 define a retainer aperture 90 in the bracket aperture 74. In the example configuration shown in
[0034] The retainer tabs' 78 ability to deflect can be the result of the retainer tabs' structure and/or material composition. As discussed above, each of the retainer tabs 78 is merged with, and thus supported by, the remainder of the mounting bracket 54 only at the merged end portion 86. Because of this configuration, the free end portions 88 are able to pivot upward/downward, in the orientation of
[0035] The thickness of the retainer tabs 78 can also contribute to the retainer tabs' ability to deflect relative to the remainder of the mounting bracket 54. As shown in
[0036] The retainer tabs 78 can also be configured to deflect relative to the remainder of the mounting bracket 54 as a result of the material(s) selected to construct the mounting bracket. The mounting bracket 54, and thus the retainer tabs 78, can be formed from a resiliently flexible material, such as thermoplastic olefin. Forming the retainer tabs 78 from a resiliently flexible material permits the retainer tabs to deflect under the axial insertion force of the shank 68 without breaking off from the plate 76 and/or being permanently deformed.
[0037] Advantageously, because the plate 76 is formed from a resiliently flexible material, the mounting bracket 54 is able to absorb deployment forces of the curtain airbag 16, such as by deforming or flexing in response to the deployment forces, to reduce deployment force caused stress on the airbag fabric 70 at the mounting tab 52.
[0038] Referring to
[0039] Regardless of whether the retainer tabs 78 remain deflected or return to the non-deflected position after the fastener 56 has been installed in the mounting tab 52, the retainer aperture 90 forms an interference with the fastener shank 68. This interference is the result of the retainer tabs 78 being sized so that the free end portions 88 engage the shank threading 92 of an installed fastener 56. The engagement between the free end portions 88 and the shank threading 92 limits and/or prevents the fastener 56 from being removed from the mounting tab 52, and thus holds the fastener in the mounting tab during installation of the curtain airbag package 48.
[0040] As shown in
[0041] Although the retainer tabs and aperture 78, 90 have been shown as being integrated in the mounting bracket 54, the retainer tabs and aperture can also be integrated in other components of the curtain airbag package 48, such as in deployment controlling ramps and in shape maintainers that maintain the curtain airbag rolled and/or folded.
[0042] The retainer aperture 110 of the deployment controlling ramp 106 has a diameter selected to form an interference with the fastener shank 68 to hold the fastener 56 in the mounting tab 52 and in the deployment controlling ramp during installation of the curtain airbag package 48. Similarly to that described above, the shank 68 can be installed through the retainer aperture 110 of the deployment controlling ramp 106 without damaging the retainer tabs 108 because 1) the fastener shank is threaded 92 and, because those threads are helical, the interference can be overcome by manually twisting, wiggling, etc. while applying an axial installation force to the fastener 56, and/or 2) the retainer tabs can be configured to deflect to permit the passage of the shank.
[0043] Although the curtain airbag package 48 in
[0044] From the above description of the invention, those skilled in the art will perceive improvements, changes and modifications. Such improvements, changes and modifications within the skill of the art are intended to be covered by the appended claims.
