Abstract
A table has a bottom plate having a bottom plate channel and an outer wall. A bottom plate lip is perpendicular to the outer wall. A top plate has a top plate lip overlying and parallel to the bottom plate lip. A lower end of a frame is in the bottom plate channel and an upper end of the frame is in contact with the top plate. An edge piece clamps the top plate lip and the bottom plate lip together. The edge piece extends entirely around a perimeter of the top plate.
Claims
1. A table comprising: a bottom plate having a bottom plate channel and an outer wall; a bottom plate lip joined perpendicularly to the outer wall; a top plate having a top plate lip overlying and parallel to the bottom plate lip; a frame having an upper end in contact with the top plate; an edge piece clamps the top plate lip and the bottom plate lip together; the edge piece extends around a perimeter of the top plate.
2. The table of claim 1 wherein the frame comprises a rectangular metal tube, the bottom plate has a bottom plate channel, a lower end of the frame is in the bottom plate channel.
3. The table of claim 1 with the top plate lip joined to the top plate via a joggle having an angled section joined to the top plate lip at an acute angle.
4. The table of claim 1 with the bottom plate channel having a step with the frame on the step.
5. The table of claim 2 wherein the rectangular metal tube extends entirely around the perimeter of the top of the table.
6. The table of claim 5 wherein the top plate lip and the bottom plate lip each have a length LL and the wherein the edge piece has a first arm and a second arm each having a length equal to LL, and further including a bottom gap between a bottom surface of the channel and the frame, with the bottom gap having a width substantially equal to LL.
7. The table of claim 1 with the edge piece comprises a ductile material and has one or more ridges or projections.
9. The table of claim 6 with a top surface of the first arm co-planer with a top surface of the top plate.
10. The table of claim 2 with the edge piece extending entirely and continuously around the top plate lip and the bottom plate lip.
11. The table of claim 10 with the bottom plate comprising plastic and the frame and the edge piece comprising metal, and wherein edge piece is pressed or rolled to clamp the top plate lip and the bottom plate lip together.
12. The table of claim 4 with the bottom plate including a vertical surface extending up from the step to an interior bottom surface of the bottom plate and an inner sidewall of the rectangular metal tube are in contact with the vertical surface.
13. The table of claim 12 further including gap between the interior bottom surface and the bottom surface of the top plate.
14. The table of claim 13 wherein the bottom plate has a pattern of projections extending across the gap, and a top surface of substantially each projection is in contact with the bottom surface of the top plate.
15. The table of claim 6 wherein with the bottom plate channel has a step, the frame is on the step, the bottom surface has a perimeter spaced apart from the frame by a bottom gap formed between the step and the outer wall of the bottom plate.
16. The table of claim 2 wherein the frame has a bottom surface flush against a bottom of the channel.
17. The table of claim 4 wherein the table has two longer sides and two shorter sides and the bottom plate channel has a step only on the two longer sides.
18. A table comprising: a plastic bottom plate having a bottom plate channel and an outer wall; a bottom plate lip joined perpendicularly to the outer wall; a top plate having a top plate lip overlying and parallel to the bottom plate lip; a gap between an interior bottom surface of the bottom plate and a bottom surface of the top plate, the bottom plate having a pattern of projections extending up across the gap, and a top surface of substantially each projection in contact with the bottom surface of the top plate; a rectangular metal tube frame having an upper end in contact with the top plate, a bottom surface of the frame in the bottom plate channel; a metal edge piece having a first arm joined to a second arm via a radius, the metal edge piece clamping the top plate lip and the bottom plate lip together, and with the metal edge piece extending around a perimeter of the top plate.
19. The table of claim 18 wherein the bottom plate channel has a step and a bottom surface of the rectangular metal tube frame is on the step.
20. A method of making a table, comprising: placing a lower end of a tubular metal frame into a channel of a bottom plate; placing a top plate on top of the tubular metal frame, with a lip of the top plate parallel to and in contact with a lip of the bottom plate; positioning a metal edge piece around the lip of the top plate and the lip of the bottom plate, with the edge piece having a first arm joined to a second arm via a radius; compressing and permanently deforming the metal edge piece by moving the first arm towards the second arm, with the edge piece clamping the lip of the top plate against the lip of the bottom plate, with the edge piece extending entirely around a perimeter of the top plate.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0018]
[0019] Turning to
[0020] The frame 1526 may be a metal rectangular tube and may be generally continuous around the perimeter of the top of the table. The frame may be bent at the corners of table, with a single seam or discontinuity where the opposite ends of the frame come together. The top plate 1530 may be metal, such as aluminum, or it may be other materials such as plastic.
[0021] As shown in
[0022] In an alternative design shown in
[0023] A joggle 1550 is provided around the perimeter of the top plate 1530, with the joggle having an angled section 1552 joined to a top plate lip 1554, at an acute angle. A bottom plate lip 1548 joined perpendicularly to the outer wall 1546 is in contact with and parallel to the top plate lip 1554. As shown in
[0024]
[0025] In one embodiment the edge piece is aluminum and is assembled in a cold working process. The edge piece 1528 is shaped to fit the shape of the edge of the table. The edge piece 1528 is bent into an acute angle of 20 to 40, and typically about 30. The edge piece 1528 is positioned over or around the top plate lip 1554 and the bottom plate lip 1548. The edge piece 1528 is then pressed or rolled from the original or open position shown in
[0026] The present invention is not to be limited in scope by the specific embodiments described. Changes and modifications may be made to such embodiments without departing from the true scope of the invention. Indeed, various modifications of the invention in addition to those shown and described herein will become apparent to those skilled in the art from the foregoing description and accompanying drawings. Such modifications are intended to fall within the scope of the appended claims. As used here, substantially equal to means within =/10% of the parameter described.
