Abstract

A liquid crystal composition and a liquid crystal display device including the liquid crystal composition include at least one compound of general formula I and at least one compound of general formula II. Compared with the prior art, the liquid crystal composition has a smaller voltage change rate at high and low temperatures and a shorter low temperature response time, while maintaining an appropriate optical anisotropy, an appropriate clearing point, an appropriate absolute value of dielectric anisotropy, such that the liquid crystal display device having the liquid crystal composition has a better display and a faster response speed. ##STR00001##

Claims

1. A liquid crystal composition, wherein the liquid crystal composition comprises: at least one compound of general formula I ##STR00099## at least one compound of general formulas II-1, II-2, II-5, II-6, II-7, and II-11 selected from the group consisting of: ##STR00100## at least one compound of general formula III-1 ##STR00101## in which, R.sub.1 represents H; R.sub.2 represents H, halogen, C.sub.1-12 linear alkyl or C.sub.3-12 branched alkyl, ##STR00102## wherein one or more nonadjacent CH.sub.2 in the C.sub.1-12 linear alkyl or C.sub.3-12 branched alkyl can each be independently replaced by CHCH, CC, O, CO, COO or OCO, and one or more H in ##STR00103## can each be independently substituted by F or Cl; R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 each independently represents C.sub.1-12 linear alkyl or C.sub.3-12 branched alkyl, ##STR00104## wherein one or more nonadjacent CH.sub.2 in the C.sub.1-12 linear alkyl or C.sub.3-12 branched alkyl can each be independently replaced by CHCH, CC, O, CO, COO or OCO; ring ##STR00105## represents ##STR00106## wherein one or more CH.sub.2 in ##STR00107## can be replaced by O, and one or more single bond in the rings can be replaced by double bond, wherein one or more H on ##STR00108## in the ring ##STR00109## can each be independently substituted by F, Cl, CN, CH.sub.3 or OCH.sub.3, and one or more CH in the ring ##STR00110## can be replaced by N; ring ##STR00111## represents ##STR00112## wherein one or more CH.sub.2 in and ##STR00113## can be replaced by O, and one or more single bond in the rings can be replaced by double bond, wherein one or more H on ##STR00114## in the ring ##STR00115## can each be independently substituted by F, Cl, CN, CH.sub.3 or OCH.sub.3, and one or more CH in the ring ##STR00116## can be replaced by N; X.sub.1 represents O, S, CO, CF.sub.2, NH or NF; Y.sub.1 and Y.sub.2 each independently represents H, halogen, C.sub.1-3 halogenated or unhalogenated alkyl, or C.sub.1-3 halogenated or unhalogenated alkoxy; Z.sub.1 represents O, S, COO, OCO, OCH.sub.2, CHCH, CC, CH.sub.2CH.sub.2, CF.sub.2CF.sub.2, (CH.sub.2).sub.4, CF.sub.2O or OCF.sub.2, and Z.sub.2 represents single bond, O, S, COO, OCO, CH.sub.2O, OCH.sub.2, CHCH, CC, CH.sub.2CH.sub.2, CF.sub.2CF.sub.2, (CH.sub.2).sub.4, CF.sub.2O or OCF.sub.2; T.sub.1, T.sub.2, T.sub.4, T.sub.5, T.sub.6, and T.sub.8 each independently represents H, F, Cl, CN, CH.sub.3 or OCH.sub.3; R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 each independently represents C.sub.1-10 linear alkyl or C.sub.3-10 branched alkyl, ##STR00117## C.sub.1-9 linear alkyl or C.sub.3-9 branched alkoxy, or C.sub.2-10 linear alkyl or C.sub.3-10 branched alkenyl; and n.sub.1 represents 1 or 2, n.sub.2 represents 0, 1 or 2, wherein when n.sub.1=2, ring ##STR00118## can be same or different, and Z.sub.1 can be same or different; wherein when n.sub.2=2, ring ##STR00119## can be same or different, and Z.sub.2 can be same or different.

2. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 1, wherein the compound of general formula I is selected from a group consisting of the following compounds: ##STR00120## in which, ring ##STR00121## represents ##STR00122## wherein one or more CH.sub.2 in ##STR00123## can be replaced by O, and one or more single bond in the rings can be replaced by double bond, wherein one or more H on ##STR00124## in the ring ##STR00125## can each be independently substituted by F, Cl, CN, CH.sub.3 or OCH.sub.3, and one or more CH in the ring ##STR00126## can be replaced by N; Z.sub.1 represents O, S, COO, OCO, OCH.sub.2, CHCH, CC, CH.sub.2CH.sub.2, CF.sub.2CF.sub.2, (CH.sub.2).sub.4, CF.sub.2O or OCF.sub.2; and X.sub.1 represents O, S or CO.

The liquid crystal composition according to claim 1, further comprising a compound selected from a group consisting ##STR00127## wherein R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 each independently represents C.sub.1-12 linear alkyl or C.sub.3-12 branched alkyl, ##STR00128## wherein one or more nonadjacent CH.sub.2 in the C.sub.1-12 linear alkyl or C.sub.3-12 branched alkyl can each be independently replaced by CHCH, CC, O, CO, COO or OCO.

The liquid crystal composition according to claim 1, wherein the compound of general formula I provides 0.1-40 wt. % of the total weight of the liquid crystal composition; and the compound of general formulas II-1, II-2, II-5, II-6, II-7, and II-11 provides 0.1-70 wt. % of the total weight of the liquid crystal composition.

