DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0015] In describing a preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings, specific terminology will be resorted to for the sake of clarity. However, the invention is not intended to be limited to the specific terms so selected, and it is to be understood that each specific term includes all technical equivalents that operate in similar manner to accomplish a similar purpose. Several preferred embodiments of the invention are described for illustrative purposes, it being understood that the invention may be embodied in other forms not specifically shown in the drawings.
[0016] Turning to the drawings,
[0017] The first and second sheets 12, 14 are in parallel planes and aligned with one another. The sheets 12, 14 are coupled together along the outer periphery of the sheets 12, 14 to form a single unitary body 110. For instance, the sheets 12, 14 can be heat sealed to form a sealed outer periphery that prevents liquid and dry materials from escaping. The unitary body 110 can have any suitable size and shape, though in one exemplary embodiment the body 110 is rectangular in shape and has a bottom 112, a first side 114, a top 116 opposite the bottom 112, and a second side 118 opposite the first side.
[0018] A plurality of compartments 130 are formed in the body 110 by forming a plurality of dividing walls 132. For example, the dividing walls 132 can be formed by heat sealing the first and second sheets 12, 14 to each other. As shown, the dividing walls 132 can be at positions that are parallel to the sides 114, 118 to form rectangular compartments 130. Thus, the compartments 130 are elongated and arranged serially, with each compartment 130 directly adjacent to a neighboring compartment 130. Each compartment 130 is defined by the bottom 112, top, 116, as well as by two dividing walls 132 or one side 114, 118 and one dividing wall 132. Thus, the compartments 130 extend from the bottom 112 to the top 116. Each compartment is directly adjacent one or two other compartments 130, whereby the compartments 130 share one or two adjoining dividing walls 132 with the immediately adjacent neighboring compartment 130.
[0019] It is noted that the compartments 130 are shown as being uniform in size and shape. And, the compartments 130 extend parallel to each other, whereby each has a length defining a longitudinal axis that is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the other compartments 130 and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the body 110, and with the tear line 136 extending along the longitudinal axis to cross the width of each compartment at one end. However, it will be appreciated that the compartments 130 can have any suitable size and shape, and the compartments 130 need not all be the same size and/or shape. In addition, the compartments 130 need not be adjacent one another or adjoining, but can be separated on the body 110. And the compartments 130 need not be parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body 110, but can be configured with any arrangement such as perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the body 110. And the tear line 136 need not extend along the longitudinal axis, but can extend across any dimension or portion of the compartments.
[0020] For example, non-limiting embodiments of the invention are shown in
[0021] As shown in
[0022] In one exemplary embodiment, the first sheet 12 can be opaque and the second sheet 14 can be transparent so that the user can see the contents (i.e., product) inside of the compartments 130. However, both sheets 12, 14 can be transparent, or both sheets 12, 14 can be opaque, or both sheets 12, 14 can have a design that is partially opaque and/or partially transparent.
[0023] The body 110 also includes a mechanism for opening the compartments 130 in a single operation by the user, where the user can tear open all the compartments 130 at one time. In the embodiment of
[0024] Once the user tears open the package 100, all of the compartments 130 become accessible to the user at the same time as a result of a single operation by the user (here, tearing the package). Accordingly, the user can access the moisturizer product 152 in the first compartment 130a at the same time as the cheek makeup product 153 in the second compartment 130b. In this way, the package 100 is especially useful for retaining multiple products 152-157 that form a kit having different products that are useable together. In the example of
[0025] As shown in
[0026] In
[0027] The package 100 is particularly useful for travel. The amount of product in each compartment 130 can be enough for a single use, or for several uses (such as for 2-3 days or even a week or more). Once the package 100 is opened and the product is at least partially used, the package 100 can be discarded together with any remaining product.
[0028] To prepare the package 100, a first step is to couple the first sheet 12 to the second sheet 14, such as by heat sealing the edges of the sheets 12, 14 to one another. In a second step, the compartments 130 are formed. The second step can be performed at the same time, before or after the first step. The second step can be done by heat sealing the divider walls 132. In a third step, the product 152-157 is placed in each of the compartments 130. This can be done by placing the product between the sheets 12, 14 before conducting steps 1 and/or 2. Or, the sides 114, 118, bottom 112, and divider walls 132 can be heat sealed to partially form open-ended compartments 130 (i.e., compartments with an opened top). The product 152-157 can then be filled into the open top of the partially-formed compartments 130. The top 116 can then be closed, such as by heat sealing, to form the closed compartments 130 with the product contained therein.

[0034] Thus, a package is provided that is easy to open and can be a single use package that holds product such as health and/or beauty items. The overall package is flexible and relatively small and flat so it can easily carried and fit in a pocket, purse, drawer or the like. The plastic sheets are strong enough to prevent the product from leaking out of the compartments, but can also be tom open for use. The plastic is also flexible so that the package can be folded or bend when being carried. The package includes several separate compartments so that multiple products can be carried at one time. Multiple compartments can be opened at one time by aligning the opening mechanism to extend across those compartments. Or one or more of the compartments can have its own opening mechanism.
[0035] The description uses several geometric or relational terms, such as rectangular, parallel, and elongated. In addition, the description uses several directional or positioning terms and the like, such as top, bottom, left, right, up, down, inner, and outer. Those terms are merely for convenience to facilitate the description based on the embodiments shown in the figures. Those terms are not intended to limit the invention. Thus, it should be recognized that the invention can be described in other ways without those geometric, relational, directional or positioning terms. In addition, the geometric or relational terms may not be exact. For instance, walls may not be exactly perpendicular or parallel to one another but still be considered to be substantially perpendicular or parallel because of, for example, roughness of surfaces, tolerances allowed in manufacturing, etc. And, other suitable geometries and relationships can be provided without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
[0036] Within this specification, embodiments have been described in a way which enables a clear and concise specification to be written, but it is intended and will be appreciated that embodiments may be variously combined or separated without departing from spirit and scope of the invention. For example, it will be appreciated that all preferred features described herein are applicable to all aspects of the invention described herein. Thus, for example, a spout 172 (
[0037] Accordingly, a first embodiment of the invention is directed to a packaging having a first closed compartment, a second closed compartment, and an opening mechanism for opening the first and second closed compartments in a single operation by the user.
