Abstract

A bathing area surround includes a bathtub and a tub surround. The bathtub has a bathing basin that extends upwardly to a tub ledge extending outwardly from a rim, traverse to a sidewall, to an edge having tub flange is shaped to form at least one inwardly extending pocket that forms a tab receiving recess. The tub surround includes a back panel, and two side panels. The back panel and the two side panels each have downwardly extending locking tabs formed in their bottom edges, shaped to be inserted into the corresponding tab receiving recess, behind the tub flange. The back panel is then fastened to each of the two side panels via fasteners.

Description

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

(1) The accompanying drawings illustrate the present invention. In such drawings:

(2) FIG. 1 is a front elevational view of a bathing area surround according to one embodiment of the present invention;

(3) FIG. 2 is an exploded perspective view thereof;

(4) FIG. 3 is a sectional view thereof taken along line 3-3 in FIG. 2;

(5) FIG. 4 is a sectional view thereof taken along line 4-4 in FIG. 1; and

(6) FIG. 5 is a rear perspective view, illustrating fasteners for fastening a water-tight seam between two panels of the surround.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

(7) The above-described drawing figures illustrate the invention, a bathing area surround that is fast and easy to install, and which does not leak.

(8) FIG. 1 is a front elevational view of a bathing area surround 10 according to one embodiment of the present invention, shown in a fully assembled configuration. As shown in FIG. 1, the bathing area surround 10 comprises a bathtub 20 and a tub surround 40. The tub surround 40 includes a back panel 42 and two side panels 44 which together surround three sides of the bathtub 20. The bathing area surround 10 may further include many different features and designs, such as shelves 49, and may further include any ornamentation, texture, or any other features commonly associated with shower or bathtub walls.

(9) FIG. 2 is an exploded perspective view of the bathing area surround 10. As shown in FIG. 2, the bathtub 20 includes a bathing basin 22 formed by a bottom surface 24 surrounded by an upwardly extending sidewall 26 which extends upwardly to a rim 28. The bathtub 20 further includes a tub ledge 30 extending outwardly from the rim 28, traverse to the sidewall 26, to an edge 32. The tub ledge 30 is formed by a front portion 34a and a rear portion 34b connected by side portions 34c.

(10) A tub flange 38 extends upwardly from or adjacent the edge 32, to help prevent leakage. In this embodiment, the tub flange 38 extends upwardly from the rear portion 34b and the side portions 36 of the tub ledge 30 adjacent the edge 32. The tub flange 38 is shaped to form at least one inwardly extending pocket 50 in the rear portion 34b, and each of the side portions 36, which forms a tab receiving recess 52. In this embodiment, the rear portion 34b includes two tab receiving recesses 52, but in other embodiments, there may be a different number of recesses 52, as deemed suitable by the manufacturer.

(11) As shown in FIG. 2, the tub surround 40 includes multiple panels for surrounding three sides of the bathing area. The back panel 42 has a bottom edge 46a and side edges 48a, and each of the side panels 44 has a bottom edge 46b, and two side edges 48b. The back panel 42 and the two side panels 44 each have downwardly extending locking tabs 54 formed in their bottom edges 46a and 46b, shaped to be inserted into the corresponding tab receiving recess 52, which is importantly located behind the tub flange 38 (opposite the rim 28 of the bathing basin 22).

(12) In this embodiment, the locking tabs 54 are constructed of polymer plastic and are integral with the rest of the tub surround 40, but in other embodiments, the locking tabs 54 may be any material which is rigid and resilient for secure insertion into the tab receiving recesses 52 (e.g., glass fiber, metal, etc.). In this embodiment, the locking tabs 54 are tapered to facilitate installation, but in other embodiments the locking tabs 54 may be any shape that may fit in the recesses 52, e.g., round, rectangular, triangular, etc. In the present invention, the locking tabs 54 are positioned behind the tub flange 38, and do not extend downwardly into the tub ledge 30.

(13) FIG. 3 is a sectional view of the bathing area surround 10 taken along line 3-3 in FIG. 2, and FIG. 4 is a sectional view thereof taken along line 4-4 in FIG. 1. FIGS. 2-4 illustrate one embodiment of how the locking tabs 54 interlock with the recesses 52. In this embodiment, the bottom edge 46b of the side panel 44 may further include a front sealing edge 56 that abuts the rear portion 34c of the tub ledge 30 between the tub flange 38 and the rim 28 of the bathtub 20. With this configuration, the tabs 54 are able to facilitate proper installation, and by interlocking behind the flange 38, leaks are prevented.

(14) FIG. 5 is a rear perspective view of the bathing area surround 10, showing fasteners 58 for fastening a water-tight seam 60. Once the downwardly extending tabs 54 have been inserted into the receiving recesses 52, at least one of the side edges 48a of the back panel 42 abuts one of the side edges 48b of at least one of the side panels 44 to form the water-tight seam 60. In this embodiment, each side edge 48a of the back panel abuts one of the side edges 48b of each of the side panels 44. As shown in FIGS. 2 and 5, each of the abutting side edges 48 may include a panel flange 62 having a plurality of holes 54 for receiving the fasteners 58, wherein the fasteners 58 fasten the back panel 42 to each of the two side panels 44. In some embodiments, the fasteners 58 are in the form of push lock rivets positioned adjacent the water-tight seam 60 for securing the side edges 48 together. However, in other embodiments, the fasteners 58 may be in the form of clips, locks, ties, a powerful adhesive, etc., or any other type of fastener known to those in the art. In this embodiment, the panel flanges 62 extend outwardly from the bathtub 20, and are not visible in the fully constructed configuration of FIG. 1.
