Abstract
A height adjustment system for a delivery table or the like having a table top supported upon a height adjustable column with an assist cylinder. The system includes an actuator assembly to operate the assist cylinder from manual actuators, such as paddles, located approximately in four corners of table top. The system may include a pair of paddle assemblies mounted under the table top on opposite sides of said assist cylinder. The paddle assemblies may be coupled to the assist cylinder by a linear linkage that translates pivotal movement of a paddle into linear movement sufficient to actuate the assist cylinder. The linear linkage may include a straight drive rod coupled to one paddle assembly and an offset drive rod coupled to the other paddle assembly. The linear linkage may also include a pivot arm to reverse movement of the offset drive rod.
Claims
1. A height-adjustable table comprising: a table top having four corners, a base, a column extending upwardly from said base to support said table top, said column configured to be adjustable in length to allow selective control over the height of said table top, said column including an assist cylinder having a locked state in which said length of said column is secured and an unlocked state in which said length of said column is readily adjustable, said assist cylinder having an actuator movable to vary said assist cylinder between said locked state and said unlocked state; and an actuator assembly affixed to an undersurface of said table top and operatively coupled to said assist cylinder actuator to allow a user to manually place said assist cylinder in said unlocked state, said actuator assembly including a first paddle assembly and a second paddle assembly, said first paddle assembly having a first pair of manual actuators disposed on a first side of said table top proximate a first and a second of said corners of said table top, said second paddle assembly have a second pair of manual actuators disposed on a second side of said table top opposite said first side, said second pair of manual actuators proximate a third and a fourth of said corners of said table top, a first linkage disposed between said first paddle assembly and said assist cylinder, said first linkage translating movement of at least one of said manual actuators in said first pair of manual actuators into movement of said actuator of said assist cylinder into said unlocked state, a second linkage disposed between said second paddle assembly and said assist cylinder, said second linkage translating movement of at least one of said manual actuators in said second pair of manual actuators into movement of said actuator of said assist cylinder into said unlocked state, whereby manual movement of any one of said manual actuators results in movement of said assist cylinder from said locked state to said unlocked state.
2. The height-adjustable table of claim 1 wherein said first linkage and said second linkage include at least one shared component, said shared component forming an operational portion of said first linkage and said second linkage.
3. The height-adjustable table of claim 2 wherein said first linkage includes a first drive rod operatively engaged with said shared component and said second linkage includes a second drive rod operatively engaged with said shared component.
4. The height-adjustable table of claim 3 wherein said shared component is disposed between said first drive rod and said actuator of said assist cylinder and between said second drive rod and said actuator of said assist cylinder.
5. The height-adjustable table of claim 4 wherein at least one of said first drive rod and said second drive rod is length-adjustable.

The height-adjustable table of claim 5 wherein said first paddle assembly includes a first spanning rod extending between said manual actuators of said first paddle assembly, said second paddle assembly includes a second spanning rod extending between said manual actuators of said second paddle assembly, said first paddle assembly affixed to said undersurface of said table top by at least one bracket fitted over said first spanning rod, said second paddle assembly affixed to said undersurface of said table top by at least one bracket fitted over said second spanning rod.

The height-adjustable table of claim 5 wherein each paddle assembly includes a spanning rod and is affixed to said undersurface of said table top by at least two brackets fitted over said spanning rod, each of said spanning rods including a first bend configured to interact with one of said brackets to control movement of said spanning rod in a first axial direction and a second bend configured to interact with another of said brackets to control movement of said spanning rod in a second axial direction.

