Abstract
A liquid hummingbird feeder is provided with a liquid container having a sealable top opening and a bottom opening, a liquid tray adapted to immerse the bottom opening in liquid, and a valve mechanism adapted to close the bottom opening to enable the liquid container to be filled through the sealable top opening.

21. A top-fill liquid hummingbird feeder for providing liquid nectar to hummingbirds, comprising: a liquid container configured to contain a volume of liquid nectar and having a top opening and a bottom portion with a liquid flow opening; a covering member adapted to seal said top opening to create a vacuum in an upper end of said liquid container when in use and to be moved to expose said top opening for adding liquid nectar to said container through said of opening; a nectar dispensing reservoir adjacent said container bottom portion and configured to receive and contain a quantity of liquid nectar flowing from said container through said liquid flow opening into said reservoir, said reservoir including at least one feeding port therein that is sized to allow hummingbirds to access liquid contained in said reservoir through said feeding port when said feeder is in use; and a valve mechanism including a first member and a second member that is displaceable with respect to said first member between a first position and a second position, said liquid flow opening being opened when said second member is displaced to said first position relative to said first member and being closed when said second member is displaced to said second position relative to said first member, closure of said flow opening placement of said second member of said valve mechanism in said second position enabling said liquid container to be filled by moving said covering member so expose said top opening and adding liquid nectar through said top opening while, at the same time, said valve mechanism in said second position prevents overflow of nectar through said feeding port.
22. The hummingbird feeder of claim 21, wherein said first member is fixed.
23. The hummingbird feeder of claim 21, wherein said second member is slideably engaged with said first member.
24. The hummingbird feeder of claim 21, wherein said second member is concentric and rotatable with respect to said first member.
25. The hummingbird feeder of claim 21, wherein said first member is attached to said reservoir and is configured to connect said reservoir to said liquid container bottom portion.
25. The hummingbird feeder of claim 25, wherein at least a portion of said first member includes inner threads adapted to screw-threadedly engage with external threads on the bottom portion of said liquid container to secure the container to the reservoir.
27. The hummingbird bird feeder of claim 26, wherein said bottom portion of said liquid container includes a vertically oriented bottleneck extension that is received within the threaded portion of the first member.
28. The hummingbird feeder of claim 21. further comprising an arm projecting outside of the reservoir and movable by a user to effect displacement of the second member between the first and second positions to manually open and close the liquid flow opening.
29. The hummingbird feeder of claim 21, wherein the covering member is a removable cap.
30. A top-fill liquid hummingbird feeder, comprising: a nectar holding and dispensing enclosure having at least one feeding port therein, said feeding port including a passageway into said enclosure that is sized to allow long-beaked hummingbirds to access nectar held in said enclosure through said feeding port when said feeder is in use; a liquid container having a top opening for receiving hummingbird nectar and a lower end with a liquid flow opening in communication with said nectar holding and dispensing enclosure; a covering member adapted to seal said top opening of said liquid container to create a vacuum in an upper end of said liquid container when the feeder is in use and to be moved to expose said top opening for adding liquid nectar to the liquid container; and a valve mechanism configured to close said liquid flow opening and prevent overflow of nectar through said feeding port when the to opening is uncovered to fill the feeder and the vacuum in the liquid container upper end is lost.

The hummingbird feeder of claim 30, wherein said valve mechanism includes a fixed member and a movable member that selectively opens or closes said liquid flow opening to respectively allow or prevent flow of liquid from said container into said nectar holding and dispensing enclosure when said movable member moves between a first position and a second position relative to the fixed member.
32. The hummingbird feeder of claim 31, wherein each of said fixed member and said movable member have at least one aperture, said apertures being brought into and out of alignment with one another through displacement of said movable member to selectively open and close said liquid flow opening through which liquid in said container flows into said nectar holding and dispensing enclosure.
33. The hummingbird feeder of claim 31, wherein said movable member is slideably engaged with said fixed member.
34. The hummingbird feeder of claim 33, wherein said movable member is concentric and rotatable with respect to said fixed member.
35. The hummingbird feeder of claim 30, further comprising an arm projecting outside of the nectar holding and dispensing enclosure and movable by a user to effect displacement of the movable member to manually open and close the liquid flow opening.
36. The hummingbird feeder of claim 30, wherein said covering member is a removable cap.
37. A method of filling a top-fill hummingbird feeder having a liquid container configured to contain a volume of liquid nectar, said liquid container including a top opening closable with a seal element to create an airtight seal and a bottom portion with a flow opening, a liquid reservoir positioned below the container and adapted to immerse the flow opening in liquid to allow a vacuum created in an upper end of said liquid container to retain liquid in said container when the top opening is closed by the seal element, said reservoir having at least one feeding port through which hummingbirds can access the liquid nectar in said reservoir, and a valve mechanism movable between first and second positions to selectively close and open said flow opening, respectively, said method comprising the steps of: placing and retaining the bird feeder in a substantially vertical orientation; moving said valve mechanism to the first position to close said flow opening; moving said seal element to expose the top opening while said valve mechanism, having been moved to the first position, prevents any remaining nectar still in said liquid container from flowing through said flow opening when said vacuum is lost in the upper end of the container; adding a desired amount of liquid nectar to said container through said top opening; sealing said top opening with said seal element; and moving said valve mechanism to the second position to open said flow opening which allows nectar to flow from said container into said reservoir until a nectar level in said reservoir immerses said flow opening at which time a vacuum is created in said liquid container upper end which prevents additional nectar from flowing into said reservoir.
38. The method as set forth in claim 37, wherein the steps of moving said valve mechanism to the first position and to the second position include rotating said valve mechanism around a substantially vertical axis.
39. The method as set forth in claim 37, wherein the steps of moving said valve mechanism to the first position and to the second position include moving an arm that projects outside of said reservoir to rotate said valve mechanism.
40. The method as set forth in claim 37, wherein said seal element is a removable cap, said step of moving said seal element including removing said cap from said container and said step of sealing said top opening including securing said cap to said container.
