Abstract
A centrifuge rotor assembly includes a chamber assembly, a bearing support, and a counterweight that is substantially diametrically opposed to the bearing support with respect to the chamber assembly. The chamber assembly receives a processing chamber of a fluid circuit, while the bearing support receives a portion of an umbilicus that is fluidly connected to the processing chamber. The bearing support and counterweight are rotated about a central axis of the chamber assembly by an electric drive of the centrifuge rotor assembly, with the bearing support and counterweight remaining substantially diametrically opposed to each other with respect to the chamber assembly while being rotated about the central axis. The electric drive may rotate the bearing support and counterweight at a plurality of different speeds, with the counterweight automatically moving with respect to the bearing support between radially innermost and radially outermost positions to balance the centrifuge rotor assembly.
Claims
1. A centrifuge rotor assembly comprising: a chamber assembly having a central axis and configured to receive at least a portion of a processing chamber of a fluid circuit; a bearing support configured to receive a portion of an umbilicus fluidly connected to the processing chamber; a counterweight positioned substantially diametrically opposed to the bearing support with respect to the chamber assembly; and an electric drive configured to rotate the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis at a plurality of different rotational speeds, wherein the bearing support and the counterweight are configured to remain substantially diametrically opposed to each other with respect to the chamber assembly during rotation of the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis, the counterweight is automatically movable with respect to the bearing support between a radially innermost position and a radially outermost position during rotation of the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis, the position of the counterweight depends at least in part on the rotational speed at which the bearing support and the counterweight are rotated about the central axis, and the counterweight is configured to automatically move to a different radial position during rotation of the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis in response to a change in the radial and/or axial position of at least a portion of the umbilicus with respect to the central axis.
2. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 1, wherein the counterweight is configured to be positioned at said radially outermost position when the electric drive is rotating the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis at a maximum rotational speed.
3. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 1, wherein the counterweight is configured to be positioned at said radially innermost position when the electric drive is rotating the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis at a minimum rotational speed.
4. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 1, wherein the counterweight is configured to be positioned between said radially innermost position and said radially outermost position when the electric drive is rotating the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis at a rotational speed between a maximum rotational speed and a minimum rotational speed.
5. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 1, further comprising a yoke cross member including a pair of wing plates, wherein the bearing support is associated with one of the wing plates and the counterweight is associated with the other one of the wing plates.
6. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 1, further comprising a resilient member associated with the counterweight and configured to bias the counterweight toward the radially innermost position.
7. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 6, wherein said resilient member comprises a spring.
8. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 1, further comprising an electrically driven positioning member associated with the counterweight and operable to move the counterweight between the radially innermost and radially outermost positions.
9. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 8, wherein the positioning member comprises an electrical worm drive servo.
10. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 1, wherein the counterweight is infinitely positionable between the radially innermost and radially outermost positions.
11. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 1, wherein the counterweight is positionable in a defined number of positions between the radially innermost and radially outermost positions.
12. A centrifuge rotor assembly comprising: a chamber assembly having a central axis and configured to receive at least a portion of a processing chamber of a fluid circuit; a bearing support configured to receive a portion of an umbilicus fluidly connected to the processing chamber; a counterweight positioned substantially diametrically opposed to the bearing support with respect to the chamber assembly; and an electric drive configured to rotate the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis at a plurality of different rotational speeds, wherein the bearing support and the counterweight are configured to remain substantially diametrically opposed to each other with respect to the chamber assembly during rotation of the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis, the counterweight is automatically movable along a counterweight support with respect to the bearing support between a radially innermost position and a radially outermost position during rotation of the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis, the position of the counterweight depends at least in part on the rotational speed at which the bearing support and the counterweight are rotated about the central axis, and the counterweight is movable along the counterweight support in a direction having an axial component defined by the counterweight support when moving to a more radially outward position and/or to a more radially inward position.

