Abstract
A method for monitoring a tool set is disclosed. According to one embodiment, the method comprises configuring a tool organizer in an open configuration. The tool organizer contains at least a portion of a tool set. The method further comprises visually inspecting the contents of the tool organizer to determine a first level of completeness of the tool set; recording the first level of completeness of the tool set; releasing the tool organizer and contents for use by a third party; receiving the tool organizer and returned contents from the third party; configuring the tool organizer in an open configuration; visually inspecting the returned contents of the tool organizer to determine a second level of completeness of the tool set; and comparing the first level of completeness with the second level of completeness to determine whether one or more tools from the tool set are missing.
Claims
1. A tool organizer, comprising: a plurality of wheels; and a tool storage structure comprising a plurality of vertical tool supports, wherein each one of the plurality of vertical tool supports comprises an outer fabric portion and a rigid inner structure, wherein the outer fabric portion of each vertical tool support defines a plurality of tool fasteners, each tool fastener being for holding a specific type of tool, and wherein at least a first one of the vertical tool supports swings about a vertical axis and thereby moves relative to a second one of the vertical tool supports about the vertical axis between a closed configuration and an open configuration, wherein, in the closed configuration, the first vertical tool support is parallel to the second vertical tool support and a retainer secures the first and second vertical tool supports in the closed configuration, and wherein, in the open configuration, the first vertical tool support is not parallel to the second vertical tool support and every tool in the first and second vertical tool supports is able to be visually inspected.
2. The tool organizer of claim 1, further comprising a tool indicium associated with each respective one of the tool fasteners, wherein the tool indicium associated with each respective one of the tool fasteners indicates the specific type of tool for that tool fastener.
3. The tool organizer of claim 2, wherein each one of the tool indicium is a printed name of the specific type of tool for the associated tool fastener, an alpha-numeric code or other indicium.
4. The tool organizer of claim 1, wherein each of the tool fasteners comprises a pocket, a loop, a strap, a hook and loop type fastener, or a hook.
5. The tool organizer of claim 1, further comprising one or more hinges disposed along the vertical axis, wherein each one of the vertical tool supports is attached to one or more of the hinges.
6. The tool organizer of claim 1, further comprising: a frame, wherein the plurality of wheels and the tool storage structure are attached to or supported by the frame.
7. The tool organizer of claim 6, further comprising: a plurality of storage drawers supported by the frame.
8. The tool organizer of claim 7, further comprising a rear storage compartment, wherein the plurality of storage drawers open from a front of the tool organizer and the rear storage compartment is accessible from a rear of the tool organizer.
9. The tool organizer of claim 1, wherein the retainer is selected from the group consisting of: straps that employ hook and loop fasteners, snap fasteners, buckles, and hasps.
10. The tool organizer of claim 1, further comprising: a tray that defines a flat surface, wherein the flat surface of the tray serves as a work surface when the tray is positioned horizontally.
11. The tool organizer of claim 10, wherein the tray further defines a plurality of edges that are raised relative to the flat surface of the tray.
12. The tool organizer of claim 1, further comprising a detachable tool carrier detachably coupled to the tool organizer, wherein the detachable tool carrier is arranged to hold a set of tools, wherein the detachable tool carrier comprises a plurality of tool fasteners, wherein each one of the tool fasteners of the tool carrier is for a specific type of tool, and wherein each one of the tool fasteners of the tool carrier has an associated indicium indicating the specific type of tool that tool fastener holds.
13. A tool organizer, comprising: a frame, a plurality of wheels attached to the frame; and a tool storage structure supported by the frame, wherein the tool storage structure comprises a plurality of vertical tool supports, wherein each vertical tool support comprises an outer fabric portion coupled to a rigid inner structure, wherein the outer fabric portion of each vertical tool support defines a plurality of tool fasteners, each tool fastener being for holding a specific type of tool, wherein at least a first one of the vertical tool supports swings about a vertical axis and thereby moves relative to a second one of the vertical tool supports about the vertical axis between a closed configuration and an open configuration, wherein, in the closed configuration, the first vertical tool support is parallel to the second vertical tool support and a retainer secures the first and second vertical tool supports in the closed configuration, and wherein, in the open configuration, the first vertical tool support is not parallel to the second vertical tool support and every tool in the first and second vertical tool supports is able to be visually inspected, and a tool indicium associated with each respective one of the tool fasteners, wherein the tool indicium associated with each respective one of the tool fasteners indicates the specific type of tool for that tool fastener.
14. The tool organizer of claim 13, wherein each one of the tool indicium is a printed name of the specific type of tool for the associated tool fastener, an alpha-numeric code or other indicium.
15. A tool organizer, comprising: a frame, a plurality of wheels attached to the frame; a tool storage structure supported by the frame, wherein the tool storage structure comprises a plurality of vertical tool supports, wherein each vertical tool support comprises an outer fabric portion coupled to a rigid inner structure, wherein the outer fabric portion of each vertical tool support defines a plurality of tool fasteners, each tool fastener being for holding a specific type of tool, and wherein at least a first one of the vertical tool supports swings about a vertical axis and thereby moves relative to a second one of the vertical tool supports about the vertical axis between a closed configuration and an open configuration, wherein, in the closed configuration, the first vertical tool support is parallel to the second vertical tool support and a retainer secures the first and second vertical tool supports in the closed configuration, and wherein, in the open configuration, the first vertical tool support is not parallel to the second vertical tool support and every tool the first and second vertical tool supports is able to be visually inspected, a tool indicium associated with each respective one of the tool fasteners, wherein the tool indicium associated with each respective one of the tool fasteners indicates the specific type of tool for that tool fastener, wherein each one of the tool indicium is a printed name of the specific type of tool for the associated tool fastener, an alpha-numeric code or other indicium, wherein each of the tool fasteners comprises a pocket, a loop, a strap, a hook and loop type fastener, or a hook, a plurality of storage drawers supported by the frame; a retainer for securing the vertical tool supports in the closed configuration.
16. The tool organizer of claim 1, wherein the at least one vertical tool support swings about the vertical axis between the closed configuration and the open configuration while maintaining a physical connection to the other one of the vertical tool supports.
17. A tool organizer, comprising: a frame comprising: an upper frame component; and a lower frame component; a plurality of wheels coupled to the lower frame component, wherein the plurality of wheels comprises two rear wheels and two front wheels, a tool storage structure coupled to the upper frame component at a first side of the tool organizer, wherein the tool storage structure comprises a plurality of vertical tool supports, wherein each vertical tool support comprises an outer fabric portion and a rigid inner structure, wherein at least a first one of the vertical tool supports that comprises an outer fabric portion and a rigid inner structure is movable relative to a second one of the vertical tool supports that comprises an outer fabric portion and a rigid inner structure between a closed configuration where the first vertical tool support is parallel to the second vertical tool support, and an open configuration where the first vertical tool support is not parallel to the second vertical tool support, and wherein the outer portion of each vertical tool support defines a plurality of tool fasteners, each tool fastener being for holding a specific type of tool, wherein the at least one vertical tool support swings about the vertical axis between the closed configuration and the open configuration; a plurality of storage drawers; the lower frame including a storage compartment that is accessible from a second side of the tool organizer, wherein the second side of the tool organizer is different than the first side of the tool organizer; a tray integrated into the upper frame component, wherein the tray defines a flat surface and is adjustable between positions, at least one of which includes the flat surface being in a horizontal configuration, wherein the tool storage structure is not physically supported by the tray; and a retainer securing the first and second vertical tool supports in the closed configuration, wherein the first and second vertical tool supports are supported such that every tool in the first and second vertical supports may be visually inspected in the open configuration.
18. The tool organizer of claim 1, wherein the vertical axis is located along a physical connection between the at least one vertical tool support that swings about the vertical axis, and a supporting structure for the at least one vertical tool support.
19. The tool organizer of claim 1, wherein, in the closed configuration, the tools in the first and second vertical tool support are hidden from view.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