The liquid crystal composition according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal composition further comprises at least one compound of general formula III-2: ##STR00129## in which, T.sub.9, T.sub.10 and T.sub.11 each independently represents H, F, Cl, CN, CH.sub.3 or OCH.sub.3; and X.sub.2 represents F, CF.sub.3, OCF.sub.3 or CH.sub.2CH.sub.2CHCF.sub.2.

6. The liquid crystal composition according to claim 5, wherein the compounds of general formulas III-1 and III-2 provide 0.1-50 wt. % of the total weight of the liquid crystal composition.

The liquid crystal composition according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal composition further comprises at least one compound of general formula M: ##STR00130## in which, R.sub.M1 and R.sub.M2 each independently represents C.sub.1-12 linear alkyl or C.sub.3-12 branched alkyl, ##STR00131## wherein one or more nonadjacent CH.sub.2 in the C.sub.1-12 linear alkyl or C.sub.3-12 branched alkyl can each be independently replaced by CHCH, CC, O, CO, COO or OCO; ring ##STR00132## ring ##STR00133## and ring ##STR00134## each independently represents ##STR00135## wherein one or more CH.sub.2 on ##STR00136## in the rings ##STR00137## can be replaced by O, one or more single bond in the ring can be replaced by double bond, wherein at most one H on ##STR00138## in the rings ##STR00139## can be substituted by halogen; Z.sub.M1 and Z.sub.M2 each independently represents single bond, COO, OCO, CH.sub.2O, OCH.sub.2, CC, CHCH, CH.sub.2CH.sub.2 or (CH.sub.2).sub.4; and n.sub.M represents 0, 1 or 2, wherein when n.sub.M=2, ring ##STR00140## can be same or different, Z.sub.M2 can be same or different; and when n.sub.M=1 or 2, at least one of ring ##STR00141## ring ##STR00142## and ring ##STR00143## is non-aromatic ring.

The liquid crystal composition according to claim 1, wherein the liquid crystal composition further comprises at least one compound of general formula N: ##STR00144## in which, R.sub.N1 and R.sub.N2 each independently represents C.sub.1-12 linear alkyl or C.sub.3-12 branched alkyl, ##STR00145## wherein one or more nonadjacent CH.sub.2 in the C.sub.1-12 linear alkyl or C.sub.3-12 branched alkyl can each be independently replaced by CHCH, CC, O, CO, COO or OCO; ring ##STR00146## and ring ##STR00147## each independently represents or ##STR00148## wherein one or more CH.sub.2 on ##STR00149## in the rings ##STR00150## and ##STR00151## can be replaced by O, and one or more single bond in the ring can be replaced by double bond, wherein one or more H on ##STR00152## in the rings ##STR00153## can each be independently substituted by F, Cl, CN, CH.sub.3 or OCH.sub.3, and one or more CH in the ring can be replaced by N; Z.sub.N1 and Z.sub.N2 each independently represents single bond, COO, OCO, CH.sub.2O, OCH.sub.2, CHCH, CC, CH.sub.2CH.sub.2, CF.sub.2CF.sub.2, (CH.sub.2).sub.4, CF.sub.2O or OCF.sub.2; L.sub.N1 and L.sub.N2 each independently represents H, C.sub.1-3 alkyl or halogen; n.sub.N1 represents 0, 1, 2 or 3, n.sub.N2 represents 0 or 1, and 0n.sub.N1+n.sub.N23, wherein when n.sub.N1=2 N.sub.1 or 3, ring ##STR00154## can be same or different, Z.sub.N1 can be same or different; when 0n.sub.N1+n.sub.N22, compounds of general formula N do not comprise terphenyl structure; and when n.sub.N1+n.sub.N2=3, compounds of general formula N do not comprise quaterphenyl structure.

9. A liquid crystal display device comprising the liquid crystal composition of claim 1.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

(1) The present invention will be illustrated by combining the detailed embodiments below. It should be noted that, the following examples are exemplary embodiments of the present invention, which are only used to illustrate the present invention, not to limit it. Other combinations and various modifications within the conception of the present invention are possible without departing from the subject matter and scope of the present invention.

(2) For the convenience of the expression, the group structures of the liquid crystal compositions in the following Examples are represented by the codes listed in Table 1:

(8) The ingredients used in the following Examples can be synthesized by well-known methods or obtained by commercial means. These synthetic techniques are routine, and the test results show that the liquid crystal compounds thus prepared meet the criteria for the electronic compounds.

(9) The liquid crystal compositions are prepared according to the formulations of the liquid crystal compositions specified in the following Examples. The preparation of the liquid crystal compositions is proceeded according to the conventional methods in the art, such as heating, ultrasonic wave, or suspension.

(10) The liquid crystal composition specified in the following Examples are prepared and studied. The formulas of the liquid crystal compositions and their test results for the performance are shown below.

Comparative Example 1

(11) The liquid crystal composition of Comparative Example 1 is prepared according to each compound and weight percentage listed in Table 2 and is tested by filling the same between two substrates of a liquid crystal display device.

(28) It can be seen from the comparison between Comparative Example 2 and Example 4 that the liquid crystal composition of the present has a smaller voltage change rate at high and low temperatures and a shorter low temperature response time, while maintaining an appropriate optical anisotropy, an appropriate clearing point, an appropriate absolute value of dielectric anisotropy.

(29) In conclusion, the liquid crystal composition of the present has a smaller voltage change rate at high and low temperatures and a shorter low temperature response time, while maintaining an appropriate optical anisotropy, an appropriate clearing point, an appropriate absolute value of dielectric anisotropy, such that the liquid crystal display device comprising the liquid crystal composition has a better display and a faster response speed.