The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 12, wherein the counterweight is configured to be positioned between said radially innermost position and said radially outermost position when the electric drive is rotating the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis at a rotational speed between a maximum rotational speed and a minimum rotational speed.
14. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 12, further comprising a yoke cross member including a pair of wing plates, wherein the bearing support is associated with one of the wing plates and the counterweight is associated with the other one of the wing plates.
15. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 12, further comprising a resilient member associated with the counterweight and configured to bias the counterweight toward the radially innermost position.
16. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 12, further comprising an electrically driven positioning member associated with the counterweight and operable to move the counterweight between the radially innermost and radially outermost positions.
17. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 12, wherein the counterweight is infinitely positionable between the radially innermost and radially outermost positions.
18. A centrifuge rotor assembly comprising: a chamber assembly having a central axis and configured to receive at least a portion of a processing chamber of a fluid circuit; a bearing support configured to receive a portion of an umbilicus fluidly connected to the processing chamber; a counterweight positioned substantially diametrically opposed to the bearing support with respect to the chamber assembly; and an electric drive configured to rotate the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis at a plurality of different rotational speeds, wherein the bearing support and the counterweight are configured to remain substantially diametrically opposed to each other with respect to the chamber assembly during rotation of the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis, the counterweight is automatically movable along a counterweight support with respect to the bearing support between a radially innermost position and a radially outermost position during rotation of the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis, the position of the counterweight depends at least in part on the rotational speed at which the bearing support and the counterweight are rotated about the central axis, and the counterweight is movable along a non-linear path defined by the counterweight support when moving between the radially innermost position and the radially outermost position.
19. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 18, wherein the counterweight is configured to be positioned between said radially innermost position and said radially outermost position when the electric drive is rotating the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis at a rotational speed between a maximum rotational speed and a minimum rotational speed.
20. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 18, further comprising a yoke cross member including a pair of wing plates, wherein the bearing support is associated with one of the wing plates and the counterweight is associated with the other one of the wing plates.
21. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 18, further comprising a resilient member associated with the counterweight and configured to bias the counterweight toward the radially innermost position.
22. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 18, further comprising an electrically driven positioning member associated with the counterweight and operable to move the counterweight between the radially innermost and radially outermost positions.
23. The centrifuge rotor assembly of claim 18, wherein the counterweight is infinitely positionable between the radially innermost and radially outermost positions.

(27) In one embodiment, the radial position of the counterweight 80 between the radially innermost and outermost positions is infinitely adjustable (i.e., the counterweight 80 may be moved to and remain in any position between the radially innermost and radially outermost positions). In another embodiment, the counterweight 80 is completely movable between the radially innermost and radially outermost positions, but is positionable in only a defined number of positions therebetween. For example, the counterweight 80 may be selectively retained in only five locations—the radially outermost position, the radially innermost position, and three intermediate locations between the radially outermost and innermost positions. The most advantageous configuration may depend upon the behavior of the umbilicus 24 at different rotational speeds during use, along with other factors (e.g., the cost and/or complexity of the system and/or the space available to accommodate components of the counterweight movement system).

(29) The farther the umbilicus 24 is from the central axis 44 (i.e., at higher rotational speeds), the greater effect it will have on unbalancing the centrifuge rotor assembly 78. Accordingly, at greater rotational speeds, the counterweight 80 must be able to apply to greater counteractive force to oppose the greater tendency of the umbilicus 24 to imbalance the centrifuge rotor assembly 78. This is achieved by moving the counterweight 80 radially outwardly as the speed at which the umbilicus 24/bearing support 70 and counterweight 80 are rotated increases. In one embodiment, the counterweight 80 may be moved such that the distance between the counterweight 80 and the central axis 44 (i.e., the radial position of the counterweight 80) is the same as the distance between the central axis 44 and a particular portion of the umbilicus 24 during the entirety of a procedure. In other embodiments, the radial position of the counterweight 80 may vary with respect to the radial position of any portion of the umbilicus 24 during a procedure.

(31) Preferably, the radial position and unbalancing effect of the umbilicus 24 at a plurality of different rotational speeds are experimentally determined. With that information, the optimal radial position of the counterweight 80 may be determined for any rotational speed between the minimum and maximum rotational speeds. This information may also be used to determine the locations selected to be the radially innermost and radially outermost positions for the counterweight 80. Such an approach allows for suitable controls to be designed for automatically moving the counterweight 80 into the proper position for balancing the centrifuge rotor assembly 78 at any rotational speed.
(32) The manner in which the counterweight 80 is moved between the radially innermost and radially outermost positions may vary. In one embodiment, the counterweight 80 is free to move radially solely under the centrifugal force applied to it by the rotating centrifuge rotor assembly 78. In this case, it may be advantageous for the counterweight 80 to be biased toward its radially innermost position, such as by providing a path that is upwardly inclined from the radially innermost position to the radially outermost position. By such a configuration, the counterweight 80 will tend to return to its radially innermost position under the force of gravity if a sufficiently strong centrifugal force is not applied to cause it to move to a more radially outward position.