(107) Tool organizer 100 includes a set of storage panels or vertical tool supports 130 for storing a specific set of tools. The specific set of tools may be selected based on the typical activities of the user. For example, the tool organizer 100 may be populated with a first set of tools for a plumber, a second set of tools for an electrician, or a third set of tools for a general maintenance worker. In the illustrated embodiment, each vertical support includes a rigid inner structure and an outer fabric covering which forms one or more tool fasteners 140 to hold a tool 144. Each tool fastener 140 has a specific size and shape so as to properly contain a specific tool 144 and includes a tool indicia 142 indicating the specific tool 144 which is associated with the tool fastener 140. Each tool fastener 140 of the example tool organizer 100 is a pocket into which a specific tool 144 may be placed and stored. Of course, other types of tool fasteners 140 may be contemplated, such as loops, straps, Velcro, and hooks, for example.

(110) According to one aspect of the present invention, a method is presented for using the example tool organizer 100 to facilitate an inspection and/or inventory process to efficiently determine a first level of completeness, i.e. to identify any missing tools from the set of tools. The method begins with disposing the tool organizer 100 in an open configuration and visually inspecting each tool fastener 140 to determine whether a tool 144 is disposed therein. The visual inspection further includes determining whether the each tool 144 disposed within a tool fastener 140 is associated with the tool indicia 142. Preferably, the tool indicia 142 is a printed tool name, although it may be an alpha-numeric code or other indicia such as bar-code.
(111) The method also includes recording the first level of completeness of the tool set, such as by noting the missing tools or tool indicia. The further includes releasing the tool organizer and contents to a third party and, at some future time, receiving the tool organizer 100 and returned contents from the third party. Again, the user configures the tool organizer 100 in an open configuration and visually inspects the returned contents of the tool organizer 100 to determine a second level of completeness of the tool set. The first and second levels of completeness are compared to determine whether one or more tools 144 from the tool set were not returned with the tool organizer 100.

At block 1620, the tool organizer may be checked out or released to the third party for use.

To remove the pin, spring 2118 may be retracted by lifting release rod 2120 using release handle 2122. Once pin 2116 is removed, the upper frame component 1816 is free to rotate about hinge 2130. Forward rotation of the upper frame component causes the lock plate 2110 to slide downward relative to the guide bolt 2114 attached to the lower frame component 1818. Once the upper frame component has been sufficiently folded forward, a notched option of the lock plate cooperates with the guide bolt 2114 to secure the upper frame component 1816 in the folded or closed configuration.
