Abstract
A cutting guide having a seam allowance recess and methods of cutting a piece of material with such cutting guide.
Claims
1. A cutting guide, comprising: a) a body having a top surface disposed in substantially parallel opposed relation to a bottom surface having a thickness sufficient to guide a cutting tool along one of a plurality of sides of said body; and b) a recess having a pair of opposed sides and a cross member disposed in said bottom surface of said body, said recess defining a passage which communicates with at least one of said plurality of sides of said body, said recess having dimensions sufficient to receive a seam allowance of a pair of materials joined at a seam with said bottom surface engaged with said pair of materials on either side of said seam allowance.
2. The cutting guide as described in claim 1, wherein said recess defines a passage which communicates between at least two of said plurality of sides of said body.
3. The cutting guide described in claim 2, wherein said body has a substantially rectangular configuration with two pairs of opposed sides and wherein said recess defines a passage which communicates between one of said two pairs of opposed sides of said body.
4. The cutting guide as described in claim 2, wherein said body has a substantially rectangular configuration with two pairs of opposed sides and a corresponding two pairs of diagonally opposed corners, and wherein said recess defines a passage which communicates between one of said two pairs of diagonally opposed corners of said body.
5. The cutting guide as described in claim 4, wherein one of said opposed sides of said recess which communicates between one of said two pairs of diagonally opposed corners of said body intersects both of said diagonally opposed corners.
6. The cutting guide as described in claim 5, wherein said opposed sides of said recess comprise substantially linear parallel opposed sides.
7. The cutting guide as described in claim 5, wherein said opposed sides of said recess have an amount of curvature.
8. The cutting guide described in claim 2, further comprises a second recess having a pair of opposed sides and a cross member disposed in said bottom surface of said body, said second recess having dimensions sufficient to receive a seam allowance of a pair of materials joined at a seam with said bottom surface engaged with said pair of materials on either side of said seam allowance.
9. The cutting guide described in claim 8, wherein said second recess defines a second passage which communicates with said first recess and at least one of said plurality of sides of said body.
10. The cutting guide described in claim 9, wherein said second recess defines a second passage which communicates with said first recess and at least two of said plurality of sides of said body.
11. The cutting guide described in claim 10, wherein said body has a substantially rectangular configuration with two pairs of opposed sides and a corresponding two pairs of diagonally opposed corners, and wherein said second recess defines a passage which communicates between one of said two pairs of opposed sides.
12. The cutting guide described in claim 10, wherein said body has a substantially rectangular configuration with two pairs of opposed sides and a corresponding two pairs of diagonally opposed corners, and wherein said second recess defines a passage which communicates between one of said two pairs of diagonally opposed corners.
13. The cutting guide described in claim 12, wherein one of said opposed sides of said second recess which communicates between one of said two pairs of diagonally opposed corners of said body intersects both of said diagonally opposed corners.
14. The cutting guide described in claim 13, wherein said opposed sides of said second recess comprise substantially linear parallel opposed sides.
15. The cutting guide described in claim 13, wherein said opposed sides of said second recess have an amount of curvature.
16. The cutting guide described in claim 2, further comprising a second recess having a pair of opposed sides and a cross member disposed in said top surface of said body member, said second recess defining a passage which communicates with at least one of said plurality of sides of said body, said recess having dimensions sufficient to receive a seam allowance of a pair of materials joined at a seam with said top surface engaged with said pair of materials on either side of said seam allowance.
17. A method for making a cutting guide, comprising the steps of: a) providing a body having a top surface disposed in substantially parallel opposed relation to a bottom surface having a thickness sufficient to guide a cutting tool along one of a plurality of sides of said body; and b) generating a recess in said body, said recess having a pair of opposed sides and a cross member disposed in said bottom surface of said body, said recess defining a passage which communicates with at least one of said plurality of sides of said body, said recess having dimensions sufficient to receive a seam allowance of a pair of materials joined at a seam with said bottom surface engaged with said pair of materials on either side of said seam allowance.
18. The method of claim 17, wherein said recess defines a passage which communicates between at least two of said plurality of sides of said body.
19. The method of claim 18, wherein said body has a substantially rectangular configuration with two pairs of opposed sides and wherein said recess defines a passage which communicates between one of said two pairs of opposed sides of said body.
20. The method of claim 18, wherein said body has a substantially rectangular configuration with two pairs of opposed sides and a corresponding two pairs of diagonally opposed corners, and wherein said recess defines a passage which communicates between one of said two pairs of diagonally opposed corners of said body.
21. The method of claim 20, wherein one of said opposed sides of said recess which communicates between one of said two pairs of diagonally opposed corners of said body intersects both of said diagonally opposed corners.
22. The method of claim 21, wherein said opposed sides of said recess comprise substantially linear parallel opposed sides.
23. The method of claim 21, wherein said opposed sides of said recess have an amount of curvature.
24. The method of claim 18, further comprising the step of generating a second recess having a pair of opposed sides and a cross member disposed in said bottom surface of said body, said second recess having dimensions sufficient to receive a seam allowance of a pair of materials joined at a seam with said bottom surface engaged with said pair of materials on either side of said seam allowance.
25. The method of claim 24, wherein said second recess defines a second passage which communicates with said first recess and at least one of said plurality of sides of said body.
26. The method of claim 25, wherein said second recess defines a second passage which communicates with said first recess and at least two of said plurality of sides of said body.
27. The method of claim 26, wherein said body has a substantially rectangular configuration with two pairs of opposed sides and a corresponding two pairs of diagonally opposed corners, and wherein said second recess defines a passage which communicates between one of said two pairs of opposed sides

The method of claim 26, wherein said body has a substantially rectangular configuration with two pairs of opposed sides and a corresponding two pairs of diagonally opposed corners, and wherein said second recess defines a passage which communicates between one of said two pairs of diagonally opposed corners.
29. The method of claim 28, wherein one of said opposed sides of said second recess which communicates between one of said two pairs of diagonally opposed corners of said body intersects both of said diagonally opposed corners.
30. The method of claim 29, wherein said opposed sides of said second recess comprise substantially linear parallel opposed sides.
31. The method of claim 29, wherein said opposed sides of said second recess have an amount of curvature.

The method of claim 18, further comprising the step of generating a second recess having a pair of opposed sides and a cross member disposed in said top surface of said body member, said second recess defining a passage which communicates with at least one of said plurality of sides of said body, said recess having dimensions sufficient to receive a seam allowance of a pair of materials joined at a seam with said top surface engaged with said pair of materials on either side of said seam allowance.
33. A method of cutting a piece of material, comprising the steps of: a) providing a piece of material having a seam allowance at which a pair of materials join at a seam; b) providing a cutting guide, including: i) a body with a top surface disposed in substantially parallel opposed relation to a bottom surface having a thickness sufficient to guide a cutting tool along one of a plurality of sides of said body; and ii) a recess having a pair of opposed sides and a cross member disposed in said bottom surface of said body, said recess defining a passage which communicates with at least one of said plurality of sides of said body, said recess having dimensions sufficient to receive said seam allowance of said pair of materials joined at said seam; c) engaging said bottom surface of said cutting guide with said piece of material to receive said seam allowance in said recess; d) guiding a cutting tool along one of said plurality of sides of said cutting guide; and e) cutting said piece of material with said cutting tool guided along one said plurality of sides of said cutting guide.
34. The method of claim 33, further comprising the steps of: a) locating both flaps of the seam allowance on one side of the seam which join said pair of materials; b) abutting one of said pair of opposed sides of said recess against said seam.
