    Abstract

The present invention concerns a process for the manufacture of marked cellulose acetate fibres, an apparatus for marking cellulose acetate fibres, a process for the detection of at least one information item on marked cellulose acetate fibres or on products comprising marked cellulose acetate fibres, a process for the manufacture of a tow bale comprising marked cellulose acetate fibres, a tow bale, a tow, a filter and a cigarette comprising marked cellulose acetate fibres.

    Claims

    1. A method comprising: providing a plurality of cellulose acetate fibers; obtaining a marker comprising a nucleotide sequence, comprised in at least one polynucleotide, that corresponds to at least one information item; wherein the at least one information item is at least one of a producer, a date, a place, a batch, a fiber characteristic, a product line, or any combination thereof; depositing a marker comprising at least one polynucleotide onto at least a portion of the plurality of cellulose acetate fibers to obtain marked cellulose acetate fibers, wherein the at least one information item is detectable by identifying the nucleotide sequence of the marked cellulose acetate fibers; and manufacturing a cigarette filter comprising the marked cellulose acetate fibers.

    2. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one polynucleotide comprises from 6 to 200 nucleotides.

    3. The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one polynucleotide has a non-natural nucleotide sequence.

    4. The method of claim 1, wherein the depositing comprises applying a solution comprising the at least one polynucleotide to the plurality of cellulose acetate fibers.

    5. The method of claim 1, wherein the depositing comprises metering an amount of the at least one polynucleotide onto at least a portion of the plurality of cellulose acetate fibers or a tow comprising the plurality of cellulose acetate fibers.

    6. The method of claim 1, wherein the depositing comprises dipping the plurality of cellulose acetate fibers into a solution comprising the at least one polynucleotide.

    7. The method of claim 1, wherein the manufacturing comprises: (a) spinning cellulose acetate fibers from a dope comprising a solvent and cellulose acetate; (b) forming tow from the cellulose acetate fibers; (c) crimping the tow; and (d) drying the tow; wherein the at least one polynucleotide is deposited onto at least a portion of the cellulose acetate fibers between or during either of steps (a) to (d).

    8. The method of claim 7, wherein the at least one polynucleotide is deposited onto at least a portion of the plurality of cellulose acetate fibers between steps (c) and (d).

    9. The method of claim 7, wherein the at least one polynucleotide is deposited over an entire length of the tow.

    10. A method comprising: obtaining a cigarette filter comprising marked cellulose acetate fibers, wherein the marked cellulose acetate fibers comprise a marker, wherein the marker comprises a nucleotide sequence, comprised in at least one polynucleotide, that corresponds to at least one information item; obtaining a sample of the marked cellulose acetate fibers; assaying the sample of marked cellulose acetate fibers by a PCR technique to identify the nucleotide sequence comprised in the at least one polynucleotide; and detecting the at least one information item corresponding to the nucleotide sequence comprised in the at least one polynucleotide.

    11. The method of claim 10, wherein the at least one polynucleotide comprises from 6 to 200 nucleotides.

    12. The method of claim 10, wherein the at least one polynucleotide has a non-natural nucleotide sequence.

    13. The method of claim 10, wherein the at least one information item is a producer.

    14. The method of claim 10, wherein the at least one information item is a date.

    15. The method of claim 10, wherein the at least one information item is a batch.

    16. The method of claim 10, wherein the at least one information item is a fiber characteristic.

    17. The method of claim 10, wherein the at least one information item is a product line.

    18. The method of claim 10, wherein the at least one information item is at least one of a producer, a date, a place, a batch, a fiber characteristic, a product line, or any combination thereof.

    19. The method of claim 10, further comprising extracting the at least one polynucleotide from the cigarette filter.

    20. The method of claim 19, wherein the extracting comprises contacting with an aqueous buffer.

    Description

    Example 1

[0035] A 12-mer oligonucleotide, encoding producer, product line and date was diluted in aqueous solution to a concentration of 2 g/m.sup.3.

[0036] This oligomer solution was applied to the cellulose acetate fibres corresponding to about 0.3 ng oligonucleotide/kg cellulose acetate fibres, and the cellulose acetate fibres were dried.

[0037] A plurality of samples of the dried cellulose acetate fibres with a weight of 100 mg each were tested by routine DNA detection methods to provide forensic authentication. The oligonucleotide was detected after PCR amplification in every analysed sample, and the encoded information matched with the originating production batch. >50% of the oligonucleotide amount applied was detected.