The height-adjustable table of claim 7 wherein said first spanning rod includes a first leg operatively engaged with said first drive rod, wherein rotational movement of said first spanning rod causes movement of said first leg and movement of said first drive rod; and wherein said second spanning rod includes a second leg operatively engaged with said second drive rod, wherein rotational movement of said second spanning rod causes movement of said second leg and movement of said second drive rod.
9. The height-adjustable table of claim 1 wherein said actuator assembly is affixed to said undersurface of said table top by a support plate; and wherein each manual actuator is a paddle.
10. A table comprising: a table top having an undersurface and four corners; a base; a column extending between said table top and said base, said column being height adjustable to allow selective variation in a height of said table top relative to said base, said column including an assist cylinder selectively operable between a locked mode in which said assist cylinder holds said table top at said current height to an unlocked mode in which a user may adjust said current height of said table top, said assist cylinder having an actuator movable in a first direction to actuate said assist cylinder into said unlocked mode and movable is a second direction to actuate said assist cylinder into said locked mode; and a height-adjustment system affixed to said undersurface of said table top and coupled to said assist cylinder to allow a user to manually place said assist cylinder in said unlocked mode to allow adjustment in said height of said column, said height adjustment system including four manual actuators disposed proximate said four corners of said table top, a first paddle assembly including a first and second of said manual actuators and a second paddle assembly including a third and fourth of said manual actuators, said paddle assemblies pivotally mounted to said undersurface of said table top and disposed on opposite sides of said assist cylinder, said height adjustment system including a first drive rod coupled between said first paddle assembly and said actuator of said assist cylinder and a second drive rod coupled between said second paddle assembly and said actuator of said assist cylinder, said height adjustment system further including a shared component configured to communicate motion of said first drive rod and said second drive rod to said assist cylinder actuator, whereby operation of any of said manual actuators results in movement of said actuator in said first direction.
11. The table of claim 10 wherein at least one of said first drive rod and said second drive rod is length-adjustable.
12. The table of claim 11 wherein a first length adjustment screw is fitted into an end of said first drive rod and a second length adjustment screw is fitted into an end of said second drive rod.
13. The table of claim 10 wherein each paddle assembly includes a spanning rod and is affixed by at least one bracket fitted over said spanning rod, said spanning rod including at least one bend configured to interact with said bracket to control movement of said spanning rod in an axial direction.
14. The table of claim 10 wherein each paddle assembly includes a spanning rod and is affixed by at least two brackets fitted over said spanning rod, each spanning rod including a first bend configured to interact with one of said brackets to control movement of said spanning rod in a first axial direction and a second bend configured to interact with another of said brackets to control movement of said spanning rod in a second axial direction.
15. The table of claim 14 wherein each spanning rod includes a radial leg operatively engaged with at least one of said first drive rod and said second drive rod.
16. A height-adjustment assembly for a table having a table top comprising: a height-adjustable column; an assist cylinder associated with said column, said assist cylinder selectively operable into a locked mode in which said assist cylinder holds said column at said current height and an unlocked mode in which a user may adjust said height of said column, said assist cylinder having an actuator and being movable into said locked mode by movement of said actuator in a first direction and movable into said unlocked mode by movement of said actuator in a second direction; a first paddle assembly disposed outwardly of said column on a first side, said first paddle assembly including a first manual actuator disposed proximate a first corner of the table top and a second manual actuator disposed proximate a second corner of the table top; a first drive rod operatively coupled between said first paddle assembly and said assist cylinder actuator; a second paddle assembly disposed outwardly of said column on a second side opposite said first side, said second paddle assembly including a third manual actuator disposed proximate a third corner of the table top and a fourth manual actuator disposed proximate a fourth corner of the table top; a second drive rod operatively coupled between said second paddle assembly and said assist cylinder actuator; and a shared component communicating motion of said first drive rod and said second drive rod to said assist cylinder actuator, said shared component having a first portion operatively engaged with said first drive rod and a second portion operatively engaged with said second drive rod, whereby movement of said first drive rod or said second drive rod results in movement of said assist cylinder actuator in said second direction.
17. The assembly of claim 16 wherein said first drive rod extends inwardly from said first paddle assembly and said second drive rod extends inwardly from said second paddle assembly.
18. The assembly of claim 17 wherein said assist cylinder actuator is biased in said first direction.
19. The assembly of claim 18 wherein at least one of said first drive rod and said second drive rod is length adjustable.
20. The assembly of claim 18 further including a support plate configured to be mounted to a table top; and wherein said first paddle assembly, second paddle assembly, first drive rod, second drive rod and shared component are movably affixed to an undersurface of the table top by said support plate.

[0029] As noted above, the height adjustment system 12 of the illustrated embodiment also includes an actuator assembly 36 that mounts to the undersurface of the table top 14 and is operatively coupled to the assist cylinder 18. In use, the actuator assembly 36 provides a mechanism to allow manipulation of the assist cylinder 18 from a plurality of convenient locations about the table top 14. In the illustrated assembly, the actuator assembly 36 is mounted to the undersurface of the table top 14. The actuator assembly 36 of this embodiment includes a pair of paddle assemblies 22 and a linear linkage 24 that operatively couples the paddle assemblies 22 to the assist cylinder 18. The paddle assemblies 22 are mounted on opposite sides of the column 16 and the assist cylinder 18. In the illustrated embodiment, each paddle assembly 22 includes a spanning rod 38 with paddles 40 mounted at or near opposite ends. As a result, the linear linkage 24 is configured to reverse the direction of linear motion of one of the drive rods before engagement with the link 82 and the assist cylinder actuator 20. In this embodiment, that function is provided by the pivot arm 30. As noted above, the pivot arm 30 is operatively arranged between the straight drive rod 26, the offset drive rod 28 and the link 82.