(41) Aspects of the present subject matter described above may be beneficial alone or in combination with one or more other aspects. Without limiting the foregoing description, in accordance with one aspect of the subject matter herein, there is provided a centrifuge rotor assembly. The centrifuge rotor assembly includes a chamber assembly having a central axis and configured to receive at least a portion of a processing chamber of a fluid circuit. The centrifuge rotor assembly also includes a bearing support and a counterweight. The bearing support is configured to receive a portion of an umbilicus fluidly connected to the processing chamber, while the counterweight is positioned substantially diametrically opposed to the bearing support with respect to the chamber assembly. An electric drive is configured to rotate the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis at a plurality of different rotational speeds, with the bearing support and the counterweight being configured to remain substantially diametrically opposed to each other with respect to the chamber assembly during rotation of the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis. The counterweight is automatically movable with respect to the bearing support between a radially innermost position and a radially outermost position during rotation of the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis, with the position of the counterweight depending at least in part on the rotational speed at which the bearing support and the counterweight are rotated about the central axis.
(42) In accordance with another aspect which may be used or combined with the preceding aspect, the counterweight is configured to be positioned at its radially outermost position when the electric drive is rotating the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis at a maximum rotational speed.

(52) In accordance with another aspect, there is provided a method of operating a centrifuge rotor assembly comprising a chamber assembly having a central axis and receiving at least a portion of a processing chamber of a fluid circuit, a bearing support receiving a portion of an umbilicus fluidly connected to the processing chamber, and a counterweight positioned substantially diametrically opposed to the bearing support with respect to the chamber assembly. The method includes rotating the bearing support and the counterweight about the central axis at a first rotational speed while the bearing support and the counterweight remain substantially diametrically opposed to each other with respect to the chamber assembly. The rotational speed is changed from the first rotational speed to a second rotational speed while the bearing support and the counterweight remain substantially diametrically opposed to each other with respect to the chamber assembly. Changing the rotational speed to the second rotational speed includes automatically moving the counterweight with respect to the bearing support from a first radial position to a second radial position, with the radial position of the counterweight depending at least in part on the rotational speed at which the bearing support and the counterweight are rotated about the central axis.
(53) In accordance with another aspect which may be used or combined with the preceding aspect, changing the rotational speed to the second rotational speed includes increasing the rotational speed, with the second radial position being farther from the central axis than the first radial position.
(54) In accordance with another aspect which may be used or combined with the preceding aspect, the second rotational speed is a maximum rotational speed and the second radial position is a radially outermost position.
(55) In accordance with another aspect which may be used or combined with any of the preceding two aspects, the first rotational speed is a minimum rotational speed and the first radial position is a radially innermost position.
(56) In accordance with another aspect which may be used or combined with the twelfth or thirteenth aspects, at least one of the first and second rotational speeds is between a minimum rotational speed and a maximum rotational speed, with the radial position of the counterweight when the bearing support and the counterweight are being rotated about the central axis at that rotational speed being between a radially innermost position and a radially outermost position.
(57) In accordance with another aspect which may be used or combined with any of the thirteenth through sixteenth aspects, automatically moving the counterweight with respect to the bearing support from a first radial position to a second radial position includes overcoming a biasing force applied to the counterweight by a resilient member.
(58) In accordance with another aspect which may be used or combined with the twelfth aspect, changing the rotational speed to a second rotational speed includes decreasing the rotational speed, with the second radial position being closer to the central axis than the first radial position.
(59) In accordance with another aspect which may be used or combined with the preceding aspect, the first rotational speed is a maximum rotational speed and the first radial position is a radially outermost position.
(60) In accordance with another aspect which may be used or combined with any of the preceding two aspects, the second rotational speed is a minimum rotational speed and the second radial position is a radially innermost position.
(61) In accordance with another aspect which may be used or combined with the eighteenth aspect, at least one of the first and second rotational speeds is between a minimum rotational speed and a maximum rotational speed, with the radial position of the counterweight when the bearing support and the counterweight are being rotated about the central axis at that rotational speed being between a radially innermost position and a radially outermost position.
(62) In accordance with another aspect which may be used or combined with any of the preceding four aspects, automatically moving the counterweight with respect to the bearing support from the first radial position to the second radial position includes moving the counterweight under the influence of a biasing force applied to the counterweight.
(63) In accordance with another aspect which may be used or combined with any of the twelfth through twenty-second aspects, automatically moving the counterweight with respect to the bearing support from the first radial position to the second radial position includes moving the counterweight using an electrically driven positioning member.
(64) It will be understood that the embodiments and examples described above are illustrative of some of the applications of the principles of the present subject matter. Numerous modifications may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the claimed subject matter, including those combinations of features that are individually disclosed or claimed herein. For these reasons, the scope hereof is not limited to the above description but is as set forth in the following claims, and it is understood that claims may be directed to the features hereof, including as combinations of features that are individually disclosed or claimed herein.
