Abstract
A holding and dispensing device may conveniently store fasteners and permits a user to easily and quickly retrieve and dispense fasteners, such as staples, one at a time, without the risk of fasteners falling out of the device, or protruding in a manner that may harm the user. Embodiments may be especially suitable for a core of staples. The present disclosure further relates to methods of holding fasteners in a fastener holder and methods of dispensing fasteners.
Claims
1. A fastener holder and dispenser for a fastener core having a plurality of fasteners, each fastener having a fastener height and a fastener length, the fastener holder and dispenser comprising: a housing having a front wall, a back wall, opposing side walls, an open top wall, and a partially open bottom wall; a fastener rail extending along a length of an interior of the housing between the top wall and the bottom wall, the fastener rail defining a fastener-shaped channel in the interior of the housing; and at least one magnet affixed to the partially open bottom wall; wherein the bottom wall, front wall, and opposing sidewalls define a dispensing slot extending from a bottom edge of the front wall to a plane defined by the bottom wall, and from a front edge of the bottom wall to a plane defined by the front wall.
2. The fastener holder and dispenser of claim 1, wherein the dispensing slot has a tapered depth from the front wall toward the back wall, such that the depth increases from the bottom edge of the front wall to the plane defined by the bottom wall.
3. The fastener holder and dispenser of claim 1, wherein the dispensing slot extends a first distance from the bottom edge of the front wall to the plane defined by the bottom wall, the first distance being at least the fastener height.
4. The fastener holder and dispenser of claim 3, wherein the first distance is less than twice the fastener height.
5. The fastener holder and dispenser of claim 1, wherein the dispensing slot extends a second distance from the front edge of the bottom wall to the plane defined by the front wall, the second distance being less than the fastener length.
6. The fastener holder and dispenser of claim 1, wherein the dispensing slot is configured to allow removal of one fastener core at a time.
7. The fastener holder and dispenser of claim 1, wherein the fastener rail is tapered such that it is narrower nearest the top wall and wider nearest the bottom wall.
8. The fastener holder and dispenser of claim 1, wherein the front wall comprises a window therein for viewing supply of the fasteners.
9. The fastener holder and dispenser of claim 1, wherein the open top wall is shaped to receive a fastener core into the interior of the housing.
10. The fastener holder and dispenser of claim 1, further comprising two magnets affixed to opposing ends of the bottom wall.
11. The fastener holder and dispenser of claim 1, wherein the at least one magnet is configured to engage a lead fastener of the fastener core upon contact.
12. The fastener holder and dispenser of claim 1, wherein the dispensing slot is configured to reveal an outward-facing fastener crown.
13. A fastener holder and dispenser for use with a fastener core having a plurality of fasteners, each fastener having a fastener height and a fastener length, the fastener holder and dispenser comprising: a housing having a front wall, a back wall, opposing side walls, an open top wall, and a partially open bottom wall having a magnetic element configured to engage a fastener; a tapered fastener rail extending along a length of an interior of the housing between the top wall and the bottom wall, the fastener rail defining a fastener-shaped channel in the interior of the housing from an opening in the open top wall to the partially open bottom wall; wherein the partially open bottom wall, front wall, and opposing sidewalls define a dispensing slot extending a first distance of at least the fastener height from a bottom edge of the front wall to a plane defined by the bottom wall, and extending a second distance of less than the fastener length from a front edge of the bottom wall to a plane defined by the front wall.
14. The fastener holder and dispenser of claim 13, wherein the first distance is less than twice the fastener height.
15. A fastener holder and dispenser system comprising: a fastener core having a plurality of fasteners, each fastener having a fastener height and a fastener length; fastener holder and dispenser having: a housing having a front wall, a back wall, opposing side walls, an open top wall, and a partially open bottom wall having a magnetic element configured to engage a fastener; a fastener rail extending along a length of an interior of the housing between the top wall and the bottom wall, the fastener rail defining a fastener-shaped channel in the interior of the housing configured to receive the fastener core; wherein the bottom wall, front wall, and opposing sidewalls define a dispensing slot extending a first distance at least the fastener height from a bottom edge of the front wall to a plane defined by the bottom wall, and extending a second distance less than the fastener length from a front edge of the bottom wall to a plane defined by the front wall.
16. The system of claim 15, wherein the fastener core is inserted into the fastener-shaped channel.
17. The system of claim 16, wherein an outward-facing fastener crown is visible in the dispensing slot.
18. The system of claim 15, wherein the magnetic element is encapsulated into the bottom wall.
19. The system of claim 15, wherein the magnetic element comprises two magnets affixed to opposing ends of the bottom wall.
20. The system of claim 15, wherein the front wall comprises a window therein for viewing the interior.

[0044] The present disclosure also provides a method of dispensing fasteners from a fastener holder and dispenser. In one embodiment, the dispensing slot 106 is configured to permit one fastener to be pulled out at a time. In another embodiment, after a fastener is retrieved, the fastener core 201 drops onto the at least one magnet 107 and the process is repeated. The fastener core 201 drops onto the at least one magnet 107 because of gravity. This feature is different from conventional staple or nail guns or other fastener installation tools, which generally require a spring loading pusher mechanism to feed fasteners from a magazine into the path where they can be installed, typically with a drive blade which is raised and then fired through an electric or pneumatic powered, or levered and spring-tensioned handle, mechanism. The device of the present disclosure uses gravity and at least one magnet 107 to hold the fastener core 201 in place and therefore requires no such mechanisms to load the fastener in the dispensing slot 106 or lock it into for the dispensing slot 106 for dispensing. It is also notable that the present invention depicts a dispensing means, and not the installation means more typical in the industry.
