DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0035] The present invention relates to a packaging apparatus which allows users with just the use of one hand to conveniently retrieve a product from the packaging apparatus. The packaging apparatus is also known as pharmaceutical packaging, having a pod and a retaining layer. The pod is preferably made of a semi-rigid or a rigid material with a portion having deep drawn recess which can be referred as compartments, pockets or wells that conveniently accommodates the product. In a preferred embodiment of the pod, the compartment is formed with a lip outwardly extending from periphery of the opening of the compartment. In application, the compartment is filled with the product and then sealed by the retaining layer that closes the pod through adhering the lip of the pod to the retaining layer so that the product is held captive within the pod. For example, and not by limitation, the packaging apparatus is a pharmaceutical packaging apparatus containing a medicinal product that may be in a solid, semi solid, gel or liquid form. However, the packaging apparatus can be used to contain other suitable organic, inorganic or composite materials such as cosmetic products, electronic components, foods and snacks.
[0036] By way of example, but not by way of limitation, the pod can be made of polymer material such as polyethylene terephthalate that allows the pod to be resistant to impact but is typically deformable when application of force exceeds a certain threshold.
[0037] Preferably, the retaining layer is of multilayer construction that includes at least one barrier film and one metal layer. Preferably, the barrier film is made of polyethylene terephthalate, ethylene vinyl alcohol and other suitable materials that are breakable through piercing or stretching to form an opening. The metal layer can be made of aluminium or any other suitable metals. However, the metal layer can be substituted, for example by a plastic layer.
[0038] Preferably, the metal layer is sufficiently thin but has sufficient thickness for rigidity to allow the metal layer to pierce through the barrier film when the metal layer is forced to deflect outwards of the pod.
[0039] Although, the invention can be presented in a number of different embodiments, and can incorporate a variety of different components and technologies, the various embodiments of the invention have some common elements. According to the concept of the invention, the packaging apparatus comprises a configuration that uses hand squeezing strength to release the product from the packaging apparatus. This can be carried out by the user with just a single hand. The configuration can be in the form of the pod and/or the retaining layer having a predetermined frangible feature which provides a weakened portion in part of the surface of the pod and/or the retaining layer and the weakened portion can be broken by deforming the pod to get access to the product.
[0040] The term “a predetermined frangible feature” as used herein refers to a characteristic of being able to be broken into fragments. The predetermined frangible feature is provided by a weakened portion in part of the surface of the pod and/or the retaining layer. The weakened portion has a substantially lower resistance to break compared to other areas of the surface of the pod and/or the retaining layer. The weakened portion would break first to form an opening thus releasing the product through the opening.
[0041] The invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example, with reference to the drawings.
[0042]
[0043]
[0044]
[0045] In a second embodiment as illustrated in
[0046] In a third embodiment as illustrated in
[0047] Similarly, for the second and third embodiment, the deformation of the pod 1 renders the metal layer to be bent in such a way that the metal layer pierces through the barrier film 22. The pre-cut of the metal layer is forced to deflect outwards by the deformation of the pod 1, therefore piercing through the barrier film 22. Subsequently, the product 3 is released through the opening formed in the barrier film 22.
[0048]
[0049] In this particular application as depicted in
[0050]
[0051] In this particular embodiment, the retaining layer 2 comprises a barrier film 22 and a metal layer. Preferably, the barrier film 22 is sandwiched between the metal layer and the pair of pods 1. By way of example but not by limitation, the metal layer is an aluminium layer 21 having a substantially S-shaped pre-cut 41.
[0052] Preferably, the lip of the pod 1 is formed by protruded portions 13 for enhancing rigidity of the pod such that the pod 1 is not easily deformed when no force for opening the packaging apparatus to gain access to the product 3 is exerted thereto. In addition, flaps 7 are provided in the fifth embodiment of the invention. A v-shaped cut 14 is formed in between two adjacent flaps that extends towards the compartment of the pod to assist the pod 1 to be deformed inwardly when a force intended to open the packaging apparatus is exerted thereto.
[0053] Referring to
[0054] The predetermined frangible feature of the pods 1 ruptures and the rupture extends towards both ends of the substantially S-shaped pre-cut 41. The deformation of the pod 1 causes the metal layer to be bent in such a way that the substantially S-shaped pre-cut 41 on the metal layer breaks from its ruptured ends. At least part of the substantially S-shaped pre-cut 41 is forced to deflect inwards due to the deformation of the pod 1, therefore piercing through the barrier film 22. Subsequently, the product 3 is released through the opening formed in the barrier film 22.
[0055] The present disclosure includes as contained in the appended claims, as well as that of the foregoing description. Although this invention has been described in its preferred form with a degree of particularity, it is understood that the present disclosure of the preferred form has been made only by way of example and that numerous changes in the details of construction and the combination and arrangements of parts may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the invention.
