A battery module, comprising: a plurality of cell module assemblies; and a pair of module plates, wherein each of the plurality of cell module assemblies comprises a plurality of battery cells and an individual housing configured to receive the plurality of battery cells, wherein the individual housing comprises: an upper plate located at an upper part of the plurality of battery cells, a lower plate located at a lower part of the plurality of battery cells, and two side plates located at opposite side surfaces of the plurality of battery cells, the two side plates being configured to connect the upper plate and the lower plate to each other, excluding a front and a rear of the plurality of battery cells, from which electrode leads protrude, and wherein each of the pair of module plates has a size that covers a corresponding one of an entire front and an entire rear of the plurality of cell module assemblies, from which the electrode leads protrude, the pair of module plates being located respectively at the front and the rear of the plurality of cell module assemblies so as to be fastened to the plurality of cell module assemblies.
2. The battery module according to claim 1, further comprising a busbar unit located between the plurality of battery cells of each of the plurality of cell module assemblies and each of the module plates, the busbar unit being electrically connected to the electrode leads.
3. The battery module according to claim 1, wherein each of the upper plate, the lower plate, and the side plates is provided with a fastening portion for coupling with the other plates.
4. The battery module according to claim 1, wherein a space is formed between each of the side plates of an individual housing and a side plate of a neighboring individual housing.
5. The battery module according to claim 4, wherein an insulating material configured to inhibit heat transfer between the plurality of cell module assemblies is further added to the space.
6. The battery module according to claim 4, wherein a flame retardant material configured to inhibit flame transfer between the plurality of cell module assemblies is further added to the space.
7. The battery module according to claim 1, wherein the upper plate and the lower plate of the individual housing are coupled to the side plates by mechanical fastening or welding.
8. The battery module according to claim 1, wherein distal end portions of the upper plate, the lower plate, and the side plates of the individual housing overlap each other when the upper plate and the lower plate are coupled to the side plates in order to improve sealability between the plates.
9. The battery module according to claim 1, wherein each of the module plates comprises a fastening portion for coupling with the individual housing and a venting portion configured to discharge venting gas.
10. The battery module according to claim 1, wherein each of the module plates is coupled to the plurality of cell module assemblies by mechanical fastening.
11. The battery module according to claim 1, wherein the individual housing is made of a metal material.

BEST MODE
[0030] In the present application, it should be understood that the terms “comprises,” “has,” “includes,” etc. specify the presence of stated features, numbers, steps, operations, elements, components, or combinations thereof, but do not preclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, numbers, steps, operations, elements, components, or combinations thereof.
[0031] In addition, the same reference numbers will be used throughout the drawings to refer to parts that perform similar functions or operations. In the case in which one part is said to be connected to another part in the specification, not only may the one part be directly connected to the other part, but also, the one part may be indirectly connected to the other part via a further part. In addition, that a certain element is included does not mean that other elements are excluded, but means that such elements may be further included unless mentioned otherwise.
[0032] Hereinafter, a battery module according to the present invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
[0033]
[0034] The battery module 100 will be described with reference to
[0035] Each of the battery cells used in the battery module 100 according to the present invention may be constituted by a secondary battery. Based on the kind and shape of a sheathing member, the secondary battery may be generally classified as a pouch-shaped secondary battery, a cylindrical secondary battery, or a prismatic secondary battery. Preferably, a pouch-shaped secondary battery may be used as the battery cell according to the present invention.
[0036] The pouch-shaped secondary battery may include an electrode assembly, a battery case configured to receive the electrode assembly, and a pair of electrode leads protruding forwards and rearwards from the battery case.
[0037] The individual housing 110 will be described in detail with reference to
[0038] Also, in the battery module 100 according to the present invention, the fastening portions 114 formed at the side plates 113 of adjacent individual housings 110 so as to correspond to each other are fastened to each other using the mechanical fastening or welding method, whereby the individual housings 110 are connected to each other. As shown in
[0039] In addition, each of the plates 111, 112, and 113 of the individual housing 110 may be made of a metal material. The plates 111, 112, and 113, each of which is made of a metal material, as described above, are coupled to each other to form the individual housing. Consequently, the individual housing has higher mechanical strength than a cartridge used in a conventional battery module, which is generally made of a plastic material.
[0040] Coupling of the individual housing through the plates 111, 112, and 113 will be described in more detail with reference to
[0041] Meanwhile, the module plate 120 will be described in detail with reference to
[0042] The busbar unit 130 will be described in detail with reference to
[0043] Although the specific details of the present invention have been described in detail, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the detailed description thereof discloses only preferred embodiments of the present invention and thus does not limit the scope of the present invention. Accordingly, those skilled in the art will appreciate that various changes and modifications are possible, without departing from the category and the technical idea of the present invention, and it will be obvious that such changes and modifications fall within the scope of the appended claims.
